- Ratlou Local Municipality in the North West has defended its decision
to procure 22 laptops costing R730 000 within two months.
Chairperson of the public accounts committee in the local municipality
Gaolatlhe Mokhope raised concerns about overpricing and the failure to
follow the tender process in line with supply chain policy for
purchasing laptops.

Yep. Gaming laptops perform better if you use heavy design programs. I dont think the municipality does much design. These are simply overpriced.

hp probook 440 g10 i7 13th gen 512gb is 20k, and you can get it at a lesser price, not 30K. The macbook is overpriced too. What are the extra costs for? And there's no need for such spec to run mirosoft office applications.

To all the IT experts here: these laptops are reliable better quality machines that can last for 10+ years. Slow, unreliable computers hamper work. I'm a bit concerned about the HP units, though, based upon decades of experience.

My local supplier has state of the art Lap Tops for sale with all the bells, and whistlers for around R9000.00 each.
R9000.00 X 22 = R198,000.00. - R730,000.00 = R532,000.00.
And what about one central computer with a Network?

1:36 I did the math and went only after seeing the list. They check out but the issue is that they bought the highest of ends in each category of laptop.
They quite literally could have saved R100 000 (being generous to them cause they could have save more than even this) because on top of overkilling it with the models and specs , they went and chose the most expensive shops and options to buy these laptops, all except for these ones(hp 15.6 512gb ssd laptop i7) because the most expensive options I could find is R26,427* very funny😂😂*.
We know that in real life they probably went and found deals then whoever oversaw this thing easily pocketed R100 000 in profit. I guess this is corruption after all.😂😂

Those are gaming laptops. they are the only laptops that need higher RAM, CPU, insane graphics capabilitie etc etc. I am a software developer and I am using a laptop that is 7 years old, there is no programm me or any otherr proffesion cannot load or run on an ordinary i3 i5 or i7? And here is the lie, programmes run on operating systems as the base, so if your laptop can run windows 10 / 11 there is absolutley no programme that cannot run on your PC coz who would the programme manufacture expect to load their programmes. This is pure lies

Absolutely no need for MacBooks and the MacBook prices are inflated by at least 20%. The specs are insanely high for a small municipality. The total cost could have easily been capped at R550k with reasonable laptop specs.

looking at the specs of those laptops, I can see why one laptop could cost R 33 000. i7 Processor, SSD Hard drive, 16 GB memory. Laptops of these specs cost that much....maybe the question is did they really need these power house of laptops?
