  • Hi everybody this time we look at the classic Alesis HR16 drum machine.
    Here is some info
One of Alesis's first drum machines. With 49 sounds including 10 kicks, 7 snares and a complete ethnic set all of which are 16 bit samples this drum machine is a great bargain! Its partner in crime is the MMT-8 sequencer. But the HR-16 has its own sequencer with 100 patterns and 100 songs available. The drum tones can be tuned, have individual level controls for mixing, and there is 16 voice polyphony which means up to 16 drum tones can be used within a pattern. Patterns are programmed in either step or real-time. With external click inputs and Midi, the HR-16 is capable of integrating your older drum machines or sequencers with Midi systems!
The updated HR-16B model had lots of new sounds cool for enough techno and electronic music. And it still costs about the same price. It is possible that some HR-16's may have been modified to use the HR-16B's ROM chip to get those sounds. The HR-16 is gray and the HR-16B is black. Either one makes a handy little drum machine that's so cheap these days that it is more than worth adding to your studio - it just might come in handy one day. It is used by Orbital, The Grid, Autechre, Sub Dub and the Stereo MC's.

Definitely one of my favorite drum machines. It has a sound I can identify almost immediately when I hear it. They Might Be Giants and East River Pipe both used it extensively early in their careers, and I've heard it in demos from groups ranging from Tindersticks to Go-Betweens. The most popular songs I've heard that use the HR-16 are Bruce Springsteen - "Streets of Philadelphia" and Arrested Development - "Mr. Wendell".

THe Church used it extensively on 1990's Gold Afternoon Fix, although they hated it! I have one and I love it.

I once had a very quick go on the HR-16 but I do not remember it sounding as good as yours in the video. I would definitely buy one now though. Another good one is the Zoom RT-234 which is a drum machine that had lovely pads and very intuitive to play and use. Shame it lacked a MIDI OUT but other than that it was one of the best I ever used or owned. When Zoom finally released one with full MIDI etc the RT-323, a friend got one and I tried it and.............. oh dear! What a horrible drum machine in every single way. I ended up getting a Yamaha RY30 and added an RM50 rack module, and those are the business!

Also a tip for anyone that ever has the pads go bad on the HR-16 or the MMT8, you can bring them back to life by using a pencil. basically you want a soft graphite pencil like a 5B which will have a softer lead, then just gently draw on the both sides of the connectors i.e the rubbery part of the pad and the actual traces. I made the mistake of superglueing tin foil to the rubber pads which worked great for a few months only.

How about those pens with solder in that you can buy, which are used for repairing damaged circuit board traces.

@@EgoShredder Yeah I'd say those would be a more permanent fix. The coating does wear a lot on the rubber pads and it leaves a powder residue over the traces below which need well cleaned 1st too.
