hey guys here is a video on replacing the rear disc brake pads and rotors on a 2008-2013 toyota highlander , sizes of bolts are 14mm for the caliper bracket bolt, and 17mm for the caliper bracket bolts.
don't forget to clean your hub surface and use brake compound on all exterior sides of pads for lubrication

I have a 2008 model Highlander. Another tip, if you don’t want to hit the brake rotors with a hammer to remove them, use a 8mm x 1.25 bolt (turns with a 13 mm socket) & it’ll remove the rotor super quickly, an ABSOLUTE lifesaver!
Great video!
Torque Specs: Rear Bracket to Knuckle: 58 pound feet, Rear Caliper to Bracket: 32 pound feet
Thank you! I was just wondering about the torque spect and noticed your comment.
Torque depends on the year and trim.
Four years after you posted this and it's still a life saver. Thanks for sharing. Need to do my 2015 Highlander.
Glad I could help , thanks for watching
great video! got my rears done today following this guide. the dealer charging over $500 for just fronts or rears is crazy.
...i may have been able to pull this off without this video, but after watching you, I have no doubts. There were some things you did that I would not have done instinctively, so I really appreciate you taking time to put up this video.
Dude.. you make it look easy. Thank you for the refresher course.
Thank you for showing how you cleaned up where the new parts are going to be installed! My Backyard mechanic (Hubby) NEVER does this!!
Great video, great quality.
Thank you for this value added upload.
Good job of explaining all the details and tricks. Thumbs up...
Thanks! Completed mine today saved big $$.
Shocking the rust ring out of the rotor is the advice that helped me in removal. Thanks!
yeah it can be a pain sometimes
Great video, you are a good mechanic! A few suggested comments: Include toque values for the 17mm and 14mm bolts. I loosen the brake bled valve when compressing the brake caliper piston so the old fluid does not get pressed back into the lines and reservoir. Also the brakes should be bleed. Include instructions on adjusting and setting the emergency brake and how to check if they need replacement. The stud cleaning tool was a new one for me, very through. Thanks
Brilliant job man..thank you for sharing..
Do you happen to know if this applies to a 2014 Highlander by any chance? There's not much on the rear brakes for that year and model. Thanks!
great video. Recommend torquing bolts to specs
Hello joe just a question, i bought my 2013 highlander brand new since 2013, soon ill bE changing the brake pads. So my question is should i get shave now or i dont have to just put a new brake pads on it?.
Good video.
Thank you
Question I replace my brake pads month ago from now.
I made a mistake and how to change the rotors it will be a good idea to replace an hour or just leave it
Thanks for the video
Great video! Thanks!!!
what is the torque for the front & Back caliper bolts and the bracket bolts? Thank you!
Thanks! this helped me!!
great to hear , thanks for asking
Hi Joe. I really like your videos, they have been extremely helpful. I would like to get one of those wheel stud brush attachments that you used in the video. That looks like it gets those hard to clean areas very nicely. I am wondering if might be able to post the a link for that tool. Thank you.
richard johnson hi richard i will try and get that done today for ya , thabks for wstching and the kind words
Thank you Brother
One of the caliper pins on my 2010 Highlander has a rubber tip. Is this inserted on the top or bottom insert of the caliper bracket?
late reply but should be on the bottom i believe
Hi Joe, thanks for the great video. I am gonna to do mine this weekend. One question, do I have to release the parking brake when I change the rear rotors? Thanks!
Yes you do
thank you.
well done video, very comprehensive too!
thanks man , new style of filming trying it out for a couple videos
+JoeTheAutoGuy great vid very smooth finish
+JoeTheAutoGuy did you always want to be a tech

Thank you, done. Not a mechanic but saved money and happy wife.
Should I replace the rotors now or just leave it
Gracias
On our highlander ,the rust ring was bad enough that I had to loosen the parking brake adjustment. My question to you, Joe, is how do you adjust the parking brake properly and is the parking brake 'auto adjust' type or only manual adjust?
there is a small hole you adjust through you should adjust it up so there is very little resistance but not free moving and it will auto adjust once that is done
JoeTheAutoGuy Thanks.
Do you have to adjust the parking brake to make sure it’s ok
If it doesn’t hold yes
hey joe nice job.
and how can i rich you, im really need to take some mechanic lessons. can you teach me? thankyou.
thanks, i spend a lot of time making videos to teach people what i know. i hope that is enough if you have any specific requests let me know i will be glad to try and help you out as well as maybe get a better idea of what you fell you need to learn
awesome!!!
glad you liked it, thanks for watching
One thing to remember is to use silicone based grease like sil-glyde on the slide pins as it is not oil based it's silicone based. Oil based grease will cause the boots to swell and break down
great tip and absolutely correct
Dirty hands handling new pads and no bolts torqued to factors specs? Just crank them on.........
What was wrong with the old brakes?
warped rotors and overheated pads
Very good instructions. But joe left out the most important and most difficult part. Releasing the E brake. This is not an easy process and the rotor will not come off unless this is released.
why didn't you add how to do it?
I had to do my camry with a philips screwdriver, dont ask me how XD
Filmed in Nausea-Vision!
Silicone paste on slider pins
Where’s the adjuster on the e-brake? Can’t release the rotor. Why does everyone on UA-cam skip this part? 🤦♂️
Why no gloves?
If it gets on your skin it gets into your body!
Camera is not stable.Unnecessy movement.
Yeah I did a head mounted go pro on this one some like the in your face movement some don’t haven’t done these since
Four things would be helpful to change or add to your video. One, I'm dizzy due to the camera being affixed to your head. Two, you mention using a crow bar against the rear suspension to free the rotor due to rust - it would be helpful to not gloss over where you are placing the bar / on what suspension part, so the viewer does NOT damage any components. Three, your video assumes that after "shocking" the rotor you will be able to get it off - as I can't get one off, I need to know which way to back off the emergency brake star adjuster, so I am not tightening it and making matters worse. For the real novice, it would be helpful to show how it works and how to do it. Four, you should show how to replace the emergency brakes - again, your video is assuming the e-brakes are fine. Otherwise a very good video.
If you don't like the video, make one yourself. No offense. I think he did a great job. No one is perfect.
You have to understand that his main goal is to get the job done right. Filming AND doing a brake job is quite a difficult task.
