Mariah is the most successful female recording artist ever and this was a decent performance, definitely not in her prime...but we must absolutely respect what she has been able to accomplish. HOWEVER, Gabriel took the game, set and match on his cover. PERIODT.

MARIAH gave life to this song originally recorded by the band FOREIGNER… this song was very successful in Brazil, was the theme of a soap opera and was much more successful than the original version… You have to see MARIAH CAREY LIVE at OPRAH, in a special presentation, in Central Park, singing this song: Gabriel was based a lot on her performance, but MARIAH's whistle at the end is unbelievable, and it's even longer...so much that it leaves EVERYONE awestruck!!! 😉

I love both versions, but they are both doing covers of the JOURNEY song from 1984. That's when I first fell in love with the song. I was 31and getting over a divorce (my choice).

I think Gabriel had the stronger performance here, and as you said, he was just singing alone in an empty room !! Mariah was too breathy in the earlier part of the song, where Gabriels voice came across as fuller, and with some more interesting twists to this classic song. His whistles were just a bit better than her`s too, incredible for a guy. Mariah gets a 9 here to Gabriels 10.
