When I was about 10 years old in 1984, I enjoyed reading fantasy stories. These books often had pictures of dragons, knights, etc on the cover. One day at my day care facility, one of the staff members suddenly grabbed my arm from behind, pulled me hard, and snatched my book away. She said it was a “dungeons and dragons” book and that I was worshipping Satan. She had an enraged look in her eyes. For a moment, I thought I was going to have to fight for my life against an adult. It was insane and scary. I was made to sit in the corner the rest of the day. I did not go back to that facility, but it was never clear to me whether I had been banned or if my mother (who was not happy about this, to say the least) simply took me out. This experience had quite an effect on me and I had a cautious and very suspicious attitude toward adults thereafter.

i had forgotten about the dungeons and dragons "fad" and also "Magic The Gathering" cards....idiots act the way that staff member treated you--it's paranoia too and fear. There was a school in new york state that had a sort of witch hunt due to something like this. The whole town got involved. It all started with a parent's accusations that a teacher was using some type of witchcraft. Hysterical fear.

I had the misfortune to be rostered in a SDA school when I was about seven or eight. One fine day, the teacher stood in front of the class and held up a little model smurf. He then announced that anybody caught with one of these would be punished and sent home, as they were tools of the devil sent to corrupt our malleable little minds. I was never caught, though. I guess my Dark Lord was watching over me that day 😇

They used to hire people with little to no moral fiber to teach in public schools. For over a decade, I've witnessed the types of characters one would see at a carnival side show to subway-mumblers.. it's like they'd grab them from the street and suddenly they're teaching literature to your kids.
When the withdrawal is over, they'll be tweaking, glass eyed and irritable. Known for throwing large objects impulsively which is good because they won't act so sleepy all day.
I really wonder what their eligibility criteria was for teachers bc no way every one of those creeps earned a Masters.

Another part of "Satanic Panic" was the panic over satanic messages being cryptically recorded in popular music lyrics which could only be directly understood if the record was played backwards. I had a direct drive turntable with a two stage on switch, so I could have power to the cartridge on while power to the motor was off. This way I could play records backwards through my speakers to see if there were really any messages there. One real one was "The music is reversible, but time is not. Turn back, turn back!" This was at the beginning of Fire on High on the ELO album Face the Music. Not satanic, but I found it myself.

Fascinating topic. I was alive during Satanic Panic and it definitely influenced my childhood. I’d probably compare it more to the “Q” phenomenon than “cancel culture.” It had more of a conspiracy aspect to it rather than a piling-on of mistakes.

    • @somexp12
      @somexp12 3 роки тому +3

That’s fair. I believe, however, that “cancel culture,” or stuff peripheral to it, *does* drift into conspiracy theory territory at certain points. It just doesn’t put any central power at the core of the conspiracy (as QAnon does), but exaggerates the relevance of certain cultural trends and finds evidence of those trends under every rock and branch. The Satanic Panic, as long as you leave out Satan, seems to have been over claims of a similarly diffuse trend.
Also, QAnon seems to be limited to a fairly narrow group of people, whereas the Satanic Panic as well as “cancel culture” have been far more mainstream phenomena.

I remember hearing about the macmarten daycare case and initially being horrified but eventually questioning how all these claims could even be possible. Yet I was afraid to speak out publicly about my doubts because I might be accused of being cold-hearted in that I wouldn't believe children who were abused. So I chose very judiciously who I spoke to about it - I remember at the time my mother helping me express my feelings about it. I trusted her not to think I was a monster for questioning the claims.

I had friends who called themselves neo-Pagans in the 80s and 90s. I went with them to a lecture at Leicester University in England. When we arrived, the lecture had been cancelled due to public pressure and we were threatened with death by the local Christians who believed us to be Satanists.
We camped in a field and had events there instead. The local paper denounced us, saying they didn't want us but bragged about how Leicester welcomed strangers with a great deal of warmth. It soon became clear what kind of warmth they had in mind.
A paper published a letter which ruminated:''What should we do with witches? Some might say we should put them on probation.Others would suggest a community supervision order but I say we should burn them at the stake.''
On another jaunt our camp site was infiltrated by undercover reporters who exposed named individuals in the tabloid press. Many lost their jobs and some had strokes or heart attacks because of the stress.
There had been children present. They came to no harm. Considering what we now know about certain Christian churches, we can see the populace was looking in the wrong place for child abuse.

My oldest child was born in the 1980s and entered part time daycare during that time. I was a relatively young parent (18 at her birth) and a little naive and idealistic. I was shocked by the atmosphere in daycares at the time - all the paranoia on part of the parents and all the defensiveness on the part of the daycare workers. Because she was my first child, this was my first parental experience with child care workers. I'm so glad we're having public conversations about this moral panic.
My father was a psychologist, retired in the 1980s. I remember him lambasting the notion of recovered memory syndrome, telling me a lot of clinicians practicing it were likely doing more harm than good. At the time I didn't know what to think as I was younger and inexperienced. Now I understand more and see my father's critique was probably accurate.

There are so many stories I could tell about this. As an academic who studied history, you often need to remind yourself, "these people did not know this was The Age of Enlightenment," no one ever woke up and said "I am living in the Colonial period".....When I first read the phrase, "Satanic Panic" as an adult it was in reference to the WM3 case. I had one of those moments, ok I lived through "Satanic Panic" without knowing it had a name and would be assigned to a period of time.
I had an extremely fundamentalist Southern Baptist mother, who found an even more obsessive religious group to commiserate with outside of our church. Some examples: I was not allowed to go to arcades or to anyone's house if they had video games because Satan could use them to get into your mind. I was not allowed to see ET bc my mother believed "Extra Terrestrial" meant that the creature was from Hell and "they" were trying to make him cute so the devil would be appealing.
Also, Don't forget the whole Proctor and Gamble witch hunt over the moon and stars symbols. Mother was disabled and a single parent, so money was a problem. She threw everything in our house in the trash that had a Proctor and Gamble label because of the so called "witchcraft" symbol and we could not afford to replace everything.
The Shining - yes, I was at my best friend's house one night, she was raised by her aunt who was even worse than my mother, and we had to get on our knees in her aunt's living room and ask God for forgiveness because we invited Satan into her home because we were watching that movie. The reason we chose The Shining is because it wasn't a "demon" themed film. That same friend was not allowed to read Lord of the Flies (required) in high school, because it was a synonym for the devil.
I could go on, but I am taking up too much space as it is. I will say, my church was not quite as extreme as my mother was as an individual, but I can recall our youth group being taken to hear Mike Warnke several times. He advertised himself as former Satanist - Born Again Christian who assisted the FBI with rooting out the occult. For anyone who enjoys charlatans, he is worth googling, and these are the type of people the adults were encouraging us to look to for guidance.

A far more apt comparison to the Satanic Panic of the 80’s is today’s Quanan believers. Both complete bullshit, fed by evangelicals. Cancel culture has it’s own problems, to be sure, but Dr. Grande, you bring it up a lot in your videos, when other social aspects of culture are more comparable to the topic of the video. Just a thought from an appreciative fan. ☺️

Or 😈😆 I think it was a perfect storm. The fact is sooo many kids were kidnapped from the streets or even their homes in 80s and some were tortured by sadistic psychopaths.

There is an excellent TV movie that was done about this case originally on HBO in the mid 90s. It is available here on UA-cam. Has James Woods. Absolutely terrifying. Indictment: The McMartin Trial. I'm going to go watch it again now.
