It's not just a visual masterpiece, this is , for me, the film where Cameron got consistently the best performances from his cast. Probably *because* the conditions of the shoot were so claustrophobic and realistic.

@doNaldMusk-h28-hfkslP18 "excessive runtime" That is funny. I think it is a rather normal length, telling the story takes the time it takes. Personally, I never thought highly of cutting movies down just because the audience doesn't have the attention span necessary.

Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio should have each won an Oscar for their roles in this film. They were subjected to things that no actor should EVER be asked to do, yet they managed to deliver performances that still evoke the same kind of emotion to this very day.

Wednesday. August 9, 1989. I was just a teen when this movie came out. It was an amazing experience. Coincidentally, there were already two underwater sci-fi movies that came before it, Leviathan and Deep Star Six. Both films were flops. The Abyss was also a financial flop but it was a critical success amongst movie critics. It would later go on to receive four Academy award nominations but only won the Oscar for best visual effects. It also won the Saturn award for best music. It had a beautiful theme song.

This film released in India in September 1990 (about a year after its American release) when I was just six! I have blurry memories of watching it with my parents (at a theater that doesn't exist today). I recall close to nothing obviously (except perhaps a flicker of the resuscitation scene and some bizarre structure standing out of the sea) but I do remember very distinctly walking out of the theater full of intense, inexplicable wonder. As they say, you may forget actual details of an event but you will never forget "how it made you feel". I carry that wonder in me even today (I'm 39) and what's even better is that I haven't watched the movie since! I wish this one-day release occurs in India too - but I doubt it. I hope to catch it on an OTT platform. This trailer looks stellar and weakens me with nostalgia and awe. ❤

To this day, I use the scene with the drowning rat to not only motivate myself, but other people who are going through a difficult situation: "At first you feel like you're drowning, but eventually your lungs relearn how to breathe liquid, like when you were in the womb." @@markrowe8824 In the case of The Abyss, the best parts were the stuff omitted that they added back later. Can't wait to see it in 4K.

    I'll buy the 4K bluray.
    Amazing movie.

Back when Cameron made amazing movies.
This has been needing a remaster for ages - can’t wait to see it in the theater again!

@@malspence6892 LOL no, he doesn't. The ONLY cultural Impact Avatar had was the visual design, the technical way it was shot and shown in cinemas and of course bringing back the Pocahontas Story to a new generation. Cameron didn't need to hide behind all that to make awesome movies. His films used to have memorable characters and quotes. All these things that Avatar doesn't have.

@@KRAFTWERK2K6 I don't watch James Cameron movies for culture mate, Terminator was a schlocky B movie, but I loved it, Aliens was a fast paced War movie with bugs, True Lies was a comedy and The Abyss was an overly preachy, dragged out mess of a film that I loved.
Avatar 1 & 2 were one and done, great spectacles that were perfect for the big screen, the thing that Cameron excels at. Don't try and dress him up as Fellini mate, he's a box office action director and it's as simple as that.

@@malspence6892 I really don't. I simply pointed out that he used to make movies with interesting characters and bringing a big group of amazing actors together that left an impression that lasted while the Avatars movies are just really mindless forgettable cheese that feel like watching Videogame Cutscenes.

One of JC's most underrated gems! 👌The CGI visuals in this are absolutely stunning ... especially the part when that underwater alien takes him down into their mothership! OMG, that whole scene is like a freakin' rollercoaster ride! 🤩🤩🤩 Would LOVE to see this re-released in IMAX ... that would be one HELL of an experience! 😎👏

@@cinematicgames And did you forget about that "water worm" scene where it copied her face like a mirror reflection? That was one of the earlier forms of CGI effects used long before Jurassic Park even came out in theaters, and it also inspired Cameron to use that same method to create the T-1000 from Terminator 2 (IIRC ... Dennis Murin, the famous VFX designer, worked on the set of this movie, as well as JP just a few years later)

@@cinematicgames You are correct, sir, I worked on the movie's visual effects and I believe the only cgi is the water weenie done by ILM which sadly gets most of the acclaim but the miniature work was phenomenal. All the rest of the subs and aliens and alien ships were miniatures and puppets. The model subs were hung by wires off a giant overhead gantry system and moved via computer "motion control" using stepper motors. There was a miniature rear projection system inside the subs that created the images of the crew inside. They were shot "dry for wet" which meant we smoked up the stage to simulate the particulate matter in water.

Nothing like The Abyss. Not even Avatar. Nor Terminator. I believe James Cameron, having conceived at 16 years of age, his film continues to be a canonical achievement in film making history. It is well, above and beyond any works since. It cannot be duplicated nor held up against any other similar underwater film because they simply do not exist, particularly this version, The Special Edition. For those fortunate enough to have seen the original version that Summer of 1989...seeing this Special Edition 4k version...in a theater... I can most honestly assure you that the final 20 minutes of this film will be one of the most memorable moments you will ever experience in a theater.

Been waiting for so long for this to be 4K’d . Now a new generation can see a true sci-fi classic and why Ed Harris didn’t get an Oscar for this, I’ll never know. And Mary Elizabeth STILL won’t talk about that scene to this day!
