You know i think i know where you are coming from dude. Deftones My Own Summer has one of my favorite snare sounds ever! The only problem is that cranked snares dont have a lot of oomph in the mix, and to our ears tuning them lower makes stuff sound bigger which is why over the years i have ditched the cranked snare sound for a lower tuned brass snare which just fills the mix, but once again it is just personal preference haha!
@theartofshred the intonation on the guitar actually has nothing to do with it, and the guitar was/is intonated pretty well if anything, i was just using the floating bridge to do that.
At the moment they use this as their intro for their live shows. Hopefully they'll include it on the album! This just might be the best album i'm ever going to buy.
@skiesxfallxdown He improvises based off of the accents. Some of the fills will stay the same or have similar feels, but he has a lot more fun improvising and changing things up and it keeps things way more fresh for us. Even the album was basically just us comping our favorite takes of each section cuz that was improvised around the accents, albeit a bit more conservatively than he likes to play live.
@SethDeng yea but he was also so sick back then. He hit harder and was more active. Now he shows more restraint which is cool but I still think his most impressive playing is the first 2 albums easily
when i record at my place, none, im just going direct from axefx to interface. in the video we were hooked up to the trident console, but no external pres, just the trident channels, we werent recording though...
dude, its all about brass snares for us, ocdp is ok but not really the sound that we like, second i personally believe that a camera mix of the monitors isnt the best way to judge the drum tone, especially when its not even in a full mix haha.
@tamatology No, he is using the JP Signature 7String on that video, this guit has a partly floating trem. So when he plays the open 7th String, and he bends the 6th string, the force applied from the 6th string on the trem grows, wich induces the trem to float up, reducing the pitch of the open 7th String. Cheers, Luke.
I have watched this vid like 15 times by now and i cant stop. Drums sound is super tight and heavy, and same with that tone. That ENGLsseem to really keep things tight and focused. Love the tone
@Periphery dude.. i learned this groove by ear and actually figured out the drop using my floyd just like that haha its become a new tool in my bag of tricks a really.. awesome one
When it shows Misha playing at 0:53 what's he doing with that bend? It looks to me like he's doing that staccato type effect on the 4th or 5th fret or something and then going a fret lower and bending that fret so that it sounds a little lower than one semitone above. Am I correct?
@meatballsub666 since its floating, it stays in tune based on the string tension vs spring tension in the back. When you bend a string a large amount, it releases tension for ALL of the strings, thus giving you that "diving" sound.
@chicken6111 that riff contains of "two" notes.. The second note (the one being bended) is lower than the first note, so even if he bends it, it's still lower than the first note.
I just did some research and you're correct, haha. He's using an EBMM 7 String which all have floating tremolos which would allow him to do this. Thanks!
I'll try to make this as clear as possible; the guitar he is using has a floating tremolo. On floating trem guitar, when you bend a string the trem will dip. He is basically bending a string the isn't being played in order to cause the trem to dip. Which in turn causes the pitch to drop.
@0DaveC I see.. but I assume it wouldn't work on all guitars.. as i'm mainly a blues guitarist, I have never heard of that little technique. So thanks for clearing this up!
My brain just exploded! i REALLY hope that the version of New Groove on the EP will be this longer version! Seems like an old video though, so i doubt it will be :(
@killadroid2 Yeah :) When he pulls the A string, that bent string pulls the bridge toward the neck. If you were to do this with a tremolo bar, it would do the same thing
Just checked you out after watching a Gene Hoglan interview where he praised the band (and drummer). Class stuff, Matt is seriously talented as is the whole band. Goodluck with everything guys. Slainte, Dan from Ireland.
I'm confused. Someone explain how the note dips when the string is bent. I know I'm not crazy, that usally raises the pitch of a note. I mean the part at around 0:52
@Periphery I'm not trying to make myself seem like Matt when I say this but that's also the way me and my band like to do things. It makes recording songs alot easier and playing them more fun! Keep rockin' it guys!
I don't understand...When he bends the strings at 0:56. The pitch gets lower? I'd like to do that...But it doesn't work for me. Is it a 7 string thing?
What you are hearing came from a camcorder that has a small mic that was picking up studio monitors that were putting out sound from other rooms. A reproduction of a reproduction that has been compressed and then compressed again for streaming. That is why it "sounds a bit cardboard-boxy and flat."
@MineSweepingKent he has a floyd rose trem, which is floating. he plays an open note and he pulls another note, making the lowest(played) note drop in pitch.
@KillswitchEngage42 A thousand to maybe a little over that is my price range. Schecter guitars are beautiful, the only thing that's held me back from them is the width...The bodies and neck seem wide from looking at them. Do they feel that way while you play?
The beginnings of the V-neck haha
I JUST realized that that's Elliot Coleman in there too lol...
Why was the rest of this not included in the final cut of New Groove????
Hey, I just uploaded a drum cover to this song, feel free to listen.. Will get you moshing
ua-cam.com/video/EM6G32N_hZc/v-deo.html
They should have released the full version of this instead of cutting it off after less than 2 minutes.
agree
Thanks Algorithm, for the introduction of Matt halpern's O-Face style of drumming
man, i know the music of this guys for like 1 month and i cant stay 1 day without hearing it. How not to love this guys. Mischa is a genius
@theartofshred the intonation on the guitar actually has nothing to do with it, and the guitar was/is intonated pretty well if anything, i was just using the floating bridge to do that.
Is that Javier Reyes at 0:15?
it does look like him...
Im pretty sure that is him. He tried out for periphery once upon a time.
It sorta looks like him, but the lower mouth area kinda makes me sketchy.
Peter Haight Yes that’s him
At the moment they use this as their intro for their live shows.
Hopefully they'll include it on the album!
This just might be the best album i'm ever going to buy.
Javier!

I'd love to hear this turned into something. Periphery cannot get old. Literally, the next best thing in my musical journey.
Tfw it WAS turned into something
@@RoyaltonDrummer922 i was just gonna say that! the full track sounds so clean
damn if only all drummers had that much fun grooving
This drummer is definitely bringing a lot to the band...I was not sure what would happen after Travis left...sounds really good though! I am stoked.
Oh he’s definitely brought a lot to the band alright
Honestly Matt was quite stiff playing this. But now he is GOD.
He sure brought alot
Lmao
@SethDeng yea but he was also so sick back then. He hit harder and was more active. Now he shows more restraint which is cool but I still think his most impressive playing is the first 2 albums easily
i still come back to this, when periphery was a young prodigy of a band
This and the totla mad jams sound so much sicker than the final versions. I really like the "live" sound of the jam, and especially real drum sounds.
when i record at my place, none, im just going direct from axefx to interface.
in the video we were hooked up to the trident console, but no external pres, just the trident channels, we werent recording though...
I love how he grooves and rocks it while recording and everything. He totally gets into it. It makes me happy. :D
hey, its not JUST a new groove, its THE new groove, the song new groove. i just now realized this
I'm surprised those headphones stay on his head xD
Misha has some fun with the FR at 0:50.
thats actually not a tremolo. first the JP sig doesnt use a floyd. second hes just bending the string above it to pull tension off the bottom string.
i wonder why they decided to cut the studio version short...
Love his improv fills, Matt is a genius.
I am actually in love with Taylor's drum sounds, these and the ones he gets with Travis Orbin's session work are amazing!
AMAZING OMG THAT DRUMMER RULES!!!!!
A friend of mine introduced me to this band a few days ago and you wouldn't imagine how much it BLOWS MY MIND HOLY SHIT.
I love how happy Matt always looks when he's drumming. He truly loves what he does
I could watch this all day.
0:15 that better be Javier Reyes of AAL
@thunder that and the 3 riffs at the end...and the bit at the start... and the bits in between... FUCK theyre insane!!!
dude, its all about brass snares for us, ocdp is ok but not really the sound that we like, second i personally believe that a camera mix of the monitors isnt the best way to judge the drum tone, especially when its not even in a full mix haha.
what is bulb doing to make the low string go flat?
Mike TC Floyd Rose + super bend on a different string
this drummer is now in my top 10 fav drummers great shit!!!!
@tamatology
No, he is using the JP Signature 7String on that video, this guit has a partly floating trem.
So when he plays the open 7th String, and he bends the 6th string, the force applied from the 6th string on the trem grows, wich induces the trem to float up, reducing the pitch of the open 7th String.
Cheers, Luke.
Possibly over a year since the last time I watched this video and I just realized 0:21 is Elliot.
Crunchy!! Now with new and improved djentty goodness!!
Sick! I really dig this.. Periphery is unbelievable.
Holy crap... Matt is a machine!
oh, i remember u sayingthat b4.
so is this drop Ab? i recently have been rockin that tuning for a bit, pretty fun stuff. what string brand/size u use?
I have watched this vid like 15 times by now and i cant stop.
Drums sound is super tight and heavy, and same with that tone. That ENGLsseem to really keep things tight and focused. Love the tone
i seriously love this groove so much! awesome stuff
please please please please post more.... you made me eargasm!!!!!!!
@Periphery
dude.. i learned this groove by ear and actually figured out the drop using my floyd just like that haha
its become a new tool in my bag of tricks a really.. awesome one
@killadroid2 Yeah i would, just make sure its an actual floating bridge, because the new ZR trems are designed to counteract the floating aspect.
I love Bulb, and all of you guys. You have such a unique sense of humor, that similar to my own. For example, the faces "Bulb" makes at 55:00
That's an awesome technique at :53! Hitting the bottom note and bending strings that aren't played to drop the pitch.. So cool.
are you using just your baritone 6 string there? whats the lowest note you play in this song? sounds like a phat low 8 string.
When it shows Misha playing at 0:53 what's he doing with that bend? It looks to me like he's doing that staccato type effect on the 4th or 5th fret or something and then going a fret lower and bending that fret so that it sounds a little lower than one semitone above. Am I correct?
@StylishStar88 its a bass pod
@meatballsub666 since its floating, it stays in tune based on the string tension vs spring tension in the back. When you bend a string a large amount, it releases tension for ALL of the strings, thus giving you that "diving" sound.
jesus soooooooo locked in!!! love you guys...
amazing sound
THESE GUYS ROCKED TONIGHT @ BOTTOM LOUNGE CHICAGO
@Periphery Would you recommend one with a fixed bridge or should I look at another model/brand?
@chicken6111 that riff contains of "two" notes.. The second note (the one being bended) is lower than the first note, so even if he bends it, it's still lower than the first note.
@theartofshred the groove is sooooo badass!!! best djent groove and drums ever
I just did some research and you're correct, haha.
He's using an EBMM 7 String which all have floating tremolos which would allow him to do this.
Thanks!
@Periphery Wow! A reply from Periphery! :)
So you would recommend an Ibanez RG then? I love the Wizard II neck, and I really want a floating bridge.
@killadroid2 Because that way when you break a string or change tunings your entire guitar doesnt go out of tune/take forever to change tunings on.
wonderful! need this on the album! XD
So happy they recorded at this place for the new album, sounds awesome
I'll try to make this as clear as possible; the guitar he is using has a floating tremolo. On floating trem guitar, when you bend a string the trem will dip. He is basically bending a string the isn't being played in order to cause the trem to dip. Which in turn causes the pitch to drop.
I fucking love this band
what gauge of strings are you using to be downtuned that low on a floating bridge?
@0DaveC I see.. but I assume it wouldn't work on all guitars.. as i'm mainly a blues guitarist, I have never heard of that little technique. So thanks for clearing this up!
Bulb, did you ever record this and upload it on your Soundclick account? Cause i love it and want to download it so bad!
Is that a POD xt lying on top of the Marshall cab at 0:50? Inspite of having stuff like ENGL, Mesa and Marshall cabs? Lol!
1:05 GREAT D0UBLE BASS roll.
Man I love these kind of drummers. Energy !! P0WER !! Love it.
@theartofshred yes, im using the floating bridge to do that
Javier!!! WITH THE SHADES!!
My brain just exploded! i REALLY hope that the version of New Groove on the EP will be this longer version! Seems like an old video though, so i doubt it will be :(
I watch this video more than any other on the UA-cam.
Best groove of periphery !
and it's a show intro =D
DUDE I LOVEEEE THIS SHIT!!! do you know where i can get this song?
Djent all over the place! Love it!! great band, they are awesome
He did? Thats awesome
snare sounds awesome, did he ttuned it like that, or its the mixing?
if he did how did he tune it?
bro why did they not release the full version of this? its so fucking cool
I'm confused. Someone explain how the note dips when the string is bent. I know I'm not crazy, that usally raises the pitch of a note. I mean the part at around 0:52
blows my pants off every time
What's this music genre called? What other bands play it? I wanna hear more of this, so awesome!
@Periphery I'm not trying to make myself seem like Matt when I say this but that's also the way me and my band like to do things. It makes recording songs alot easier and playing them more fun! Keep rockin' it guys!
Hey dudes :D I waint a Tour in South America :D In Brazil :DDD
Curitiba City !!!!!!!!! :D
Good luck in new drummer :D
I don't understand...When he bends the strings at 0:56. The pitch gets lower? I'd like to do that...But it doesn't work for me. Is it a 7 string thing?
@0DaveC okay, so he's picking only one string the whole riff, and just using the other string to dive the note right?
HOLY FUCK, the last half of this is awesome, I wish it was on the EP version of this track...
it slightly relieves tension on the neck, making the low A string go slightly flat, if you listen carefully you can hear it.
@StylishStar88 That's not Elliot Coleman. That guy works at Guitar Center in Rockville, MD. I know because I just saw him there.
That was sick !!!
where can i find this version? the other one is cut short
What you are hearing came from a camcorder that has a small mic that was picking up studio monitors that were putting out sound from other rooms. A reproduction of a reproduction that has been compressed and then compressed again for streaming. That is why it "sounds a bit cardboard-boxy and flat."
@SupernothingTK Hell yea i could listen to that on repeat
@MineSweepingKent he has a floyd rose trem, which is floating. he plays an open note and he pulls another note, making the lowest(played) note drop in pitch.
The song is called New Groove and you can download it from Bulb's soundclick website :)
I like a drummer that lives his music, makes faces and enjoy his schnitz. Great song, great musicians, fun to watch.
sounds tight misha, badass drummer you have!
@KillswitchEngage42 A thousand to maybe a little over that is my price range. Schecter guitars are beautiful, the only thing that's held me back from them is the width...The bodies and neck seem wide from looking at them. Do they feel that way while you play?
one of your best grooves guys! Need it in the album! ^^
great drummer! i mean.. wow.
what head on the kick (batter side)?
