That man was dropping more knowledge telling a joke than most people will ever know. Awesome video. 👍🏻👍🏻
Absolutely.
Gooseneck barnacles are seriously expensive in Galicia: 50 euros a portion.
This guy was so right on… I could listen to this man for hours… His set up is absolutely amazing
So true!
Absolutely brilliant and so generous of Mark to give us all an intimtate look inside such a remarkable boat and remarkable captain!
Anyone considering solo cruising should watch this video carefully! Years of experience and knowledge conveyed in 45 minutes!
Big thanks to Mark and Sam for bringing us along for their talk, that was great.
That man right there would be a hell of a Captain to learn from! The amount of single hand sailing that he has done is insane! Much Respect to you Sir!!!!
Best ⛵ channel on UA-cam!
Never mind best sailing channel! It's the best channel period.
@@JohnCornellierfunny you say that
Sam purports to hate editing, but his channel stands out not just because of the sailing, but because of his art direction
The thing is, it can't really be trained; you either have it or you don't
The spare style, the whole gestalt are what makes his vlogs so engaging.
What an amazing and modest man, so much in that interview. Thank you Sam
Holy cow man! You’re an incredible interviewer! There was never a dull moment! I’m so impressed by the way you handled that and how smooth/easy you made it look. It was so unbelievably natural brother. I freaking loved it and hope you find others that interest you like Mark does. Thank you for that. Educational and entertaining! You can’t beat this!
Mark Sinclair is a legend. I enjoyed following his progress in his last race. Good on you for the great interview. Two thumbs up.
These interviews are awesome Sam. They are a glimpse into a world in which I am mostly unfamiliar but fascinated. A couple of years ago you inspired me to take up sailing despite my immense fear of open water.
I’m still getting comfortable with a dinghy on a lake and I don’t think I’ll ever get to the point of being able to circumnavigate the world solo using a sextant but I think many of us enjoy living vicariously through your adventures nonetheless. Thanks for that. May the winds always be in your favour.
@@OmegaProxyright on. Glad to hear it
+1 for the ultimate hitchhiker's guide: a man of culture.
I've carried two tires since I was in 25 foot seas in 1999. We came into Eureka California and while we were drinking for 3 weeks the local fisherman said they used tires as drogues. In the storm I actually used my jib as a sea anchor and positioned it from the bow roller and my main winch. Its a Lin and Lee Parley trick so you can steer your boat's angle to the waves. Do what this gentleman says but make a bridle with another line coming to your main winch. Take your main line off your bow or stern depending on the peace your trying to get. Mark has neat systems. You make great vids Sam.
I am fascinated by ocean sailing. All my life I have dreamed of sailing the world. Life and family have taken me in other directions. I’m seventy now and it’s just me and my wife. She’s not a water person so we RV North American and enjoy it so much.
I live vicariously through you and other sailors. Thank you so much for letting us tag along.
Love that guy! Id probably sit and let him talk for as long as he was interested! What a personality! Hard to imaging this guy at sea for 200 days without contact with another person!
Thanks for this Sam, Mark Sinclair is the most accomplished sailor I've ever been informed about.
Living sailor.
When you're going around the world single handed visibility and clarity are paramount feachers.what a courageous bloke 3 circles around the world
What an awesome guy who found Wilson, brilliant character
Wow, 44 minutes really flew by, great video, awesome guest!
This guy is brilliant, true sailor. Wow, he deserves to be knighted , great stuff, thanks for the content
A fortuitous meeting! I am glad you took advantage of the opportunity to interview such a knowledgeable sailor
A man of the old school, you can almost read his mind just because he has the "Hitchikers Guide" amongst his books 🙂and carrying all those tapes when his whole library (books included) would probably fit on his smartphone ! Great Video Thanks Sam
Thanks Sam. A real treat. Mark Sinclair is going to be greeting the 5.80s as they arrive from their Transat Race in Antigua in a couple of days because they’ve been crossing so fast (over 125 miles a day) that Don McIntyre couldn’t get there in time. Don is the founder of the Mini Globe Race and does the Golden Globe and Ocean Globe races too. Captain Coconut was sailing Don’s Swan in the last OGR. He’s a character and knows his stuff!
he is completely NUTS!! in a great way... LOL :) ...Don
This goes to show that school is not the only way to be knowledgeable, years on this sea made this man a scholar beyond many could dream to be
I grew up UK dingy sailing I had a topper. Hearing this Aussie talking boat talk brings back so many memories. He is so knowledgeable. Thanks for
the interview Sam.
A smart guy. He's prepared for practically everything. I'd love to see more interviews with the people you meet. Sailors are always interesting. And I second his recommendation of _The Riddle of the Sands,_ one of the best sailing novels ever.
I'm in awe of you guys that sail off to distant shores, even around the globe. Great video Sam. Love hearing directly from guys like Mark.
Dude's setup for every scenario. Even has a Wilson for when it all goes wrong 😂
"Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy" is a must have for any adventurer. What a great guy, and a great interview. And I'm glad to see that clock, especially as a former US Navy sailor. As soon as you got in the salon I saw it.
❤ Five part trilogy!
Best video yet. Nice to hear that wonderful Australian accent. What a great boat. Great set-up for the dangers you all face.
" that thing is next level!" 😆 awesome for this newbie to hear two well seasoned sailors discuss their tackle. Fair dinkum, bloke had forgotten more about sailing than most know - 3 Globes!!! Rick Beato level YouToobing
Great interviewee and great interviewer! Two good men.
The 34 footer must have appeared huge after Sam's boat.
Fantastic to hear that Australian accent, surely the most pleasant, the most mellifluous of all English speaking accents.
Thanks Sam and hi from er.... somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere.
Do people here realize the Golden Globe first rule is to navigate with tools from end sixties tech? It does complicate things quite a bit. 😅
Thanks for this excellent interview, Sam, there’s a LOT to take in there and then some, even for people not preparing small boats. Mind boggling how much it takes to prepare a boat for the globe, proud to say I experienced it rather close with Mark Slats, friends of me actually helped take care of that project….
Excellent interview.... It's obvious to see that every aspect of that boat is very well thought out based on many years of experience..
Wow. Very knowledgeable. I'm not sure I wouldn't confuse where all those sheets are going in a pinch but no doubt he's used to it by now. Great Job Sam.
A true voyager....such a pleasure to behold such a man in his kingdom
This guy is a legend. Best sailing channel on youtube for sure.
Great video , mark is a legend , I don’t think he will ever be a fast sailor but he will get you there . One of the guys you want to be off shore with!
Cheers Warren
What an incredible distraction. Thanks for sharing this gem. 🙌
So glad you found Mark - I follow you and the GGR and now the Mini race. The interview was so interesting, glad you did it!
A great stroke of luck meeting Mark in St. Lucia. The round the world routes he has sailed are areas you will want to explore in the future. A really interesting conversation. Great job Sam!
I enjoy getting to spend time with you in your world! Thanks, Sam!😎
So much knowledge. What I took most from it is ‘make it strong, keep it simple’.
Great video! I don't know what's the greatest part of the whole thing: The skipper, the boat or the journalist! ❤ It's lovely that he travels with his cassette collection. Thanks for the video!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Agricultural engineering = simple and rugged. Maybe crude but repairable in the field (or at sea). A great description
Damn good. Additional pearls uncovered in this non-rushed approach...the GGR boat tours pre-race are often time constrained. Thanks Mark and Sam 🙌
A real sailing channel with the most outstanding sailor/engineer interview.
Thank you.
I remember the Whitbread with the huge boats at Port Everglades. Didn't know they had a single-handed class.😊
Best boat tour ever. Ty both.
Sir Les Patterson's little known nephew.
Good to see him thriving.
Outstanding interview Sam. Quite possibly a clip every sailor new and old needs to view. Keep it up man! most excellent content. Best wishes from New Zealand.
Such a good tour! Your questions to detail made this so interesting. What a legend.
Thanks to you both for doing the interview 👌
Riddle of the sands....I read it every summer when I'm on my boat. Lost count on how many times I've read it now. Absolutely brilliant
Great video. Got a lot of great ideas. Much too complicated for my style of rigging the boat. But did get some stuff I can use. Thanks for the video.
What a great video. I can imagine Mark stood in the cockpit with mountainous seas shouting come on is that all you got. I’m sure he would be more respectful to the weather gods than to taunt them but he looks like he can take a battering as well as the boat can. Love the dunny door. Tape cassettes blimey. Hope he keeps some desiccant packs in those boxes. Now just gotta get a copy of The riddle of the sands.
It is a fine book. Enjoy!
Thought it was pretty cool the way the mast was beefed up. Very interesting video, thanks eh.
got to love Capitan Coconut great tour of a special boat, looking forward to him welcoming in the MGR boats in a few days from their transat.
Coconut !!! She's Awesome !! Thanks for the good talk you guys!
Far out, learnt so much is that video, thanks Mark!
This was a very informative video. Thank you very much for taking the time and effort to make this video.
Great interview and tour, thanks for the show and tell, Sam and Mark Sinclair.
Great video Sam I love watching boat tours especially the ones that ppl actually use not just live in cool video brother
Brilliant interview Sam … lots of great pragmatic ideas 😁🙋♂️🇨🇦 you might be rearranging a few things on Pickled Herring 👍your questions were precise, considerate and demonstrate your understanding and knowledge ..thanks to you both …
Thank you for the wonderful interview. I love those interviews that you do. I’m a big fan.
I’m envious of the lifestyle. I’m trying hard right now to get to where I owe nothing to anyone so I can purchase my boat and start my own adventure. I will be at least 60 years old before I can start, but I’m excited anyway.
I wish I would have started years earlier.
Great video Sam and just as useful for those of us who single hand for coastal or short trip sailing. Reassuring to see that many of my mods reflect Mark's approach and lots of new ideas to ponder over too. Particularly interesting to hear your & Mark's discussion of preventer v. boom brake. This season I am going to be trialling a boom brake using a climber's 'figure of eight', reportedly just as effective and under $20, versus over $200 for the specialised bit of kit.
Thanks Sam. Great job interviewing and I loved all the information you two shared.
Sailing legend is born, thanks Sam!
Fantastic interview and tour... Thanks Sam!!!
I love this guy, what a legend!
Thanks Sam, Mark is a top chap..Can learn a lot from this guy.
That circumnavigation around the Globe of Mr. Sinclair was pretty daunting Sam. Especially the Southern Passage where the currents are horrible. Nice episode.
Love this bloke, a classic Aussie
As per usual your sailing channel never disappoints ! I sure hope one day out sailing our paths will connect. It would be a great pleasure to meet you wnd amazing sailors you have met.
Thanks Sam!
Lovely chap, you kept your head high with your knowledge..Wilson!!!
Terrific video. Mark's boat is set up well. A lot to learn from him. I love his tire drogue. Drogues seem to be one of those bits of kit that the more you know about them the less likely you're going to spend $6000 for a big plastic thing.
I like his bright yellow life lines raised up a bit. I bought my boat from a safety trained fireman. Dave had the life lines running along the top of the bimini and then in a diagonal down to where the cutter connects to the deck. They never get in the way. I've seen it now a few times on other boats. I've also made a tether: 1" webbing with locking carabiners, one at my pfd, one at the end 4' and one 16" back from the end. This way I can cross where the life line is tied to the stay by clipping the extra one before unclipping the other one. Four feet is long enough to do everything I need, but short enough that if I fall I can't go over the life lines. I think Pickle is set up like this. I do want to add a tether extension at the cutter so I can go all the way out to clip on the spinnaker without having to unclip to re clip forward.
I'm curious why Mark didn't put a couple of batteries on the port side and then some of the cans on the starboard so the boat can be trimmed all the time. Of course that means some heavy wires running along the ceiling.
This video is GOLD Sam, thanks for sharing
Great guest.
That was quite unexpected, but really interesting. A lot of informations ! thanks for sharing and congrats for your own navitations !
The amount of ropes would drive me crazy, but it shows how complex he is. That comes from much experience.
Was anything important about this boat missed. You both covered it all.😊
Props mark! Thanks a million as always Sam we Loveee you
This video is great! I love the utility of everything! Thanks for sharing!
Captain Coconut is a legend. There are a bunch of GGR videos about him and the boat if somebody is interested in hearing more. Nice work Sam.
captain coconut is a legend! Good episode Sam 👍👍
What a great man greetings Mark I really enjoyed Sam’s video your right you deserve a knighthood for such a feat 👍
Really great interview. Wonderful sailer for sure.
Phenomenal interview. thank you Sam and Mark
yep, primo video with M Sinclair. very much enjoyed the discussion
Wow! There sure is a lot to take in and learn on this video. It is almost dizzying. It will be a fantastic reference for future hard core round the world solo sailors .
Those barnacles were scary looking! They remind me of cabinet pull handles. I've never seen anything other than the small round white ones that clump together on the bottoms of boats in New England waters which look a lot more innocent than those - by far.
Glad you can absorb lots of knowledge from him.
Love boats like this-built for adventure! Some great tips for solo circumnavigations.
Wow. Great interview. Awesome music selection.
Thank You for this video. It was very interesting and informative.
What a badass! Note he says 'when I roll' first, rather than if! 😂
I’m way to ADHD for all that however, Mark is obviously a Jedi master, a scholar of the art of sailing and prepared for every situation or opportunity the sea throws at him. He’s a wealth of knowledge and an excellent communicator. I would say he should be teaching or writing a book but it seems that it would be burdening him with an undue punishment.
If I was you Sam I would follow him around as long as is possible without him filing charges 🤣
What a bloody legend!
Mark is a legend
Wow. Great video. Thanks, Sam. I'm sure I will watch that many times as my Triton 28 comes together. Amazing to think of how many miles he has traveled in that little fiberglass cup. He copied my folding companion way hatch door idea! J/K.
great episode, thank you
That was awesome thanks Sam and Mark a lot of invaluable knowledge.
