The crazy thing is when a possum is domesticated they actually go through both a physical and mental change and are different from wild ones, they actually really become physically fluffier and cuter. No joke.

I agree that diet must play a part in their appearance.
Three years ago I started feeding our backyard wildlife. We live in the city and life can be pretty rough for the animals. Now the opossums and the skunks who come regularly look amazing. Thick, shiny fur. The skunk tails (the display of their health) are huge and gorgeous.
Humans pamper their furry kids so they have optimal nutrition.

Possums and Armadillos are irrationally hated and feared. But they both eat ticks by the dozen. Anything that eats ticks is a friend of mine. Also, they’re affectionate.
Yea but you pick up the wrong armadillo you’re gunna be trying to pick up your fingers lol
Just information for anyone. Possums are naturally disease free. And do not contract rabies, they also can withstand poison and venom from a variety of predators. And they make great pets!

I've had 2 pet opossums during my life. Both of them were really sweet babies.
It makes me so happy to see other people falling in love with these amazing creatures. We had rescued a tiny baby opossum two years ago during a hurricane. She wasn't able to be released so she became a very important member of our family. Her name was Peep. These animals are so loving full of personality. She slept in the bed with us, potty trained. Sadly we had to put her to sleep two months ago from medical complications. We have her ashes that stay above the spot where she slept in our bed. I never thought a opossum would steal our hearts and that we would truly feel a part of us was missing but she absolutely did. They are misunderstood animals and people have not been taught how amazing they are but the opposite. All animals deserve a chance, they deserve respect and as humans it's our responsibility to help the innocent animals have a chance at a successful life in wild or in some cases our homes.

Sorry for your loss, it is incredible just how much an animal can impact our live’s, the bond between human’s and other species can be as strong yet different than to another human… maybe it’s their innocence or vulnerability? Or just the unconditional Love and joy they bring us. I am so interested in Opossum’s, they look and act adorable and inquisitive - sadly from what I’ve learnt they do have shorter life span’s that many other animal’s - probably shorter in the wild… you gave them a second chance at life and a life of security and the bond of family. I have saved the ashes of my cat who was incredibly unique and my companion for over 21 year’s - grateful for every day I had with him, he’ll be with me always.
was he actually 100% potty trained? I just rescued one from its dead mother and he kind of goes near his water litter box sometimes......... but most of the time not.
Yeas, they are very intelligent, and can be very sweet and affectionate! They are also very good for our environment, they each eat thousands of ticks every year/tick season

We adopted blind adult, long ago, who quickly became our sweet baby. He slept in our bed with our boa. We all got along great.
Two nights ago one of our wild opossums leaned against my foot while eating for the first time. Normally, only the skunks do that. Very exciting.

Opossums are so affectionate, it honestly baffles me that they're seen as pests when they make truly lovely companions 🥹 I knew a guy in grade school who had one named Chip, and Chip was just a floofy goober who loved everyone he met.
So glad someone is showing how sweet all animals are when approached with kindness...he is adorable.

I rescued 2 baby opossums a week ago. No local shelters or rehabbers got back to me. They were attacked by a local cat. One didn't survive. The other one is doing better. However, I'm concerned it's already become too domesticated. At least to the point it may not know how to survive on its own. I've been looking for someone who has experience and may want one as a pet.
If I lived alone, I would keep it, but my roommates wouldn't be too keen on it lol.

Clean potty trained in 2 minutes! Just give them a little box. All nine babies went potty in the litter box at the very same time. I had 2 possums they both lived almost 6 years. Bella was so pretty with short nose and long black eyelashes.

My aunt had one of these critters, it was named Pancake . She also had a pet chicken that lived on her front porch, it was named Dinner !
Once you think of their hissing as a cat meowing you can start befriending an opossum. They really make great pets but a bit high maintenance due their inquisitive nature.
They're crazy but fun.

Roo is so adorable. 🩷 I love opposums. They eat ticks. Ticks are evil. Plus they are just so adorable. They are welcome at my house. I feed them a variety of food that is good for opossums. I have one that stays here. I bought a heated house for him. I didn't want him to frostbite his cute little ears and tail. He's not a pet, but he's not afraid of me. I think he knows I'm okay and he's safe here. He's been here since he was small. I wish I could post photos. I love to watch him eat. 😂

They are beautiful animals. I just wish they lived longer than a few years. I had 2 of them in my garage over the past few winters. I put blajets in a garbage can and trained them to use a cat litterbox so they didn't have to freeze their feet when it was -30F. Such unique animals!
I love possums..they are so underrated! 😊Intellectually they rank above dogs and only a little under pigs. They are immune to snake venom and when severely threatened they will go into a coma and emit a mucus that makes them smell dead! They are marvels that have survived since the dinosaurs.

I really hate how so many people just hate these creatures they always think they're ugly and disgusting it really makes me angry because I've raised possums myself and these are some of that sweetest softest cutest little things you can never even interact with. I wish that negative view on these creatures would go away
I think it’s cause we generally only see them at night and at the last minute when they are perched on a fence a few feet away and look like a giant rat in the dark.
