  • “On Balance” host Leland Vittert says the two most basic roles of service in society no longer appeal to Americans. People don’t want to be teachers or cops because they see how badly teachers and cops are treated. Until the prosecutors protect cops by locking up criminals and school boards protect teachers by enforcing discipline in classrooms, the problems will get worse, he said. Robert Pondiscio, former 5th grade teacher in the South Bronx and now a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, joins “On Balance” to weigh in.

Why be a cop? The pay is poor, it's very dangerous, and you can be sued into oblivion or put in prison just for doing your job. No friggan way.

That's because kids used to have consequences for their bad behaviors. Now everything is gentle parenting where kids are coddled and talked to only, with very little real consequences. Kids in schools are out of control.

I was a teacher, of students between 11 and 13, and there were days I was so scared of them, so scared of the relatives (when there were more days of suffering than good), I decided to quit, I was lucky I re-trained and I was able to get another job because I had an ulcer and Insomnia and it was not possible to carry on. is just terrible the lack of interest, the lack of respect, the lack of so many things. I am from a generation in which teachers were not strict or cruel, and we had respect, we went to school aiming to learn and to become good adults, but that is gone.

I teach elementary school and I see the same behaviors in little kids too. They are rude, defiant, and entitled. Some of them are violent and will throw chairs, bite adults, and hit them. I've seen it multiple times.

When I was teaching, I had a 5th grader tell me that she didn't have to listen to me. Apparently she got that bit of advice from her mother. 🤦‍♀️

Stuff like that makes me chuckle.
I would've told her that she doesnt but she does have to follow the expectations to be in this class, otherwise her mother can pick her up and teach her.

The schools are horrible, especially the public schools, the hospitals are worse, every public or civic job is worse than 30 yrs ago. Oh I forgot the military I left active duty in 2012, I have friends getting ready to retire they tell me the morale, and physical and mental training is down the drain

My husband is a public middle school teacher. Every day he comes home with one horror story after another. The kids are out of control and have no respect. Instead of being able to teach the few who want to learn, he spends a lot of classroom minutes dealing with bad behavior. If he sends a student to the office, administration sends them right back. The parents want to know why their kid is failing - even when they won’t take tests or complete any assignments!

Totally agree. I work at a school and so many of these kids are rude, disrespectful, and entitled. I never saw such behavior when I was growing up. Of course we had bad behaved kids but it was not to the magnitude that I see today. Kids are out of control

As a teacher, I'll take 100k a year for higher expectations, Ive already had all my classes above district average on assessments, so im good. BUT if youre going to crank up the expectations, I need the admin to have our back better and actually send kids home when theyre being a problem. The learning that occurs when you have a class of people who want to learn is phenomenal

It affects the great kids getting bullied to so full of anxiety they don’t wanna go to school. The school staff are not helping those kids and those ones the bullied not the bullies are the ones being underserved in my opinion. I’m about to take my kid out of school and keep her home schooled. Bullies get away with stuff it’s not on camera or not reported right away. I’m sick of it all.

Its like a prison. Kids tend to form a clic or group to have protection in numbers because the school fails to stop the bullies and punishes the victim if they defend themselves.

Really? Because In school year 2021-22, there were 3.2 million full-time equivalent (FTE) teachers in public schools (source). In 2019-20, there were 0.5 million FTE teachers in private schools (source). And In 2022, there were 708,001 full-time law enforcement officers employed in the United States, an increase from 660,228 the previous year.Oct 10, 2023

I'm in education and I even think $100k for 8 months of work as a teacher is on the high end, especially compared to local (Twin Cities) police officers who make under $100,000 a year for 12 months of work.

    • @ericreid8111
      @ericreid8111 4 місяці тому +2

In education vs a teacher are not the same thing.
If you're actually a teacher, youd realize that we spend approximately 6 weeks of time unpaid. Additionally, idk about your district but we have 9 months of school. 180 days / 20 week days a month= 9 months. Then add in the admin days and we're at 190 days. Then add in the average 5-6 weeks of unpaid time you spend grading, spend at PT conferences, at open house, going to a game for the kids, calling parents. You're now at 10.75 months of work.
Is it 12 months? No. But is it 8 months? Certainly no.

Less job security for teachers would lead to massive age discrimination and we need job security to protect us from incompentent admin. Police and firefighters have more job security. This former 5th grade teacher is part of the problem. The lack of educational attainment is not the fault of teachers. Ban cell phones, give teachers academic freedom and insist that parents do their job. I can only do my job if a parent even halfway does theirs. Teachers are being gaslit left and right by admin and parents.

People complicate simple problems which makes it impossible to separate the wheat from the chaff. But the answers are out there, even on UA-cam. But this burnt out teacher from the last century fortunately left before No Child Left Behind. The fact is, most children are behind, they will always be behind, and over-schooling them does no good if they really belong in trades training. And that’s two thirds of the kids. Because most people are too stupid for college. But by cramming the schools with three times too many kids we grossly depress the available money to pay academics teachers. Then also the lecture method is obsolete and should be replaced by online academy provided in school buildings in computer labs with big screens, one per kid. Because since everybody’s addicted to screens then let the screens teach them and so so at their own pace and not as members of a class which needn’t even exist in the first place then they’re most certainly not going to pay attention to teachers who love to talk constantly. Why do we expect kids to have superhuman tolerance for boring people? And yes, most teachers are boring dullards, that’s why they’re teachers instead of scientists or writers or artists or much of anything fascinatin and dynamic. And I guarantee you that most of the misbehavior comes from the kids who belong elsewhere because they’re certainly not going to learn anything.

Kids' behaviors are out of control and society has become way too soft on giving out consequences. Gentle parenting has ruined our schools because kids are now coddled and negotiated with instead of disciplined for their bad behaviors. Teachers are fed up with the constant disrespect and aggression from students and very little support.
