  • @KiwiStag74
    @KiwiStag74 Рік тому +7

If it was a Toyota, I'd say "Bugger!". Well, the V8 runs at least, eh? You made quick work on that swap, mate. Amazing what you can do with stuff you got lying about the shop too.
Just as a warning, I've had several ignition modules that died intermittently. Engine would get warm and they'd conk out for a couple of minutes and then fire up like there was never an issue - usually about the time it took me to lift the bonnet after cranking it a couple of times. I'd check for spark, the old cow would fire up on as many as she could, I'd put the plug wire I was testing with back on - thinking the problem wasn't spark - get a few miles further down the road and it would repeat the problem. Took me a few times of it doing this to find the problem. Once it was a loose connection on the coil and the others it was the module itself overheating and dying. From that perspective, you cannot beat points and a condenser, but those buggers have their issues as well. I'd still rather have an electronic ignition in the winter though, for sure.
I'll never forget the time the first one started dying - I was in 3rd going down a hill and the rev counter kept going to zero when the module quit and bouncing back up when it came right again. Every time it came back to life there was an almighty BANG from the rear of the car as the unburnt gases in the pipe suddenly ignited. The bloke following me reckoned one of the belches of flame was at least 3ft long! All I know was that it really lit up the back of the car when it happened at night - certainly enough to see the looks of surprise on the faces of the people in the car behind me!
After checking all the wiring connections to the ignition module, if you got a spare module in your stash, that would be the first thing I'd change. One thought - if the switched power going to the module - if it comes directly from your ignition switch, you might want to check that too. However, my money is on the module being temperamental. As to the gauge cluster being dead, the power gets fed through the gauge first and then it grounds out at the senders to various degrees, which in turn moves the needles. If there is a common power to the fuel, oil and temp gauge - either in the back of the cluster or through a fuse or relay - then that's where your problem lies. Otherwise I can't see how all three gauges can read nothing unless all three senders are bad.....so its more likely there is a common power fault. Check fuse, then relay (if it has one) and then power wire. Hopefully it just a dirty connection.
All the best - and please let us know how you get on. Cheers!

I always thought the 4.3 motors never got the recognition they deserved. I found them cheap and dependable for the money. My 2nd gen Blazer had the fuel injected 4.3 and always ran very nicely. Always had great responsiveness. I never had any power train issues at all in that 4 by 4 SUV which I drove over ten years. I thought it tempting to change out the center point injection system to a multi port, with the adaptation of a neat Delco replacement kit. Then I thought, if it ain't broke,....... don't fix it!

I'm sure by now you've got it fixed, but I'd still suspect you had a bad HEI ignition module. Had one doing the same thing in my 78 a few years ago while camping. Would fire up and run like hell for a little bit before it just lost spark completely and died. Turn the key off and let it sit for a few minutes and it would fire back up and run a little farther. Did that several times before it finally died altogether. Fortunately my old man taught me to keep a spare module in a ziplock in the glove box for just such an occasion and I wasn't stranded 2 hours from home.

Wow never those things are trash have you seen anyone have good luck with one ? If so send me the video of them bolting it on and driving away that carb has some garbage in the seat is all and it could easily be fixed in no time w out installing 02 sensors and maf sensor and programming it and then still having issues w it kill. The battery like he did and opos start all over nevermind higher pressure fuel system and the list goes on for a. Over complicated carburetor say I'm lying !! If it was fuel injection ok but to swap is stupid and a waste of money for what a better cold start not better performance nope so what was that again two thousand dollars later and it still won't run right again say I'm a liar ! All those aftermarket injection systems are nothing but an over complicated expensive carburetor that still doesn't work right ever show me a video of anything besides that please do I'm dying to see it ..

Not on a bet they are too expensive and for no gain show me one person that had good luck w one ever and besides that the higher pressure fuel system and again no performance gains maybe a better cold start.aybe but I can set theT q jet to start like. A champ in zero degrees so again 2000 dollars later what have you gained nothing but you think you look cool cuz you can afford to throw two grand out the window if so call .me .Mr window lol

No need worry about pressure washing everything; little bit of oil/grease protects them from the old tin worm. Great content as always giving pleasure to us in the UK here. No electrocution, fires or fingers in fanblades - safety is getting from third to second place !!

Add in the time making the videos, its a task.
I have been slacking, just lost interest in battling with the gopro.
Soon i will get back in the swing.
I sure appreciate all you do, enjoy you interacting with Duff.

I like the fact that you used the correct motor mounts, I had a manifold problem on the exhaust hitting the valve covers. I stuck an LT1 in a 58 Delray. I had to grind the little lumps off the manifolds to have a little space between the valve covers and exhaust manifolds. Doing it right never makes you a hack.

A friend of mine in Grafton has a Ben Adams 383 Stroker and he's looking for something to drop it into. That truck would have been perfect!

Love the budget projects. If you can, make follow up videos sorting out engine swaps and other projects. Be nice to see what it would take to get the gauges to work after engine swap for example.

I never understand all these “complaints” from the opinionated. It’s your truck. It’s yours to do as you wish. Keep shooting videos your way Mort-oh and Duff.

Good (and timely) video today. Had the same intermittent problem with the ignition module in my ’77 LeSabre with the Pontiac 301. Solved with new cap, coil, module, rotor, and ground wires. So many issues can be traced to ground wiring in an old B body. Very frustrating though; twice she had to come home on a AAA flatbed!
God has absolutely blessed you with the love of Duff Dog; the way he appreciates your pets at the end of the video says it all. Love the Duff!

I would do always a few things differently but than again I don't own anything in this video. But regardless it's always fun to watch every video. They all have some valuable knowledge. V6 where never that foolproof to begin with. Seen many of these engines being scrapped for various reasons. No shame in not washing the TH400 cause you don't even know if its any good in the long run.
