      He does starts with it in the first 2-3 minutes I then forgets it. He could have easily removed the GH5 part if he could not find half decent videos from 2700 clips. I face none of those issues with my GH5, although I shoot manual, GH5 autofocus is bad, but great image quality.

    fun video, always like your videos and understand this is not a A,B,C test but more of a 16 weeks of use compresed in to a short video review/comparison.
    in every way 16 weeks of use has a lot more insight.
    only thing i can say is looks like the canon has much more satration which will make WB problems much biger.
    kind of wish the GH5 had a bit more time too.

    Great comparison Dave. I’ve seen this myself with the canon R, when I rented one. Don’t really know what they did from the good old 5D2/3 days. But they have Definitely changed the tones some how. What I have noticed from shooting with a a73 is, that if people go in to a dark shaded area the skin tones move more towards the green, when they are normally just slightly in the red (well for me). But it’s the only big hiccup I could give it with the skin tones. Sony have really done well with the tone change in the 3 series. I now like them more than what I get out of my c100 mk2 and I didn’t see that coming

Would be good to know how that also matches up on with real world use... my GH5 is better than it used to be with Lumix lenses, but I rarely find it good enough for run-n-gun video work. Agree with you on everything you say about these three cameras. Either there is something wrong with your Canon R or it is simply a bad camera. I tend to think it's the latter as aside from the AWB, the way it captures the blue of the water looks completely all wrong, with poor control of highlight gammas and also the entire scene of the full sun lit out-of-water shots.
    You know what my favorite camera from this video is? The Canon 5D Mk3. That camera really nails the AWB and has the best color.

      @nessviggo 4 роки тому

      That would be AWB. I also find that too warm, but it’s designed so. It’s to keep the cozy feel, not to be correct. Canon has both because some like that extra warmth and still use Auto WB, and some, like me, like it to be correct and tweak in post to taste. So the two options are very different. So no fault, it does what it should, but it’s not perhaps what you wanted👍🏽

    • @onlysublime
      @onlysublime 4 роки тому

      @@DaveDugdaleColorado awb white priority would've given you the more neutral colors if that's what you wanted. The default awb tends to be warmer. That said, you could've saved a lot of editing time recording in c log and apply a quick lut. That would've been faster than editing an auto image. Plus since the R has such a high bit rate, you can really push the image easily (480 mpbs versus something like 100mbps of the Sony a73).

    Hi Dave. Most odd. As you know - better than me! - Canon is usually regarded as having good colour (or color!) science (ie looks the way most people perceive color) and Sony often appeared a bit green as they captured more of the gamut - a sort of technical rather than artistic approach. It would be really helpful if you could get your hands on another EOS R - not direct from Canon, of course, and replicate a just a few of the shots.Thanks for posting. BobUK.

    In fairness, the Eos R is in no way a camera you should be shooting video on, other than vacation footage. You'd think Canon would try to be competitive but they are running their regular "let's protect our cinema line" game. They got good AF though. I might still get a EOS R (at least if they come out with a model with IBIS) - as I have some EF lenses, and I can keep shooting video on my Panasonic G9.

  • @donk66
    @donk66 4 роки тому +2

    Nice video with out the usual UA-cam hype. I would have to say, however, that many of your comments are based totally on subjective opinions - especially your judgements of which images are too warm and cool. To my eye, the Canon R captures every scene in the sunshine better in terms of color. Sunshine, in real life, warms the colors. They should not be the same as in the shade or under cloudy skies, or indoors. Sony did not pick up that warmth and their WB seems to correct for the actual effect of sunlight warming the colors by making them cooler. In other videos I have seen, this happens with Panasonic as well. And I realize you took some type of measurement in your initial scene where you compare the exposure of the water, but the Canon is clearly overexposed and the Sony underexposed. Having owned both the R and the Sony A7 II, I am not surprised. The Sony underexposed everything by about 1 1/2 stops and the Canon tends to overexposed by maybe a 1/2 stop. I also briefly owned the Sony A7, and that underexposed pretty substantially as well.

    You're certainly no idiot, Dave. As you said, when you have multiple light sources, auto WB can be helpful, especially when you need to deliver the job quickly. Sounds like you ended up doing a lot of post-processing anyways, though. One advantage of using a set custom WB is that once you find the adjustment for the artificial light, or cloud cover, you can set that as a preset and copy it to all affected clips, which is faster than trying to fix auto WB issues that change depending on the colors of objects within the scene. You can even correct transitions from one light source to another by applying the corrections to clips, and fading the clips between each other. Of course, I don't use Resolve, so I'm not familiar with how all this is done. On Vegas, it's drop-dead simple. And the new version is even starting to incorporate Resolve-style color grading tools.

    There's undeniable hidden magic to the 5DM3 - always look so appealing and magical. It is so sad that technology many times go backwards as many camera designers are more "engineers" than "working professionals" who are more artsy and aware of color subtleties. This reminds me of the Audio world, where the high-end recording studio still using Neve Pre-amps and consoles from the 70's only because the Sonic quality became only worse through the years.
    I was also curious about Panasonic GH5 said very little of, I am always stunned by the GH5/GH5s look. lately, I came across this video which suggest that Panasonic has an "Analog" Sensor in contrast of a "Digital" sensor. which again, reminds me of the audio world: ua-cam.com/video/li3rWqxdggc/v-deo.html

    So Canon has 2 AWB options (Ambient and White Priority) and you don't like the one Canon picked out of the box. Got it.

    Sorry you're getting a lot of jerk comments! I get a bunch of them on my channel too. I guess that there are a lot of people out there who think that there's only one way to shoot video and that anybody who dares to try to share something that they're passionate about on youtube, but not done in exactly the same way needs to be punished for their transgressions!
    Sometimes it helps me to feel better to go check out the channels of the worst and rudest of them, just to confirm that the vast majority of these "experts" have exactly 0 videos uploaded to youtube.
    Anyway, your conclusions in this video seem sound enough - and completely agreed that there are times for "auto" settings. If we all had unlimited time to set up and light every single thing as well as a dedicated focus puller, then maybe there would be no use for autofocus/auto white balance/auto iso... but I like to find cameras where I can reasonably trust the auto settings for times when I'm out vlogging, etc. If not in a controlled/quiet environment, it's way too easy to miss one or two settings and then regret it later.
    Don't let the jerks of youtube comment sections get you down too much!

      @@DaveDugdaleColorado The title says that "Comparing _cameras_ for Video" Their strong and main ability is shooting in 4k, so that's why I expected comparing in 4k. Because the high speed ability is actually poor in this type of cams. I think you should add (In slow-mo) to be clear in my opinion. Anyway, thanks for the video, you did a good job.
