    The problem with people today is that they believe that you must be the same in order to be equal. There's nothing wrong with femininity or masculinity; they are equal, but different. They also both exist in each of us, some of us leaning more one way than the other. Femininity as a concept should not offend anyone. I'm still proud to be a woman and do not have to make myself more like a man to be proud!

    Maria was making basic statements about femininity around the world. She never stated actual opinions on those standards. Feminism allows women to be feminine. It's not very feminist to put her down for living her life the way she wants to live it and loving her body and herself the way she feels she needs to. Who are we to judge?

    • @pompompoopin
      @pompompoopin 9 років тому +36

      ***** J.K. Rowling would be disappointed with this level of sexism. Boys are allowed to be who they are and girls are allowed to be who they are. Feminine or masculine. You are not insufficient because you are one way or another. The Harry Potter series shows dynamic female and male roles displaying both masculine and feminine traits in both genders. Not to mention Dumbledore is a homosexual so it's very likely that in his community there are people who display both traits and he is thus accepting. The audacity to shame his good name you poser

    • @arubyskye
      @arubyskye 9 років тому +1

      ***** Also why are you laughing? Matters concerning gender equality and Harry Potter are no joke

    • @arubyskye
      @arubyskye 9 років тому +2

      ***** Maybe masculinity is something you need but how dare you say that everyone should fall in line with what you think is effective, but is in reality quite damaging. Also JK Rowling herself admitted to Dumbledore being gay. Look it up. And you should give a shit about what's in Harry Potter because if you have any interest in the series, as it appears you do, you should know better than to belittle gender equality, a theme prevalent in the series.

    What I find amusing, in regards to this ongoing 5-year debate about Maria's views on femininity, is that about 90% of what she says in this video she is simply reading from the Wikipedia entry for femininity. ;) It's a relaxing ASMR video she made to help people like us sleep, not a political soapbox spiel. Enjoy listening to/watching it if it triggers you, or don't if it doesn't. *shrug* It's personal preference for the ASMR aspect, that's all.

  • @betweenXtheXstars
    @betweenXtheXstars 9 років тому +2394

    Listen, if you are truly a feminist, then you believe a woman should have the right to choose her own way in life. If Maria choses to be classy and traditionally feminine, you would be contradicting your own feminist ideals by not supporting her. Therefore, if you are here complaining about this video in relation to feminism, you are not a real feminist; you have requirements and expectations for women to meet, similar to a misogynist.

    • @infidelkast
      @infidelkast 8 років тому +43

      I love Maria and I watch this video every day to go to sleep, so I don't agree with the dissenters but saying they're just as bad as misogynists is hilariously wrong and not what feminism means

    • @betweenXtheXstars
      @betweenXtheXstars 8 років тому +27

      +Nicole Bisson I didn't say it was what feminism meant. I said feminism means you spey women, and this they should have a right to present themselves hope they want. I was comparing misogyny to people who call themselves feminists and believe women should all have to present themselves in such a way that contradicts what might be considered traditional.

    Anyone can be as feminine or masculine, dainty, delicate, or tough as they choose to be.
    Femininity can be empowering. You can be a strong person AND have delicate mannerisms or what have you. The power is in doing what you want to do. A woman should not attack another woman for wanting to be graceful or feminine.

    Definitely one of my favorite asmr videos, so so so lovely! To those who are upset about you talking about femininity, please keep in mind that feminism and the fight for gender equality is about allowing both genders to express themselves however they please, and if that is sticking to more traditional gender roles, that is okay :)

    Having watched Maria for so many years now and watching her grow, I have noticed her progress. I feel like in this video she seems kind of sad, innocent, and not as confident. Now I think her presence has changed a lot. She seems much happier and so much more confident than before. Given this progression, I wonder if she still feels this way and what she has learned while growing up over the past few years.

    I appreciate how Maria owns her femininity. She is who she wants to be. She knows that gender is performed, she's aware that there is a beauty industry, she's informed on the different standards in several cultures and time periods. Confidence is part of her style. Lastly, the traits Maria describes are part of what draw me to her videos. She is flowing, gentle, and kind. She soothes through her presence. I love the tingles and the relaxation she gives. Thank you for this video, Maria.

    • @ohwellwhateverr

      Gender is not “performed”, you’ve been reading too much Judith Butler. Men and women are innately different, as are femininity and masculinity. We should respect our nature rather than falling for these cynical ideologies that seek to make us all androgynous drones.

    I feel like I remember you getting some flack for this video back in the day due to the subject matter, but I’ve always appreciated it and still do, especially the hairbrush sound. I’m very much a millennial feminist and think there’s nothing wrong with appreciating and recognizing femininity and how it relates to oneself. I also like that you talk about the subject matter and how it relates to different cultures and time periods.

  • @analiesewiedenbeck9105
    @analiesewiedenbeck9105 8 років тому +17

    It's really interesting...during the part where Maria was talking about cultures going to extremes such as body alterations to achieve the feminine ideal, it occurred to me, interestingly enough, that even today in America women alter their bodies to achieve the modern feminine ideal. Think about it, cosmetic surgery such as nose jobs, breast and butt implants are all to achieve a "beautiful look." Not much as changed, Maria!!

    Why hasn’t anyone kept in mind that this was posted in 2012, her opinions could’ve been different then from nowadays. As it says in the description the purpose of this video is mostly for sleep and she was only explaining the ideals of femininity in different cultures. Femininity views have changed drastically in the past 6 years and so has Maria, and probably her opinions too. I don’t believe there is a certain way to be feminine but everyone is entitled to their opinion even if you’re strongly against it

    Dear Maria,
    I have to admit that this is my favorite video that you have done. Your list of words to define feminine traits reminds me why I am grateful to be a man. Not that appreciating these traits is not universal, but being a man makes me appreciate them from the male perspecitve. The list reminds me that true beauty transends what meets the eye and is a reflection of what touches the soul. Thank you for reminding us all of this simple truth.

    I feel like femininity can't really be define, so many people have different views of what it is to be feminine and that we shouldn't confine women, or really anyone, to fit into such a broad thing. If you consider wearing makeup and dresses feminine, that's great! If you like to cut your hair short and wear sweatpants and consider that feminine, that's wonderful! Wear and do what makes you happy and comfortable, not what someone else wants you to be!

    This is actually one of my all time favourite videos of yours, Maria. I would be soooo interested to hear your take on womanhood and femininity where you are now in life - I think your ideas will have matured a lot. Not to say that what you say here is wrong or anything (of course not, and you're not even presenting it as YOUR viewpoint or anything), but I think, watching your newest videos where you talk about your views on life, you'd have some very interesting insights in what it can mean to be a woman. But just ... this video ... the extended hairbrushing and the soft talking and the tapping and ... everything about this video makes me tingle like crazy.
