Famous Niueans learn the Takalo | Young, Gifted & Brown

Nofolisi Leslie Hala takes us backstage in preparation for the biggest Niuean Takalo in New Zealand. This Takalo group is made up of Niuean men of all ages looking to pridefully showcase their culture and connect to their roots through the art of Takalo.
Takalo is a Niuean war dance. Performed by an individual warrior or group of warriors, the dance is a formal challenge. The dance was traditionally performed prior to engaging the enemy with traditional war clubs. Follow along as they weave their outfits, paint their faces, and shake off those pre-performance jitters. We then get to see a moving and monumental Takalo that this village of Niue people put their hearts into.
Singers Tommy Nee and Malcolm Lakatani, and actors Shimpal Lelei (Sione's Wedding) and Haanz Fa'avae (Hibiscus and Ruthless) all take up the challenge to learn this ancient war dance.
"Young, Gifted & Brown" follows talented and passionate Nesians from different walks of life on a mission to leave their mark on the world. The series will profile different gifted young brown people from Directors to family lifeguards.

This one really makes me missed Nuie very much. I visited Nuie in February 2009 and had the pleasure of meeting The Hon. Young Vivian and The Hon. Sir Toki Talagi at the Parliament House, Mr Richard Hipa, Young Toni Kalauni, and the forever smiling Maria of Matawai Resort to mention a few. I live up to the plan to be in Nuie again after the global Covid 19 ends or sooner.
