Welcome back to Recap Fuel. One of the biggest celebrity feuds, which just happens to be in the Star Trek sphere, might finally be coming to an end. William Shatner and George Takei have traded barbs for decades and, now, it would appear that Takei has signaled that enough is enough. The Sulu actor seemingly squashed the feud during a recent interview by vowing to never speak of his former co-star again.
William Shatner did not get along with most of his former Star Trek castmates, though a few like Deforest Kelly, considered him a friend. William Shatner made enemies out of some of his former Star Trek castmates. Some eventually became his friend, others held onto the grudge they bore against him until the day they died. Others continue to hold on to their hatred.

After nimoys funeral his daughter wrote to Shatner who had been writing letters and trying to get Nimoys attention for a while by then saying that Nimoy loved him and that for whatever reason her father became reclusive. Which often happens when you’re slowly dying of a terminal illness
Thank you for this. I would just cry to think that at the last years it was animus and resentment that kept apart such good friends.
I can understand Mr. Nimoy's perspective in all this. I am the oldest yet the smallest in a family of veritable giants. I had been a tiny, thin, visibly misshapen boy. This from an iatrogenic blunder complicating my breech birth delivery; and shortly thereafter, my stepfather smoking though my childhood and adolescence.
Mr. Nimoy indirectly, through Cmdr Spock, literally saved my life. In my mid-teens, I was experiencing what we now recognise as central sleep apnea, which I decades on had defined as "a disruption of the neural current between the CNS (central nervous system) and the diaphragm, of undetermined etiology"; to which my pulmonologist Dr. William Chinn replied, "Yes, that's still true.*
In the episode "A Private Little War", during a landing party mission, Spock sustains a nearly fatal gunshot wound. Back aboard the Enterprise, he lies in bed, during which time, he heals himself with his Vulcan mental disciplines.
I periodically would stop breathing during my sleep; I would wake unable to move a single muscle, the smallest part; I could not inhale a single breath!
Not once or twice, but a dozen or more occasions. They were and are the most frightening experiences of my life!
I adapted this Vulcan healing method. It took all my will to resume breathing. I have Mr. Nimoy to thank for my very life!

Met Takei in 1983 at a Star Trek convention.. literally met and talked with him at length because I went on a 2 mile jog with him. Of course the jog was open to everyone, but most of those that started didn't make it the first half mile, much less the full run. I was about to go into basic training, I was 18 and so managed it all the way to the end. What a treat. He was funny... engaging... and what a great, energetic and positive person he was back then.
I've been a fan ever since, but the bitterness very sad.
Yes, Takei is a very engaging and charming person to talk with. At several conventions over the years, I was able to have some long conversations with the guy, especially since he found out I taught history. A lot of it was about his experiences in the internment camp in WW2, which I was very interested in hearing about. Broke my heart when I saw him tweeting about the Covid vaccinations and his opinion that those of us (who for very good reasons) didn't want the vaccine should be put into a camp. Very disappointing.

Actually the correct response also works as "I could care less". The contraction isn't needed in this case as the meaning is obvious and the word usage is still grammatically correct.
@@animalyze7120 Only if he has some caring - which is not what he meant. The contraction is a needless one used by far too many Americans - if you watch movies or TV made up to about the 1970s they used to say it in full.

Let’s fact-check this, ok? The content provider hasn’t been around since the original TOS aired on NBC, but I was 15 when I watched the original broadcasts. I talked with Shatner and Nimoy in 2006, worked on the Paramount Lot in the 1980’s, and most of what he said is WRONG. Shatner was hired to be the center of the action, known as “the money.” Takei, Doohan, Koenig, & Nichols were the 3rd tier, with Nimoy and Kelly being the second tier. All accomplished, respected actors, but lines that were written for others sometimes went to Shatner to move and improve the stories. Yes, it resulted in bad feelings among the cast, but it wasn’t selfish or vindictive. 😊
As I understand it, contrary to appearances Shatner wasn't concerned about himself. He was always trying to push the core trio of Kirk-Spock-McCoy.
Yes, and this is how I understand that Shatner saw it. He was there to do a job. He did it. And unfortunately, while Shatner saw it as business, some of his co-stars saw it as being personal.
@@davidradich9342 To Shatner is was a job like any other. To Nichols and Takei, it was HISTORY, look we minorities are on TV. Both side are in the right, but I don't blame Shatner for seeing it simply as a job. It lasted 3 years. It became HUGE years later.
Agreed. I was able to speak to the late Richard Arnold, and according to Arnold, Shatner was very chill and Nimoy was battling the bottle which Nimoy has admitted. I love them both. In regards to the feud this started probably back in the 90's, not back in the 60's. Yes, Shatner was the center seat and was self-centered and could be rude to fans, but he has mellowed a bit. Shatner has apologized for all his past behavior, but George has dragged this out over 30's years. I use to side with George, but he has nothing better to do anymore. Bill Shatner has come a long way and understands his mortality. I am sure Shatner does not want this childish bickering anymore. The character of Sulu was loyal and looked up to Kirk and that is quite obvious in the series. There should be peace before anyone gets any older. Walter Koenig told Shatner to his face what he thought about his behavior in Shatner's 'Raw with William Shatner.' Shatner asked for forgiveness and apologized. Let there be peace and warp away from the entity in 'Day of the Dove.' That is the moral of Star Trek. God bless Star Trek and all the Trekkies around the world.
richardslatin - I'm inclined to agree with you. One of Takei's beefs with Shatner is that in The Undiscovered Country, it was originally intended that Sulu's Excelsior would fire the torpedo with the gaseous anomaly detector on it, but Shatner had it changed so the Enterprise fired it. Personally I think it works better that way (apart from the continuity error of the equipment suddenly being on the Enterprise). As originally written, the Enterprise would have just sat around helplessly until Excelsior turned up. The revised version gave Nimoy, Kelley and Nicholls all a final chance to shine - to me, "It's gotta have a tailpipe" is Uhura's crowning glory - her idea saves the day!
Nichelle didn't decide to leave over any tensions on the set. She simply didn't see the value in her position because they weren't giving enough for her character to do. What MLK did was make her see that simply being there WAS doing a lot by giving children a role model, someone to look up to who reflected them. She wasn't the maid. She was an officer.
You're not entirely correct. She had relations with Gene Roddenberry and had angst over feeling like 'the other woman to the other woman' (it was complicated...ha! Understantment) as well as was facing 'discrimination at CBS' in a sense due to someone intercepting her fan mail so that she never received letters sent by the public. She had several reasons, but MLK's conversation with her blew her out of the water and she saw the impact she was having and decided to stay, despite Shatner's ego and other factors.

Shatner and Nimoy not reuniting before Nimoy's death is probably the most tragic.
Also... While I live Sulu the character, I used to be a big fan of George Takei, until I saw the way he conducts himself on Twitter. He is a cruel, nasty person. Maybe he wasn't always that way, but he sure is now. And that is just so disappointing as a lifelong fan of Star Trek.
I feel the same way.. I loved George as a person back in the day. and he was great on the Howard Stern Show. But Social media has turned him into a toxic individual.

I agree that George was pretty cool early on in social media, but he started with subtle nasty replies and posts, but then he kept getting more and more nasty is some of his replies and some of his posts. I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, but he just kept at it and increased his nastiness.
I quit following him when he started talking down to and being nasty to some followers that 'dared' to disagree with him on some of his political views. So when he says that he will end his feud with Shatner......... well let me just say that I will believe it when I see it. We shall see if he means it in the future.

The more I hear about this feud. The more I find myself on Shatners side. They were coworkers. I don't invite coworkers to anything. lol
The beef is that Takei imagined Star Trek as an ensemble cast, no one any more important than any other. Shatner saw Star Trek as a starring role for him and Leonard and maybe Deforest and that's all. He saw the rest of the cast as all extras and treated them as such. Its the same basic beef Jimmy Dohan had with Shatner. If you're apart of "And the rest", you had a fundamentally different view of their relationship. Its funny, because for all the spoofing and all the jabs that Galaxy Quest took at Star Trek, they never pointed this out, that the Star Trek lead basically treated the rest of the cast as extras.

Na shatner has always been egotistical. And he's two faced. Sure, he smiles and acts nice when it suits him, makes some money to appear at an event and sometimes it strokes his ego, but his jealousey of the characters Spock and Kirk and his disdain for the fan and Star Trek has shown through several times. The other cast members are dying off and the industry kisses Shatners rear so it's basically just history revision at this point.
Life is too short for petty feuds.
I'm a fan of all the regular cast members of Star Trek TOS. But they were actors, playing their roles (and doing it very well) They were human beings, and as with all human beings, had their issues. Nobody's perfect. I do find it sad that they did not get along as well in real life as they did on the show. But when you have a group of people with different personalities, there are likely to be problems. It's just human nature. TOS is and will always be my favorite of all the Star Trek series. And the cast is no small part of that.
It's even sadder when you consider that the casts for the series that followed got along a LOT easier off screen.
I think Shatner summed it up best when he said George makes an issue out of this whenever he has a book or appearance out. Most of these things are just for publicity. Shatner also said that Sulu wasn't in all the first shows, so after that they recorded some animations where they were never in the same room, then in the movies they hardly had a scene together so they really have very little to do with one another. But there's no such thing as bad press they say.
it seemed to be mostly just two actors who played more minor roles and were deeply jealous of Shatner for being the main lead. Neither Jimmy Doohan or George Takai were exactly great actors in their own right, and their careers outside Star Trek were limited to none existent. Shatner also seems to have a very dry and self-depreciating sense of humor where he blows his own horn at ludicrous volume and makes outlandish claims specifically to make fun of himself. Takai and Doohan didn't seem to ever get the joke there.

But likely there are probably instances when they both do it, since being actors with a huge following not using the press to take a short at your enemies would just leave you as nothing but a pin cushion while the other guy used it to jab you relentlessly.
@@lesigh1749 No, Shatners overblown ego is real. You can easily see it, like the time he made fun of fans georgian accents and Nimoy was highly offended since his own daughter was born in georgia. And before you insult Doohan remeber he was one of the brave warriors wounded on D Day in ww2. Unlike Shatner, he's actually fought against real evil and not just pretended to be tough infront of a camera. He was a man with accomplishments outside of the make believe of acting so of course when some puffed up pretty boy tried walking all over him he wasnt just going to accept it.
I remember Scotty, James Doohan, it might've been when Howard Stern was still on WNBC or maybe right after he had Doohan on and when Stern mentioned Shatner, Scotty's voice went up a couple of octaves and he started griping, "My wife told me that I could only do this interview if Shatner's name wasn't mentioned. 😂😂😂 that's pretty funny "My wife won't let me talk about him because my blood pressure goes thru the roof. Yep! And once when someone asked him about captain Kirk, he got all gruff and replied, "What? I got no problem with Captain Kirk. I like Kirk, it's Shatner I got ah problem with."
Billy Blackburn who had the wonderful presence to film back stage on Star Trek quite clearly said that William was wonderful to everyone and was always very nice to him and he didn't see any nastiness or diva behaviour. So I know who I believe in all this lets face it we all can have our off days but William is just not a nasty person certainly not knowingly!
Take note of how Nimoy says actors always react when a camera is pointed at them. Of course when it's a PR situation he's going to try and put his best foot forward. Shatner, however, has slipped many times and shown his true face. Takei has faced a lot of things over race and sexuality in his life and he's starting to rage as he gets older when he's not in top form and he's made several blunders. On the contrary, age has helped shatner calm down and not be as openly aggressive, but his past words and actions has revealed how offensive he is repeatedly.
It would be ideal if William Shatner, George Takei and Walter Koenig, the last three stars of “Star Trek” to get together, whether privately or publicly and just air out whatever grievances they have had.
Maybe they won’t become the best of friends but atleast be respectful towards each other because, most likely, within the next ten years they may no longer be with us.
They should do like Patrick Stewart did with Picard! Come back while you still can! It could work! Or cameo in Star Trek 4?

While Shitner has 248 acting credits to his name Takei has 243, how do you get 1/10th? His best was "Star Trek New Voyages - 1x03 World Enough and Time" easily found and watched online or downloaded free.

In regard to credits, Shatner is well know for a number of popular roles and characters, George is not.
I like Takei and wish he'd stick to being Sulu since there's so little time left.
@@mlt6322 I met George and he was an absolute pleasure to meet as well as his husband Brad, we had a laugh and a joke and he took the time to talk to me at an autograph meet in London whereas William Shatner didn’t even bother to acknowledge who he was signing for, just signing very quickly as apparently I heard he was in competition with Leonard Nimoy who could sign the quickest and get the most fans through the queue and believe me these two were fast. This is just my opinion and first hand account.
It's always sad when the TV characters treat each other better than the actors who play them.
Watching the show as a kid Sulu and Checkov were very important characters, as they actually controlled the Enterprise.
Nichele Nichols wanted to leave because she wanted to return to doing theatre. It had nothing to do with Shatner. The story about her meeting MLK is correct.
Oh my gods no. Look, her story is a tale in it's own right. She was 'romantically non romantically' involved with Roddenberry and felt like she was 'the other woman to the other woman" (..too complex for here), plus she was having fan mail intercepted and being discriminated by someone over there at the set or among the higher ups (I doubt she ever discovered who was responsible). PLUS Shatner's ego. She had a lot of things on her plate and yes, it was MLK who told her that her involvment in Trek as Uhura was bigger than she realized and to keep at it because she was doing important work by being a role model for people of color and being involved in Trek which was a show where equality and social advancement and human improvement were important elements that were vital to the future.
It was definetly a topic NOT centered around Shatner.
When Roddenberry got the go-ahead for the Animated Series, he brought back a number of his writers to work with the animation crew, but wanted to keep his voice-over actors to a minimum. He got Shatner, Doohan, Barrett and Kelley, but Nimoy refused to do it if they didn't bring in Nichols and Takei. He told Roddenberry, "you wanted to a diverse crew on your television show, but now all you bring in are white actors to do the voice-overs. I won't do it."
So they brought in Nichols and Takei and only then did Nimoy accept to be part of it.
I heard recently that Roddenberry had NOTHING to do with the animated series other than giving permission for it to exist.

Gene Roddenberry was heavily involved in the creation and production of Star Trek: The Animated Series. He was the creator of the series and had significant creative control, ensuring that the show remained faithful to the spirit of the original Star Trek series. @@user-cv1pj2vv1u Seriously, I listened to a 30 minutes youtube documentary on TAS and sure it may have been incorrect but I specifically remember them saying they wanted Gene to be more or less completely hands off or it was a no-go. As for his "dedication", is it not true that he bailed on TOS before it was over??? The actual producers say he was awol for MOST of the 3rd season. I always laugh when people try to make him out to be some kind of hero or visionary. What do you think all that was in Frist Contact about Zefram Cochran? His character represented Gene and his discomfort over being made bigger than life. Like most of us, Gene was just a flawed man.
i'm ok with Shatner not going to the funeral. When you're not liked you dont go to things like that because its about the family. I'm also ok with his filming for the documentary. Shatner came out of the old school era of gorilla filming and acted in some films filmed in the gorilla style.
Shitner is like Trump, he will never show up unless there are cameras or he's being paid to show, respect means nothing to people like them.

OMG - the feud started LONG before the Takei wedding, like decades before.
Takei did a youtube startrek voyages episode ' world enough & time'. Did a twilight zone episode, did a john wsyne vietnam movie that conflicted his tos time. He did a tv series ' green hornet. In tos 2nd pilot, sulu listed as a 'physicist'. If writers wrote more intelligent material for his character, he'd have more success. It's a competitive world we live in.
I rather enjoyed New Voyages. He and Koenig both had episodes. Frankly, I think the fan productions (New Voyages/Phase II, and later, "Star Trek Continues") were and are superior in many ways to the official CBS/Paramount shows being produced today.

A while ago i saw a youtube movie from 1990s promoting a startrek videogame. Premise was ' lower decks' style with Bill, George, Walter & a group of youngsters.
Say what you will, but something tells me this is more on George than Shatner. All of those "3rd tier" actors(Doohan, Takei, Nichols, Koenig) wouldn't have had much of a career if it weren't for Shatner, Nimoy and Star Trek.
George came to Adelaide in Sept. 2022 for an appearance, when asked by the MC who was his favorite Captain he volunteered Shatner. I vouch for old George because I was in the audience. Love to both guys, Xx.

'I could care less' mskes no sense.
'I could care less' does make sense if for example you care 25% about something and you want to lower that care investment to 20%. Then you would say you COULD care less.
Whereas saying 'I couldn't care less' means you're at pretty much zero and there's no lower to go.
The opposite is true, every time Shatner gets press, Takei has to do something so he gets some attention too. Takei has been a baby and overly contentious regarding Shatner and Shatner has pretty much ignored him. I hope Takei has finally grown up.
To have George call Bill a Cranky Old Man, is like the ocean calling out the rain drop for being a little wet....
It’s really sad. Sulu is such a beautiful character. Strong, compassionate and honorable. Unfortunately the man who gave us Sulu has held onto a bit of envy for way too long. Something Sulu would’ve said was a complete waste of time. But George just can’t let go. Just imagine how his life would be different if he’d been mature enough to be part of Shatner’s journey instead of whining at every turn.
Exactly. This clip is clearly trying to paint Takei out to be the victim. Where i have many testimonies. From many many fans who attend his conventions and appairently they are nothing but negative. Whereas Shattner's are more positive and have a bigger turnout. And it appears that Takei has always been jealous of Shattner's success.

There is no feud, because a feud takes two. This has been one-sided, Takei sniping at Shatner for years, and Shatner being somewhat bewildered by it all and asking for an end to it time and time again. Apparently now Takei wants to make it look like he is taking the high road. I've lost all respect for Takei. He has shown himself to be a small, petty man. I can only hope he stops his incessant whining, because it does nothing positive for the Star Trek TOS brand.
I don't think its one-sided .... Shatner is good at brainwashing his fans to believe in everything he said ...
The truth is that the cast of his co-stars mostly hated him as a big-headed ego centric star .... its not just Takei talking badly about him... Takei simply is more expressive than the rest of the cast thats all, and Takei is also quite a comedic person, why would he pass on the chance to have a go at Shatner with his great sense of humor ?
Shatner should just accept the fact that he was not friendly and nice to his co-stars all those years ago and humbly apologise for being an a-hole ... but nope, Shatner would carry on to bash back on them for being not as important and famous as he was .... why would you support a celebrity being so unapologetic for being an ego head and a meanie ?
@@88feji I read that too. The secondary cast felt Shatner hogged the spotlight too much. To that I say BS. Captain Kirk WAS the show. The role made James T Kirk larger than life. He was the total representation of a Star Fleet captain that every actor that has played a starship captain, or in the case of Sisko an outpost commander, has emulated. Picard, Sisko, Janeway, Archer and Pike are meant to be the swaggering confident leader of a crew of souls facing the perils of interstellar space. Star Trek never would have become the massive franchise with out Shatner’s Kirk. Imagine the actor playing Harry Kim complaining that Kate Mulgrew was hogging the center as Janeway. The best response to the others is, “You played your roles well. Your characters are memorable. Now sit down.”

And not for anything, half of Takei's complaints are ridiculous. Takei was a part time employee Shatner worked with on and off for three years, then did a few movies with a decade after that. He hardly knew Takei, by his own admission. And to this day he probably wishes they had NEVER met because Takei won't leave him the hell in peace. 60's TV was set up to be a certain way. The star and then everyone else. Shatner had enough to worry about when Nimoy took his popularity, the last thing on his mind was probably George takei.
Shatner has no reason to have a beef with Takei- Takei wanted to be revelant. Takei has never been able to let this go. I thought at first it was Shatner, but over time, Takei keeps yapping about something that happened 50 years ago.
I hope you realize that shatner was an asshole - by his own admission - to the rest of the cast. Yes, it is time to George to get over it. But no, its not all his fault.
Billy Blackburn was a stand in regular on the bridge. He's the guy who shot all those wonderful Behind the scenes videos for us to enjoy. He had nothing but praise for Bill Shatner. During the first season Billy was blonde guy on the bridge in the helmsman seat. I recall it being Takei that would always denigrate Shatner not the other way around. Shatner said he didn't know the minor cast because the series was about the three or four main cast and the guest stars. The minor cast was there for maybe a day a week of shooting. How many of you know ALL your co-workers well? Takei has been speaking out on his hatred for Bill to anyone who would interview him for many decades and Takei's"Wedding" was in 2008. Bill said once in a comicon stage interview that 'would you go to a wedding for a man you knew didn't like you especially if you weren't invited?' And Takei at one point did admit he didn't invite Bill. Later recanted when that info didn't serve him well. Also keep in mind as to Takei's character, He hated Walter Koenig the first few episodes because he felt Koenig was a threat to Takei's character in Trek.
Koenig had a much better role on Babylon 5 as Bester. It gave him more range both as a bad guy and a bit of a comedian.
Takei was shooting Green Berets in Georgia and the filming overlapped with ST S2 live action shooting.
Koenig was being brought on to replace Riley and since Takei wasn't there, got a lot of the more interesting character development since the character was more interesting and gimmicky. When Takei got back he was perturbed according to Justman.
Takei had always wanted the development he got in the first few episodes with the Riley character...but Coon's retooling put him in the chair as just a counter and button pusher as he had been in Corbomite.
They didn't want to play the Asian angle for camp so they mostly ignored his heritage...making him just another American. Everyone else got an ethnic or regional stereotype to play to.
My guess is Takei's beef was with Roddenberry, Coon and the directors...but Shatner was the avatar for hating on Gene.

Takei was a movie character actor in the 60s. Did pretty well. His TZ episode was very strong, but the episode was controversial so Serling and Cayuga Prod never showed it in rerun or syndication till very recently.
By 1975 his only work was Star Trek retrospectives, appearances and the hope that Phase 2 would happen.
Shatner after 1969 was totally broke, living in a camper shell and an old pickup, doing game shows and guest shots on forgettable shows. He then got TJ Hooker and was on top again.
Takei wanted a captain Sulu series in the 80s with a pitch script by Marc Zicree, but the producers really weren't interested. Such is the life of the thespian.

I think they’re both strong personalities who process emotion and reactions in different ways. I can definitely see some of myself in both of them. George clearly wears his heart on his sleeve, to a fault, and definitely holds grudges, to a fault. Bill can be aloof in attempts to avoid what he probably sees as a worse outcome; he’ll make a joke or brush something off instead of jump into what he might anticipate as a conflict. There’s certain personalities who will always naturally have a difficult time finding common ground, and anything that ever goes wrong is going to be wrong x10.
The problem is George never figured out that it takes two to have a feud and he hardly innocent in all this. I meet Shatner a few times and he can be an erotically jerk although i suspect this is due to need for attention he was missing when younger. It's also not all he is and remember on the set of Tekwar where he went at someone slighting George because he gay. There both more than people see on the surface and to be honest George kept this going far more then Shanter has. George went after Shanter online for no good reason. Of course Bill doesn't help matters by responding so in effect it's two kids calling each other names🙄

I loved William Shatner as Captain James T. Kirk. I really had no idea he was horrible to his some of his co-stars. Hearing that kind of stuff about other actors, I gave up celebrity worship years ago. Having been told wake up they are nothing like what I see in movies or on tv.

After over 40yrs of EVERY main co-star gripes about Shatner, it is obvious he was emotionally immature, scene-stealing, jealous of co-stars' getting attention, and an overall fragile BRAT to work with. But irregardless whatever conflicts behind-the-scenes, the chemistry on film made Star Trek a juggernaut franchise.

I think Spock was my favorite, and that Bones was really under used though he had a very critical role of shoring up Spock at times with his own charisma and 'humanity" or personality if you will. Spock really needed him to reflect off of to work well at times. Likewise, I love Doohan and Nicoles. I LIKE Kirk. But I can still admit that Kirk made mistakes and had his faults. However.. Shatner? I think he embodies a lot of things I think Roddenberry and Star Trek stood against.

Takei claiming that Shatner fires up the feud to get some air-time is a touch too rich for my taste. The feud, so to speak, is almost entirely driven by Takei, who frankly wouldn't have anywhere near the level of fame if he didn't fire shots at Shatner with predictable regularity. It's what keeps him somewhat relevant.
The truth seems to be that they're both big personalities, but Shatner has the success, the fame, and the love of fans. Takei seems to resent that and has convinced himself that he was somehow on equal footing with Shatner in the original series. Really not the case. He was a part-time cast member, and not one of the primary three stars, Nimoy, Kelley and Shatner.
I agree. I used to like listening to Takei and followed him on Twitter. But it gradually became apparent that he can be quite unpleasant, and watching 'To Be Takei' just confirmed this.

I sensed a big difference between Shatner and Nimoy, Shatner didn't appear to like the attention he got from fans and Nimoy did. I love the characters of both Kirk and Spock, and the rest of the original crew of the Enterprise.

I really liked Galaxy Quest. It was a perfect satire of Star Trek. Not only the show but the relationship between the crew/cast as well.
Not everyone deals with loss well, and if Mr. Shatner truly felt strong feelings towards Mr. Nemoy, the funeral may not have bern the best for him.
I’m not quite on George’s side, because I think he has been holding the grudge irrationally all of this time, but I also think that Shatner is a kind of a jerk and too full of himself to just acknowledge that his diva attitude might have made working with him not very enjoyable.
Its such a shame that so many folks tend to hold grudges that have absolutely no value. Ego will be the downfall of any relationship unless those involved realize its just that, ego and not anything truly important.
The number one issue seems to be that Shatner promoted the idea of the 'Big 3' on Star Trek, which cut down the time the others were involved in scenes...not the sort of thing that is going to make you love your captain...

It’s not a matter of envy. It’s a matter of Shatner being an egotistical prick who threw a hissy fit whenever the spotlight wasn’t on him. He got mad when Spock got more attention than Kirk, he got mad that Nimoy got to direct a movie, leading to him directing the worst of the original films. Whenever the camera would be on the supporting cast, he would try to convince the director to have the camera focus on him. It’s not just Takei, James Doohan and Walter Koenig also couldn’t stand working with him.
It’s very telling that whenever Takei criticizes him, his response is always “I barely know the guy. He’s completely irrelevant and jealous of my success,” which happens to be exactly the response one would expect from a narcissist.
We also have the account from an actor from the newer Star Trek series, Wil Wheaton, who confirmed that Shatner has a massive ego and behaves like an a-hole.
A still photographer introduced Shatner to Wil Wheaton on the set of Star Trek V. When that movie was being filmed near the set of the Next Generation TV series.

I became hyper-aware of the spandex, clinging to my body, and longed for the comfort of my fleece jacket.
“Well?” He asked.
Oh no. He’d asked me a question, and I’d missed it.
“Excuse me?” I replied.
“I said, what do you do over there?” he asked. There was a challenge in his voice.
“Oh, uh, well, I’m an acting ensign, and I sometimes pilot the ship.” Maybe he’d be impressed that I’d already logged several hours at the helm of the Enterprise D, all before the age of 16.
“Well, I’d never let a kid come onto my bridge.” He said, and walked away.
I bit my lip, and turned to say good-bye to the still photographer who had made the introduction, but he had vanished as well.
I walked back to my own stage with my head down, avoiding eye contact the entire way. When I got to the entrance, I found Mandy, and asked her to unzip my costume, so I could put my fleece back on.
As she unzipped the back, she said, “did you get to meet William Shatner?”
“Yeah.” I didn’t want to let on that I was upset.
“What’s wrong?” she asked, as she handed me my fleece jacket. There was concern in her eyes.

(After filming a scene) I was on my way back to my trailer, the DGA trainee stopped me. “Gene Roddenberry would like you to call his office, Wil.”

I changed direction, and walked to the stage phone. My heart began to beat hard in my chest. Had Gene heard too? WILLIAM FUCKING SHATNER had known Gene for over 20 years . . . if Gene knew that I’d upset him, maybe Gene would be upset at me, too!
I dialed Gene’s office, and told his secretary that I was returning Gene’s call.
“He’s expecting your call. Just a second, Wil.” There were two clicks, and Gene’s soft, gentle, friendly voice was in my ear.
“Hi Wil, how are you?”
“I’m okay. How are you?”
“Fine, fine. I understand that you had some words with Bill Shatner today.”

Shatner is in no way a bad person but he is a victim of his own ego I think. He doesn't purposefully go out to upset people but has on too many occasions been so wrapped up in his own purposes that he unintentionally rubs people up the wrong way. People like Doohan and Takei were/are strong minded personalities and had little tolerance for Shatner's behaviour. Miscommunication has seemingly had a lot to do with problems between Shatner and fellow Trek actors, especially between Shatner, Doohan and Takei and sadly Nimoy at the end. Funny thing is, when Shatner is not the focus of a TV episode/movie his ego seemingly drops away and he is often well liked by those he works with. Shatner has had great relationships with many of his fellow actors like Patrick Stewart and James Spader.
His fellow cast members seemed to adore him on T.J. Hooker, too. Shatner has always been a notably professional workhorse since he was a kid actor on French radio in Montreal.

I think the one unspoken dispute was with James Doohan. As Scotty, he was as important to the cast as Kirk, Spock and Dr. McCoy. He wanted to be paid the same as William and Leonard.

After three seasons on television and the big screen adaptations, one would assume that they are a family. Well, like any family, dysfunction will eventually surface somewhere during that time. I was in the theater in junior college and it occurs there because of many factors like the the casting(some actors are favored than others to play certain roles that after one production, that same actor is chosen for another leading role).
Star Trek provided a future in which all differences are put aside and alliances are formed to explore outer space. Today, the only thing that was utilized from Star Trek was some of the technology.
We, as human beings, have a long way to go.

I had the privilege of having dinner with Takei about 20 years ago. He said the beef the rest of the cast had with Shatner was the Captain would deliberately muff his lines in scenes when he thought the other cast members were getting too much air time. Takai said Shatner is extremely insecure and did things to get attention or more camera time. George said everyone on the set knew he did such things on purpose but as time was money often scenes were abandoned or cut short because they had to move to the next shot. Takei said one example the public never saw what an important conversation in the shuttle with Scotty going to the Enterprise. Shatner didn't have many lines but he kept smirking to ruin the shot and finally, it was cut. Scotty fumed about it for years.

But all you have done is solidify the fact George even at a private dinner with random strangers talks shit about Shatner behind his back. Not a very stand up characteristic. "Koenig" is pronunced "Kay-nig", not "Ko-nig." Do some research.
Actually, the "oe" is the variation of "ö" used in languages that lack the umlaut (so König becomes Koenig), and is pronounced with a vowel sound that doesn't even exist in English. English speakers _sometimes_ choose to use "Kay-nig" which phonetically is a _little_ closer to the original German pronunciation, and this is what Walter Koenig does. However they equally often choose to pronounce it how it looks to an English speaker. I have a colleague at work who does this; he pronounces his name "Ko-nig." In the 1970s sci-fi series "Space: 1999" they made the show's hero, Commander John Koenig (and all the other characters on the show) pronounce his name "Ko-nig" as well. This is not "wrong" it's just how they prefer it, and since neither pronunciation is correct in the original German, it's up to the wearer of the name. Walter Koenig clearly prefers "Kay-nig" -- or that's just how his family have always pronounced it since they assimilated to American culture and adopted English. They might have gone the other way, and that would be fine too.

One guy had lead starring roles in 3 separate TV series, recurring roles on other series, wrote two successful book SERIES, wrote nonfiction, was an accomplished horse rider and went into space in his 90s. The other guy has hated the former for over 60 years. Not a feud, just jealousy.

I heard Shatner say that he didn’t have any feud with Takei and really didn’t even know him. Shatner said that he would go onto the set do his scene and leave. He says years later, Takei invited him to his wedding and Shatner didn’t attend. Shatner said that he didn’t really know Takei and didn’t know why he was invited. The interviewer said you were invited because you’re Captain Kirk and Shatner responded “exactly.” Takei only had Star Trek as his claim to fame so he has to feud for attention while Shatner had a career after Star Trek and probably never looked back.
What great career did Shatner have after Star Trek? TJ Hooker? Priceline commercials? TJ Hooker is so bad it's funny. Shatner is so over the top in that show. It's hilarious. I did like him as Denny Crane on Boston Legal, however.
... William Shatner didn't do much of anything in the 1970s. The reboot of Star Trek with the S.T. movies in 1980s put him back at the top. The S.T. franchise salvaged his career.

Shatner's acting was crap for ages. It took him... YEARS to actually learn acting and not just project and overact and strut around a stage. Anyone can use connections and kissing up to get roles. I remeber Shatner on some stupid one shot made for tv movie about a ...gods i cant even rememebr but it was like a vacuum salesman who got tempted to cheat on his wife at a vacuum salesman convention. It was so pathetic, I mean everything about it was so sad. It's like in part how we get such crappy writers sometimes. They work their way up through the system, doing crappy small time jobs and whatever garbage the guy over them had to do to advance, and finally someone gives them their chance whether or not they are fit to write for that show/movie, and we get junk. That was Shatner for years, just doing crap and making connections. And I think one part of him learning to act was that old age calmed him down just enough to mellow his personality.

I agree. The fact that Takei is still mad about this thirty years after the last film they made together doesn't make it look better for him either. Unlike later Trek shows, which were ensemble cast shows, TOS was built, like most shows of its era, around a star character (Kirk). Spock and McCoy were of almost equal status, but Kirk was the star. Roddenberry himself said so. As a result, Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForrest Kelley got far more screen time than the others.
I think Takei is really being quite petty about all this, and another story, that Walter Koenig tells, really illustrates this aspect of Takei's character. Koenig said that he didn't find out until decades later, when they were making the movies, that Takei resented him for Chekov replacing Sulu in parts of several episodes. One of them was "The Gamesters of Triskelion," where Kirk, Uhura, and Chekov are kidnapped by a trio of aliens to fight gladiatorial combats for their entertainment. The original script had Kirk, Uhura, and _Sulu,_ being taken to that planet. Well, Takei had gone off, by his own choice, to costar in "The Green Berets" with John Wayne, which went over schedule, and Takei was thus unavailable for a couple of months. What the hell did he _expect_ the producers of Star Trek to do? They had a production schedule to meet too. Were they to put everything on hold, and inconvenience the whole rest of the cast, the crew, the producers, the studio, and the network, until Takei could get back? After _he_ was the one who _chose_ to go off, do something else, and be unavailable? The most famous saying in entertainment is "the show must go on," but apparently Takei never heard it, or thinks it shouldn't apply to him. Him blaming Koenig for this is not only petty, it's irrational.
Riiiiight... 50 billion news articles, tweets, video's with the term 'feud' in it and you say there's nothing of the like. Shatner and takaei both trading shots, but you say it's all smoke and mirrors. Ha. Gaslight away, I brought a mask.

Good for George for letting that baggage go. It can't be great to have that anger pent up inside for so long. And as for Nimoy's funeral, I've read that Shatner's daughter attended in his stead. I'm guessing Shatner was tired from his trip when he returned to LA and was unable to attend. I would like to believe that he would have gone to the funeral if he hadn't had the other engagement.
20 years difference between TOS and TNG but look at difference, TNG are still friends, probably like family. TOS , all thats left is a pair of bitter old men and Chekov.
William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy were almost exactly the same age, meaning that Shatner was about to turn 84 years old when Nimoy passed away. I don't blame any 84 year old person for attending or not attending any sort of event. Hell, his knees might have been bothering him that day.
My sister in law is from Montreal, and knew someone who baby-sat Shatner when he was young. I always amuse myself thinking of of sending him to bed. Ten year old Shatner > "WHY must I go to be now? WHY? KHAAAAANNNNNN!!!
It was Takei who started up with Shatner, not the other way round. I'm sure Shatner wasn't easy to deal with, but at this juncture, enough is enough.

In the book, Star Trek The Inside Story, there,s an excerpt of dialogue were Gene Roddenberry called both Bill & Leanord into his office to discuss the question of who,s the star. Gene explains in front of both actors, that Bill is the star of the show, to which Leonard Nimoy got up and left the room.

I think that Nichelle wanting to leave the show after season one had less to do with Shatner and more to do with being in a love triangle with Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barret.
From what I’ve heard, being in that love triangle was why she wanted to leave. Not because of Shatner.

Takei was a member of the supporting cast and Shatner was the lead actor. It looks like so much jealousy on Takei's part.
Takei is just seeing the show through the same window that we all see it through. I think time has done that. To thew viewer, its an ensemble cast. Shatner is right on a technical level that he had a more important role, BUT Takei is reading it the way it appeared, as if they were a family that cared about one another.

Funerals are over-rated. I'm glad Shatner didn't go. It would have made the day all about Shatner's visit and away from Nimoy.
Shatner had committed to a charity event the other end of the country. He sent his daughter to represent him at Nimoy's funeral.

I saw Shatner and his daughter talking once and Shatner had some inappropriate comment that caused his daughters eyes to buldge and her mouth dropped open. I think she just said, "Daddy!" and Shatner calmed down. I've never seen anything indicating his daughters arent just regular people that is to say 'decent folk' and seem to have gotten maybe their personality from their mother maybe? I have no doubt Shatner and Nimoy's daughters are just sweet girls that want everyone to think positively about their fathers and have no personal conflicts with the other actor themselves. But a daughters good behavior doesnt stand in place of a parents bad actions or examples. Some in fact learn to be good people because we saw how NOT to function from a parent.
LOL, was this video made by a Takei fanboy? The truth is that George has been bashing Bill for years especially when the internet was getting bigger and Shatner was doing Boston Legal at the time. Maybe Bill could be too cocky but the feud was pretty one sided and it seemed like George was looking for the attention.
I compare it to someone that is a starter on a basketball Team getting to play all the time to someone that gets on the court from time to time. My daughter planted college fast pitch softball and she was a starter as a freshman. She was in the batting cages before the game when the coach asked for the starters to come over where he was. She said that some of the other girls jokingly would say “ don’t worry about us slaves Jess you go ahead”. There were girls that had been on the team three years before Jessica got there and were not starters. There’s going to be some hard feelings. Jess would tell me she didn’t know how to respond but that she had to do her best. She would get a lot of publicity in the papers and the girls would say “ I read about you in the papers again Jess.
