This is not a hymn, it is one of 17 part songs composed by Sullivan.

I want this played at my funeral…but it has to be by this version of the King Singers who produced such a clean, stunning rendition of Sullivan’s music x

"The Long Day Closes" was written in1868 by Sir Arthur Sullivan, who was indeed one half of the duo Gilbert & Sullivan. This piece was often performed at the funerals of members of the D'Oyly Carte Opera company, who performed their Savoy operas from 1870-1882. Search my uploads for a clip of Paul Phoenix (the tenor in the above) singing Sullivan's "When a Merry Maiden Marries" (from The Gondoliers) for the Queen Mum as an 11 year old chorister.

It's probably just 'typos' but in fact the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company performed the Savoy Operas professionally continuously from 1878 until 1982 in the form of the 'old' company, [prior to, and during the first production of 'Pinafore' the company was funded by others in addition to Richard D'Oyly Carte's input, and was not The D'Oyly Carte Opera Company until substantially into the first production.] - There have been firm proposals immediately before the uncertainty now generated by Covid-19 to re-institute professional performances by D'Oyly Carte as the result of the generosity of a distinguished individual benefactor.

Sullivan was famous for his choral music and hymns and love songs before he worked with Gilbert.
Both were marvelous in their own right and magical together. Beautiful vocal performance!

His finest work was done other than in the well-known collaboration with W.S.Gilbert: try The Golden Legend, The Light of the World, his serious opera Ivanhoe, the Symphony in E, etc......etc.....!

@paracletelux This is a very good summing up except for the fact that the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company did not come into existence until 1877 when (as the Comedy Opera Company) they performed THE SORCERER. THESPIS (the first G & S) was performed at the Gaiety Theatre by that houses stock company and never entered the D'Oyly Carte repertoire. TRIAL BY JURY did not enter the repertoire until the SORCERER revival of 1884. The company eventually disbanded in 1982 (not 1882 as stated.

Robbertstoop, this part song is by Arthur Sullivan (1842-1900), the composer of The Mikado and HMS Pinafore etc. . What are you drivelling about when you say it's by an older Sullivan? Being written in the 1860s, it's technically by a younger Sullivan; the same man, nonetheless. Don't be fatuous, unless you wish to conform to prevalent youtube standards . And don't make any assertions until you're sure of your facts.
