In this video I am going to do something different. I am going to talk about a Pema Chodron quote that I see all over instagram, Pinterest and Facebook. I hear it in all kinds of yoga classes. It has become a meme or a cliche and it has lost its original meaning and context in my opinion.
The quote is, “nothing ever goes away until it has taught us what we need to know.”
The quote makes me agitated every time I hear it and so in this video I am going to unpack the quote and replace its context.
This video is like a small dharma talk, a short teaching that I offer as a student of the lineage of Tibetan Buddhism of which I am a part. Let me know if it is something that you enjoy and if so I can offer more of these in the future.
    Namaste, Melissa

I found this video while researching that very quote, because Facebook fact-checkers claim that it's a false quote and sanctioned me for posting it. Literally, it's an accurate quote.
I listened to what was said in this video and I still lean towards agreeing with Pema Chodron's words. I have had multiple things in my life, good and bad, which have taught me to be better to others and better to myself. And, yes, those things seemed to keep creeping up multiple times until I got the point that it was my own expectations or my own struggle with acceptance that was creating my own misery. Acceptance is a means by which struggle goes away.

To me it's very simple......learn from your mistakes, look at the repeating patterns in your life and learn from them. We cause a LOT of our own problems/suffering.

as someone who has lived through a good deal of challenges recently, i can attest to the possibility that they were all part of the same lesson i’m happy to say i’m finally learning 😌🙏

Thank you for this Melissa! I love how you addressed this because when I heard that quote somewhere in the social media universe, it also did not sit well with me and like you, I thought of illness, terminal or even mental illness. I appreciate this video and your inquisitive and investigative approach. I'm working on being more kind and compassionate to myself :-)

I am being kind and compassionate with myself! And I thoroughly enjoy your dharma talks. This one resonates with me, as I too have felt a little tension when I hear this oft repeated quote. Thank you for digging deeply to put the quote back into its context.
