Thanks Jess, honestly (and I know it’s a bit of a boring answer) but whatever you like! The main thing is for you to enjoy it! I’d say play something you like playing that you know well, then you can enjoy the experience and interacting with the crowd. Whether that song is a well known cover, a bit out there, or even an original (if you do them) is up to you! 😊 Good luck! (You’ll love it!) 🎸

One issue I have never heard addressed is how many (most?) hosts only let their friends perform, and exclude anyone else they don't already know. On the one occasion I expressed displeasure with this, I was told I was "difficult to work with" and immediately banned from the venue. What's going on?

Oof, I’m sorry, that sucks! In cases where that happens, that is a bad open mic host, and it isn’t really in their interest - if the same people (just their mates) turn up each week, it will soon cease to be popular after either the friends get bored of going, or the audience get bored of the same acts! A good open mic host should welcome anyone, regardless of experience, or if they know them. I am also a big believer of watching others before/after you play, it’s good manners and people aren’t there to see you specifically - saying this as the ‘friends’ that you mention can sometimes rock up at the end of the night and want to play while everyone else has waited. First come first served makes sense. Some places require you to sign up online or by messaging the person first - so you could occasionally do this to be sure you’ll have a spot, otherwise seek out the friendly hosts and avoid the others!! (and if there aren’t a lot of friendly hosts, you could become one! 😊) good luck!!
