Hi Tatum, this is excellent consumer journalism, thank you for this. Beauty companies hide behind between scientific jargon, and promise consumers the sun, moon and stars. Thank you for doing an easy, comprehensible explainer on the product and ingredients, I would love to see more "intelligent" beauty content like this.
I came across your account by accident, I was reading the comments on a Standard Instagram post. I'm so happy I found your account as it's difficult to find credible reviews from a South African about products from SA. Thank you!
Standard beauty definitely needs to be held accountable for their substandard products. I messaged them about their vit c serum (the smell, colour and consistency). It was so horrible and I reacted so badly to the product. When I messaged to ask if it’s supposed to smell like fish and have such a sticky consistency, their response was “if you don’t like the product, pass it on to the next boss babe and you can return it at your own cost” and I was like what the actual F and chucked it in the bin. Super disappointing response as we try to shop and support local businesses.
I now know I am not delusional when i stopped purchasing their serums as well. The quality is not it. It's too weak. I hope they do also look into their products as a whole.
A clear example of companies false advertisement and information and it’s so sad cause lots of consumers read what’s in the box and believe it. We thank people like you Tay. You are a gem. They're actually not calling it a mineral SPF on the packaging. I'm not gonna be able to use this product because of the high amount of alcohol denat. and the marketing lies make me feel icky, but is it possible that even though one of the filters isn't FDA approved, the sunscreen as a whole is? Idk how that kind of stuff works, but if anyone more familiar with the ins and outs of that, that would be great.
If they just called this a chemical sunscreen mist and removed the fda approved sticker and did not brag about being fda approved, then there wouldn’t be this controversy. The formulation is not great tho, I had to wash the grease off my face after making the video- we need to use a lot of sunscreen to get adequate protection, so if someone is just going to do 2/3 sprays, they really just wasting their money, so apart from the false marketing claims, the formulation is v bad for me personally

I am all for calling out brands and making them accountable however I think some of what is being said here is a little unfair towards Standard Beauty. They have obviously made mistakes with this product and not done their research properly however you cant just assume it was done intentionally. Give them an opportunity to explain. I have used many of their products over the last year or so and I have found every product really good and sometimes even better than products that are twice the price. I'm not disagreeing with the facts regarding the ingredients. It's the rest that I have a problem with. Everyone makes mistakes...at least let them try and fix it. Just my 2c...
I don't think she said they did it intentionally. She said it was a borderline negligent mistake. Some of the comments (including mine) are alleging that it's deliberate, but Tatum never said that.
If you sell a product you must have knowledge about its ingredients and and. You cannot release a product without testing it. When it came to RSA testing was supposed to be done. Now you see why nobody in RSA could fulfill her vision? Now we need to start questioning many other Korean brands. I'm a Korean skincare girl who now has many question Mark's.
@@curvykay6232 I don't think you need to be too concerned with other Korean brands. Korean skincare is amazing quality. You'll very rarely see Korean skincare labelled "FDA approved" because FDA approval is not required for skincare at all. I'm a cosmetic chemist and Tatum mentioned that the Tinosorb filter is actually a very good filter it just hasn't been FDA approved yet. So I don't know why they (either the lab or the brand) felt the need to lie about that? You very rarely see skincare products labelled as FDA approved because it's not necessary.
@@curvykay6232 I agree, Standard Beauty should have spent more time acquiring knowledge of the ingredients and testing. That is why I mentioned they made mistakes. All I am saying is give them the opportunity to fix and learn. With regards to Korean brands, for the most part they are the best skincare products in the world and best value for money with effective results.
@@melissapetzer3560 I didn't say Tatum said it was intentional. I said what is being said 'here' is unfair. What I did dislike about what Tatum said was that she would never purchase from them again. As an influencer, your words have power...that is impacting someone's livelihood. I am not debating what they did was wrong, and that they didn't do their homework and even maybe negligent however I dont think it was intentional. They've made mistakes, we should give them the opportunity to try to fix it. They do have some great affordable products.
I was super ready to purchase this product as I suffer with sensitive skin and acne and was ready to start with my spf journey so thank you for making this video as standard beauty hasn’t said one thing yet. Very disappointing.
Thanks so much for this review - why do I feel it was the cause of the start of the recall? Saved me from frying my sensitive skin 😂 Strange thing is the manufacturer is blamed, but you called it immediately by merely reading the ingredients on THEIR box that they sent out. Didn't they read their own product ingredients?
Hi, I haven’t used a mist spf before and I don’t like recommending products that I haven’t personally researched and tried on but I def will be on the look out for some reputable spf mists and revert back onto the channel 💕

NOW THIS? NOOOOOO. Double YOU TEE EFF! I took them at their word! Now I'm wondering about the other products of theirs THAT I LOVE. I've bought those products for so many other people. Please advise - their Alpha Arbutin, Niacinimide, HA and Retinol? I use the first 3. I feel HACKED!
Think their serums are still fine. They just needed to do more of their own due diligence for this formulation and claims. What they wanted to achieve was quite a mammoth and it makes complete sense why no SA lab was able to achieve that for them. The Koreans haven’t even been able to achieve this, and their skincare Gods 👀

Actually, I know the woman from the Insta live from our childhood in Germany - she is indeed the founder. I’ve always wondered how she was able to build a skin care brand, given that she only has a bachelors degree in business. Hence the good marketing etc, but obviously she has no chemical/biological knowledge - which wouldn’t be so bad if she had someone at the company who has to check the formulas. So I don’t think it’s intentional at all, I only think it’s negligent and an organizational error to have nobody (sufficiently) check the science behind their products and trusting blindly in the lab’s work.
Thanks for educating us sis. Then people wonder why we are hesitant to support local. Something like this happens then you rather look into the bigger trusted brands. Not saying that they are better but what else to do. After watching this I was doing alot of research and I came across another skincare brand called silki. But now I'm so hesitant to support local again. Because I really don't want to be taken for a 1😅. The platform looks exactly like standard beauty. I was wondering who copied who. But anyway thats off the topic. Thanks for keeping us woke!
That mindset makes complete sense. I’ve been getting a lot of requests for silki, I’ll have a review once I’ve used their products for sometime and complete my research on them❤️
It is so sad to see such big brands not having a true clue on skincare, just making products for the sake of it without understanding and knowledge 💔💔💔
1 whole year of working with a "reputable" lab in Thailand because SA doesn't "compare" and your product is full of misinformation and mislabeling *slow claps*. Sure sis. It's disappointing because this isn't the first video I've watched about the mislabeling and false advertising about this brand. I just jumped on the SA skincare wagon and purchased a squalene oil from them.. first and last purchase from me. Please continue to review these easily accessible brands from SA and stores like clicks and Dischem. Well done Taty. We need more people like you. I saw that they recalled the product. I'm so glad I found you. I'm going to learn alot from you 🙂
💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽 thank YOU so much 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thank you for telling it like it is... P.S I so wish I can unsee those nails (or lack thereof) on the Standard Beauty Founder...and she's DEFINITELY the Founder.
This review is so honest 👏🏾👏🏾 it confirmed my suspicions about the information they give vs the things they actually know about the ingredients
Nail on the head, thanks for your time on my channel hun🙏🏽💕
Despite verifications and assessments regarding the reputation of the supplier, inaccuracies came to our attention after the launch.
Hi Tat.. I love your honesty and courage 😘😍♥️will you pls do a review on nutriwomen dermaceutics spf 50 from dischem
Thank you so much!!! 🥰🥰🥰 it is daunting to be so bold BUT we are consumers and we must hold brands accountable when we have the leg to stand on it🙏🏽❤️
Thanks so much for this review - why do I feel it was the cause of the start of the recall? Saved me from frying my sensitive skin 😂 Strange thing is the manufacturer is blamed, but you called it immediately by merely reading the ingredients on THEIR box that they sent out. Didn't they read their own product ingredients?
Even if no credit is given directly, I’m glad that my voice could make a difference🙏🏽
@@SkincarewithTatumStarkey glad I found your channel! So nice to have an SA brand reviewer!
@@catherinerichter8720 thank you 🙏🏽❤️
Can you recommend a mist SPF?
Hi, I haven’t used a mist spf before and I don’t like recommending products that I haven’t personally researched and tried on but I def will be on the look out for some reputable spf mists and revert back onto the channel 💕
Thank you Tay ❤️
You are most welcome my beautiful ❤️
ALL OF THE SIGHS! THe way I was soooooo looking forward to this SPF. I set a timer for the launch - then I SAW denatured alcohol when I was about to clear my cart. You know how I feel about that. NOW THIS?
@@SkincarewithTatumStarkey PHEW! Good to know. Thanks a bunch.

Complete honesty and transparency dictate you give the full story, and when you can't let those who can - TELL IT.
You’ve been deleting comments which answer the “why” (recall) on your instagram, and everyone who is NOT praising YOU there is basically gagged! That is 100% UNETHICAL.
Just because the truth makes you uncomfortable doesn't mean it's erased. Everyone, brands included make mistakes - YOU DID!
Allow consumers to process YOUR mess however they choose. That's taking full responsibility.
Trying to mute the very same people you are trying to win over is NOT taking responsibility.
This mess has put YOUR name under an ethical magnifier and you are not coming off clean. You have to do better! THIS, isn’t it!
Thank you so much for making this video, keep doing what you're doing!!❤️
Thank you so much! ❤️❤️❤️
patiently waiting for the coco gel review
They are recalling both sunscreens so there won’t be a review 👀
@@SkincarewithTatumStarkey oh no was really looking forward to your thoughts on it :(
This is disappointing on Standard Beauty's part to say the least - wish I had seen this before I bought both of the SPFs, would love to know how they respond to you xx
Absolutely!!! They have left me on ‘seen’ and not responded, I will def provide feedback❤️🥰
@@SkincarewithTatumStarkey I'm really intrigued as to how they will respond . . .
I follow them on IG and also bought the SPF they are recalling and refunding :)

To think that I just came from their website to find the sunscreens sold out 🙆🏾♀️🙆🏾♀️🙆🏾♀️
Yes they put it on sold out shortly after my video released, atleast my voice is making a difference

The way I am commenting my little ass off on their IG and just getting zero response while they're out here posting stories about this as I type!
Same!!! I sent them a DM enquiring about my refund, and their literally leaving me on ‘seen’ n continue to promote this product in stories 💔
Dear Melissa, our reply time is up to 24 hours. Kindly allow that time to pass, before spreading wrongful information xx.
I love how they keep telling their consumers they're spreading "wrong information" as if we're lying. I think they feel losing a few customers won't affect their brand.
@@jamismith6705 yes they kept deleting comments of anyone who tried to refer people to this video
@@jamismith6705 Ja I don't know what wrong information I'm supposedly spreading... I left like 8 comments and a DM in the span of 3 hours and got zero response while they were clearly active on their IG because they were posting stories.
Must admit, they may have had made a mistake with their SPF but I do use a their products and it has helped my skin so much. Smoother, less marks, hydrated.
For SPF I use Heliocare and Eucrin and highly recommend as well ✨Thanks for the video 🌸🌸
Yes hun, the video is just about the spf. Don’t fix what’s not broken 🙏🏽🥰
I’ve been getting a lot of requests for silki, I’ll have a review once I’ve used their products for sometime and complete my research on them❤️
Shocking
It is so sad to see such big brands not having a true clue on skincare, just making products for the sake of it without understanding and knowledge 💔💔💔
Thank you Tatum ,I was literally waiting for you to review it, its a no no for me.
You’re most welcome❤️ I am waiting for them to discuss my refund with me because no! ✊🏽
Please review eksamel
Will def look into it honey 💕
I think that’s the founder
Thank you ❤️
1 whole year of working with a "reputable" lab in Thailand because SA doesn't "compare" and your product is full of misinformation and mislabeling *slow claps*. It's easier for us in Africa to get them than spending so much on the imports from Korea and US/UK. ❤️❤️
Love and support from 🇧🇼

Still a standard babe tho.
That’s great sweetheart! I have nothing against the brand❤️ I do reviews - the end 💕
This SPF is terribly overpriced imo anyway. I love some of their products but this was not it.
💯 - also a mineral spf mist, is indeed a unicorn
Was waiting for your review before I bought the product, hard pass!
Yeah I want a refund ✊🏽
Wtf this is insane !!!!
Incredibly hun 😩
