- The Legendary Voice of UB40 -
Flying High - Album Release June 29th 2009
Out From Under - Single Release June 29th 2009
Following the worldwide success of 2007s Running Free, June sees the release of Ali Campbells much anticipated third solo album Flying High, his first to be recorded since splitting from UB40. Ali has one of the UKs most distinctive and recognisable voices and as lead singer with the world-renowned group UB40, he has sold over 70 million records worldwide, toured across the globe, notched up four number No. 1 world-wide singles, over forty Top 40 UK singles, released 24 studio albums and received an Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement.
Recorded in Londons legendary Sarm Studios Flying High is an exquisitely arranged and produced infectious reggae-pop record, made up of a mixture of original material and interesting covers, thoroughly exploring all genres of reggae music, with a release date that makes it a potential soundtrack to the summer.
An Ali Campbell record wouldnt be an Ali Campbell record without exciting collaborations, superbly written original material and some well chosen, transformed covers and Flying High wont disappoint. Ali restructures and shapes old pop classics with his inventive, artistic vision that only he could convincingly execute and the record includes appearances from an exciting cast of international artists including Craig David, Sway, Jamaicas Lady Saw and Shaggy, Germanys Gentleman and South Africas Danny K & The Soweto Gospel Choir.
Speaking about recording the song Everways with Craig David, Ali recalled: It was a joy working with Craig, he is totally professional and has done a great job on the track. He is one of the UK's best R n B talents and a lovely guy. Similarly Craig enjoyed the experience saying It was great working with Ali, the man is a legend and a consummate professional. Everways captures everything that weve all come to love about his writing. I look forward to working with him again in the future.
A song written by Ali and Gentleman for the album is Its A Crime on which British rapper Sway collaborates: Sway is one of Britain's finest. His rap on the track is so good, I was blown away with his lyric and phrasing he is a big talent praised Ali. Coming from a family of UB40 fans Sway was thrilled to be working with Ali: "It was a great honour working with Ali, I'm a big fan of UB40 and so are my parents, my mum couldn't believe it. The fact that someone of that stature would even consider or acknowledge talent from a younger generation to be worthy of appearing on his album is amazing."
Soaring melodies and reggae rhythms glide and bounce along throughout the album with themes that include conspiracy theories, politics and love. The moving rendition of Britney Spears Out From Under highlights Campbells world class vocal ability - the first single to be taken from the new album, this beautiful ballad evokes strong emotions and lyrically may help to shed some light on his departure from UB40. Shes A Lady, a cover of Tom Jones Seventies smash, sees a pair-up with dancehall superstar Shaggy, whose raspy Jamaican rhymes entwine with Campbells huge soulful vocals so fluently and with such kick that youre left wondering why the two havent collaborated before.
True reggae lovers will be excited to learn that there is a cover of John Holts 1970 lost dub classic My Heart Is Gone. The haunting original track Nothing Ever Changes (Pierrot) sees the pairing of German reggae star Gentleman with Ali and leaves its mark on the listener with its thought provoking lyric, whilst Visions, another Campbell penned track, sees Danny K and the Soweto Gospel choir join Ali on what is an anthemic and uplifting look at South Africas future.
From his days in UB40 to his time pursuing his successful solo career, Ali has always stayed true to his love of reggae and its ongoing capacity for innovation, experimentation and pure enjoyment. Flying High is testament to his continuing desire to create and deliver innovative reggae and dub to the world in the shape of an album that, young or old, reggae enthusiast, or not, you definitely wont want to miss.

may he R.I.P.
I'm tires of the "Thumbs up if you're watching this in 2011"... when it comes to UB40, it really doesn't matter what year you listen to it in, IT'S ALWAYS GOOD!
Que emoción que te canten de la manera en la que El hace! Eso es hermoso!
i'm a huge ub40 fan and a fan of reggae but i had no idea how old some of their songs are. 1984???? wow!! i wasn't even born yet.
I am so gonna make sure I have the UB40 albums and songs when my kids grow up. :) make it a family tradition!!!!!
@kevinnunez9 Saludos paisano, cierto lo que opinas al respecto.
que divinura de cancion Dios mio los amo son lo mejor
My mum used to kill this album whilst cleaning and now its rubbed off onto me. They are a great band. Anyone who doesnt like these get drunk with a bunch of friends and listen to their songs youll have a great laugh.
reminds me of my dad, and bbq's round his friends houses, always a great night, and always a funny earthy smell coming out the back yard when us young-uns went to bed
No lie... before I get on my boat at my cabin, i need a cooler of drinks, smokes and cherry oh baby. Once im cruisin, all is perfect
lo maximo ub40 marcaron una etapa en mi vida
53 people were the product of the 90's and wouldn't know good music if it bit them in the arse .....
I was 6 years old when I started dancing to this, still going at 33 ;)
I miss Ali been in UB40, but they are far from dead without him.
I love this song, a lot.. absolutely easy strain! with I got You Baby it's my favorite song from UB40.
Never hear a band do these harmonies now. not without autotune "helping" them out...
Love this song.
What a nice video ,please beam me back 2 the 80s!!!, sorry love and kids!!,yea but the80s cool.
UB40 was the number of the form to fill in when unemployed
@4kimani Hahaha no he didnt grow up in Jamaica,he grew up in Birmingham!!
En mi adolescencia escuché rregue de Jamaica y a está banda ví los videosclis cuando en mi país argentina empezó a mirar canales de cable en la tv. 👏👍🎵🎼🎶🎺
So not true! Maybe you don't know their music. For starters you should try their original hits: Food For Thought, King, Little By Little, Sardonicus, One In Ten, Don't Slow Down, The Key, Forget The Cost, Folitician, D.U.B., Riddle Me, I'm Not Fooled So Easily, If It Happens Again, Sing Our Own Song...There is a lot more, of course.
Whats his name looks like cook from skins. They're very cheeky.
I'm a black from New Jersey but formally from Kisumu Kenya. I grew up listening to reggae and I've never divided musicians into their skin colors. If the song is great it is great, it doesn't matter if a white or black sang it.
composed by Eric Donaldson. Great !
i'm sorry to hear abt ur mum. its funny how the same song can mean so many different things 2 so many different ppl! weneva i hear ub40 it reminds me of my brother's wedding in jamaica! ub40 r highly respected out there, which is funny coz u read all over the place tht jamaicans dnt class ub40 as "real" reggae!
me and my mum went and saw ub40 on the 21/12/07 - the last gig of the year -in birmingham! :) 20 years after u saw them at the end of their world tour! pretty cool, eh?
i grew up listen to this with my family especially during the holidays bring on the red and fam
ily
me encanta el reggae me encanta este tema me encanta la musica de ub40 ali campbell y robin ca,pbell son fuertes
@fsx767 So true ! I listen a lot to disco and pop music from end 70's and the 80's. At that time I was young so this music has a lot of memories for me. So its great to listen even in 2011 !! I also listen to music nowadays but this too;) Its great there is so much nice music :)
@elmo4486 Hi Elmo4486, yes it was shot in Birmingham (South.) The 2 guys who are robbing Ali Campbell are also members of the band, they are Brian Travers & Norman Hasan.
The band made a short film called "Labour of Love 1" & part of the story is Ali trying to pull the lady he is singing to, it is really worth watching the short film as it is quite funny & it includes a very funny Scottish family watching the short film.
if it wasnt 4 ub40 covering the jamaican singers they would all be broke they only got paid $10 to record the records in them days and had no rights to the royalties after lord creator said he was able to buy his house because ub40 covered kingston town and most of the reggae from the 60s-70s were covers of old american blues songs
jordan you are right, the colour of the artist is secondary to the music i am a "white boy",grew up in the caribbean with music from the islands......reggae,ska,steeldrums etcetc
but this time the colour of the man and his voice are a enigma.
he's gotta be the only "white singer" with a "black" voice.
greetings from holland
UB40 is a band from england that has a mixture of black and white people in it so it not a case of where or what race or ethnic minority anymore if someone is racist thats up to them but let me say this if they are racist they will feel the punishment for that in years to come "oh and by the way i am white and i have alot of coloured friends"
I don't know. UB40 seems to have done way too many covers of reggae music and not produced much of their own hits. Yes he sings well etc, but even Red Red Wine was a cover of an already good song. Doesn't feel right to me. Can't respect that from a musician.
Awesome song, great video as well.
That said, she pretty much steals the show, no? I hope that wasn't just terrific acting.
Sure looked a helluva a lot like the real thing to me. Unnforgettable, smile, eyes, style and attitude. I doubt he even NEEDED to act... I'd be smitten in an instant.
@ztullis1 Yes, UB40 is a white British reggae band. They do a lot of covers from all genres. This song was originally done by ERIC DONALDSON, a BLACK JAMAICAN, in 1971. It was outstandingly popular, even before it was coverred by The Rolling Stones in '76 and UB40 in the 80s.
@inspectae- I thought that UB40 is a white band but feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, and it also sounds like to me that you are a racist there could never be TOO much of anything "in a black music video". I always knew that racism existed and you just proved it.
wtf? who said white cant sing reggae? im not black nor white, hispanic to be exact and cmon we all got the same potential we all humans. Bob Marley said once that he is not in the black man's side nor in the white man's side but in God's side. and btw this song is so greatt!
Give Eric Donaldson his due credit. He only pulls in the most 30,000 views when he was the original singer with a better version. I can only summise that it is because he is black. I love ub40, but tell me a song they have not fucking copied to call their own. I hate this freaking unfair world.
It was kind of a storyline. They released a vid with the whoel story on, all teh songs in the album incorporated. They get together, she gets off with Robin, he and Robin have a fight, etc, then Ali and curly girly get it together in the end. Sorry to spoil the ending hehehe
errr...i'm pretty sure bob marley got a bit of songs from these guys like "red red wine" one of his most famous hits. so in most cases it would be the other way around: if these guys didn't exist, bob marley wouldn't have been that famous. don't get me wrong, i'm a huge marley fan.
hey all of you, can anybody tell me what this intro-talk is called in reggae-music, i´m desperately looking for a song, but i can only humming it for my self and some words here and there. I want to google on these words and this intro-rapping or intro-scat or what you say it says.
Hooked on this now because of a character I've met recently, that I'll never forget....
@jaxbund There appears to be only one girl in the club because their is a fault in your perception, watch the video again and you will see more than one girl.
No way was this 1984 try 1980 the girl in white was called Bennie and she was the keyboard player Michael Virtues G/F at the time she was an actress as well...made in in the backstreet's of Birmingham the pub was the Eagle and Tun..........
although it's a great song sang by ub40, in reality this is one of ERIC DONALDSON's best songs which was stolen by ub40 who couldn't come out with some decent lyrics and music of their own. Donaldson's version is much more beautiful than this
Lol , If every song ub40 coverd wasen't as good as the orginals why did every cover song they done sell more than the originals? your opinion clearly isn't agree'd with , as millions and millions have bought there labour of love cd's
It was not a nasty comment kazzer, there was nothin nasty in my comment, I was just pointin out how shit this is compared to the original record, you have Britney Spears on your favourites so how could you possibly have an opinion??
UB40 was a Unemployment Benifit 40, form that you had to fill in back then when you registered as unemployed I heard a old urban legend they all met in the dole office but that was from my older brother not too sure about the facts
most of there tracks are remakes of old skool reggae used to listen to the originals with my grand parent and fam as a kid. love ub40 though wicked vibe with all there songs . they made reggae more commercial for white england. love reggae!!
i read someone say ub40 only only did good cause bob marley died but ong no way ub40 r the best noone can replace bob (rip) but these brummy dude from my home town you cant say they didnt ern there fame ther e the best xxx you gotta lov um xxx
they have another song called "i got to find sweet sherry ,she is let me all alone,i gotta find sweet shery she is gona away from home,,sherry y,,,,dont go and leave me alone...anybody knows that songs..pls reply me,,i miss it.thnks
@borsh2002 they split up well ali left becoz of complications but unfortunatly they are no more as a whole but if u were lucky like some of us we can say right now that these guys rockd the fukn stage all night
@worldsopenedup well simple answer, UB 40 sell more records coz they have more expoture then the original artists.. In other words more famous ;)
But they are great as is the original Eric Donaldsons version..
I LOVE UB40!!! THE BEST RAGGAE GROUP EVER!
COME BACK, UB40!!!
AND mo1ses, FUCK YOU IF YOU RATHER HAVE THE ROLLING ROCKS VERSION!
@assilookde The video was shot in the early Eighties, Beyonce was not even born then (I dont think) All the Actors you see in the video are all family & friends from Birmingham.
how is that possible when it was written in 1972... Unless you're saying Eric Donaldson did the original
in which case I miss understood
he grew up in jamaica..thats why he has the accent..........................i dont think theres many white people who can try to pull off the jamaican accent this good......
From the propper VIDEOS...YAY..I sold my 3 vedeo collection to a back street dealer back in the 80's. I got £20 pound for them. Which was a lotta weed in them days...X
The Rolling Stones covered it also in the mid 70's...Black & Blue album...And sorry but their version was better than this...even I'm not a great stones fan...
Thats rigth always i was thought that talent gay was black, pls don't be offended with my comment, i really know about those great talent, salutes
it would be mate bar UB40 are all blues fans and the vid was made just by St Andrews...If you want reflected glory follow that knob who plays the violin..
@MOONST0MP I agree with you. Though I don't hate UB40, I do think they are a pretty good cover band. I think the originals are always better.
@hori2dcore Thanks for your advice mate but i think i will do just as i fuckin please and put my thoughts down when ever the fuck i choose to.
its as if da lead singer lovz black pple..com on it was in the 60's and hez hanging aroung black pple in almost all his song!!mad lov...ub40..yeh
I have tickets to see them in Dallas, Texas in August--can't wait...I would expect that they will be as good as ever...so many great great songs
They (stars) would look so good however people on coke think that they are smart but they look LOONY,,,, see loony tunes..hahahahahaaha
@kiltedknight666 hey man i'm from the 90s & i love good music. it just that some people from the 90s were never exposed to good music.

bring back soo many childhood memories && summers at da beach back home in HAWAII!! man oh man how i wish i was still home :(
If ub40 suck so much , how comes they've outsold all orignal copies they've redone and sold over 100 million albums worldwide?
im not sure. but she was in the video to red red wine too. so there must hav been sum connection going on! :)
You know how pictures of yourself as a kid are usually really embarassing? I bet the kid at 0:17 is really pround of this!

@MOONST0MP buddy when you start selling records abd then having solded out concerts then come and put your thoughts down
@loverlymee I see this SAME comment on every video I watch. So old. No originality. This song is so groovy.
some kinda gov form that was being handed out at the time the band was created...? i read something like that online.
