- Here is my tutorial for the acoustic version of Time is Dancing by Ben Howard. I have done a cover of this song during which I improvised a solo introduction; this is included in the tutorial. I have also focused on my pedalboard and amp towards the end of the video, to explain how I get the ethereal gritty sound. The guitar I am playing is my very lovely BSG D27F.
As usual, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE. I reply to all comments. Thanks for watching :)
This tutorial is based around the acoustic performance that Ben did on 1LIVE here:

One of the best tutorials I've ever seen!
Amazing tutorial. This one is a lot of fun, thanks a lot Pete. You have taught me so much over the last few years, I never thought I could reach this level on guitar. Hope you are well and some uploads are coming soon!
Thanks mate, I'm up to my eyeballs in day job work so no imminent uploads but I'll get back to it when time permits 👍🏻
Respect! If I can even play the guitar as half as well as you one day, I'll be proud. :) Amazing tutorial. Thank you.
Glad you liked it. Makes my efforts worthwhile :)
Cheers Pete. That section around the 11-minute mark was gold dust for me. Been trying to get that right-hand picking rudiment worked out for ages. Top man. Thanks. J
appreciate your hard work on demystifying this song
12:54 is such a beautiful chord.
maaan thank u so much for every single tutorial! words can not fathom what u do for us...
Thanks, to be honest I probably enjoy making the tutorials as much as you enjoy learning from them:)
Ahh here it is! Thanks for this man, glad you put the intro in.
Cheers Tayler. Adding little intros and variation is a step towards writing my own stuff :)
Yea definitely. How did you get on with the song you made for the open mic? also I'm curious about this slap and go version of esmerelda you were talking about. It's a shame your whole life can't revolve around teaching me ben Howard songs really hahaa.
Tayler Ralph Slap and go? Slap? How very dare you! Haha. The open mic was postponed, but I finished the song :) I might record it for my more discerning viewers. My daughters like it.
My to do list includes covers and tutorials for Small Things, the PICK and go version of Esmeralda and a song called Ribbon by Billie Marten. Then I really need to put some effort into my own material.
Hahaaaa PICK my bad! Sweet, that's a decent line up look forward to it.
As ThePlugga44 already said, the pedal walkthrough is much appreciated! Thanks! The end result sounds pretty close to the actual thing :-)
Cheers! The pedals will be back for Small Things...

Thanks alot Pete for your tutorials, you are great and your lessons are very clear to follow along with. keep up the good work friend. I need to start a pedal collection off after watching this one 👍.
+Nathan King an expensive but satisfying collecting hobby. On the plus side, decent pedals hold their value. I'd start with a delay pedal if I was going from scratch :)
Bantham Legend I'm just waiting for my payday to come along and I'll be making a start on a collection ☺ thanks man I'll try that one first then see where I go from there. with plenty of practice in the mean time of course ✌
Another great tutorial bigchap ! Keep them coming 🤘🏽
Another quality video, keep up the good work Pete you are up there with the best of them, just need more exposure. This and Small Things has created an array of pedals on the bedroom floor for the long haired general to roll her eyes at.
+Richard Marlow haha, I'm recording a Conrad tutorial tomorrow, assuming shewhomustbeobeyed doesn't have other plans...
This is awesome. I've wanted to play this song for soooo long and now I finally can! My all time favourite :). If you have the time, could you also tab the Glastonbury version of this?
Thanks, but there's too many good new songs to work out to be going back :)
its the same thing just tune up one full step

Thank you 🤙🏻
Another great one man. Nice work, really appreciate it!
James Martin Cheers mate. I'm trying to balance my videos in terms of tutorials and covers, but never enough time for as many of either as I would like.
Thanks a lot for a quality video! Really great work :)
Martin Grønning Thanks! Hoping to tick off Small Things this week too.
Look forward to learning this one my friend
ThePlugga44 Something to keep you busy :)
Bantham Legend I've just ordered myself two cheap pedals to bide my time, a behringer em600 echo machine pedal and a behringer rv600 reverb machine pedal. I know they're not the best but it's a start and it'll give md a lot more to work with than just my amp effects. I reaaaally appreciate how you walk theough the settings on the effects at the end and I was wondering ifvyou could do the same for small things and end of the affair some daycas i love these two, especially small things and it really sucks knowing that i don't have that right sound when i play it Which is why i ordered the pedals. I wanna get that distinctive sound howard has.
ThePlugga44 Have fun with those pedals, my first pedal was a Behringer Compressor/sustainer. A lot of people knock them, but the only difference between them and the higher price equivalents is plastic vs metal cases. I will do a detailed effects breakdown on Small Things :)
Keep it going banta legend lovin it
Thank you for your amazing tutorials!!! I can finally half play this now! (I uploaded a lil snippet) ☺️
Well done, I'll have a lil listen :)
Great! Thankyou pete! :)
Kyle Cullen Cheers Kyle. Your voice is probably better suited to the bridge section of this song than mine!
Bantham Legend In that case! I think I'll make a cover ;) thanks again!
great lesson, Thanks!
Thanks Scott. I actually watched one of my own tutorials the other day, to remind myself how to play a song :)
Thanks for this, and the she treats me well tutorial, in fact i've been looking at a few of you tutorials so thanks for all of them, really appreciate you putting them up. SSo i take it your name refers to bantham, devon? Surf there a lot?
Thanks for watching. I surfed Bantham quite a lot in a past life (90s), along with Lanacombe, Challaborough and most of the North Coast. I still surf when I get the chance, usually on holidays, but sometimes I get a cheeky session at Cayton Bay ;)
Hi Pete, so if I want to have this kind of sound for my acoustic (also for The Burren and many other BH songs), you would advise to get a tube amp like your Bugera? So say a Roland AC33 with some pedals wouldn't quite do the job? I'm a bit worried about not having that acoustic sound on a tube amp, when I might want that sometimes. How is the natural, acoustic sound on a Bugera like yours? Thanks!
+Luc Verhoeven i think it depends if you want to sing. I can get a VERY convincing tube sound using my BSG through a joyo AC tone pedal into my Marshall AS50D. The benefit of the Marshall is two channels so i can sing and play guitar through it. Plus it has feedback control.
I bought the Bugera a few years ago and haven't looked at what's available now. If you go the valve route then less is more, unless you are playing gigs in a band. 10W through the tubes equals a lot more at the speaker. My Bugera is 11w to 22w switchable, but the speaker is rated 280W! It's very very loud.
+Luc Verhoeven the sound will also depend on your guitar, pickup and any preamp you may be using. Best thing is to try one out if you can. The V22 is sizeable and heavy. Depends what you want it for.
Awesome. Thanks a lot for this video. But in your video, where you just cover this song...there it sounds like that you kind of strum the sites in the verse. Instead of just doing this strike at the lower e, like you explain it here. I mean basically at the moment when you start singing and it gets more rythm. I don't mean strumming the whole time, but always when this beat comes it sounds that you hit 3 or 4 sites in a strum. Or am I hearing that wrong? :D
Around the time I learned this song I was also learning to do percussive thumb strikes which explains why the cover and tutorial differ. The strumming is from learning to play The Burren :)
+Bantham Legend a little late my response. But yes, I thought that and it's the same for me almost. A few months ago I started learning this slap + little strum technique too, with also this song. So I'm playing it the same way now. Always a decent strum with every slap. It's a great technique I find, cause you can do so much with it and also can vary with it as you want. :)
Can someone pls explain me what the X means on the tab.
Im new in playing guitar and i am still learning so dont pls say i asked something stupid just answer. thank you a lot great tutorial :D !!!!
Dusan Divic OK im idiot i looked online and it means to mute the string. Thank you dusan divic
sry for bothering with me
again great tuto :DDD
Dusan Divic Hi, thanks for watching. The X on the tab represents the percussive thumb slap on the strings. It appears on lots of my tutorials :)
Bantham Legend Great tutorial, where can i get a copy of the tabs?
My website, www.banthamlegend.com :). All for free.
how do you record your videos I wanna start making some cover. how do you do the video and all your audio at the same time and whats does decent equipment cost?
I think how you choose to record really depends on how much time you are prepared to spend on setting up prior to recording and similarly, how much editing you want to do. This will also dictate how much you end up spending. Some people get great results using a decent smartphone or iPad. My first video used a cheap digital camera that also recorded video, that I later edited using windows built in movie software. If you want decent audio then really the sound has to be recorded separately as the camera audio isn't great, unless its a high end camera. I use a HD camcorder that cost £140, but capture the sound with a £50 condenses mic, into a USB audio interface. I use Sonar DAW to process the audio, then mix the audio to the video in Sony Movie Maker. Any DAW software or video software will be fine if its just for recording vocal with acoustic guitar. I would estimate that including cables, stands etc I have spent around £500. Look at some of the USB audio interface packages that include software, mic and a cable (e.g. Scarlett 2i2, Presonus etc) as this combined with a digital camera may be all you need. Hope that helps.
Bantham Legend I want to do some electric stuff so how would you record from a valve amp much like yours. do you need a certain type of condenser mic?
For recording guitar through an amp, most people would use a dynamic mic on a stand, with the mic almost touching the grill. In the UK there is a shop called studiospares that I get my stuff from. Their own brand dynamic mics are about £25 and get great reviews. I can recommend a book that covers this and more; it's called "The Guerilla Guide to Home Recording". The book is aimed at recording on a budget and getting the best sound with what you have.
Bantham Legend Big problem? i picked up a roland duo capture ex audio interface and it came with sonar x1 le. my problem is i cant hear any audio. i press record and it records the audio i play, then when i play it back i can hear. my issue is that i want to hear it in my headphones as i'm recording it. any idea what is going on i have been fiddling with this program all day, i have searched many things on the internet but have no clue what is going on.
veermanification ok I found the problem I was having latency issues and I had to change the driver to ASIO. did you experience any latency issues yourself at first? i'm new to this and not very techy. I never thought it would be this complicated lol.
please cover ''the wolves'' by Ben Howard and make a tutorial
Music lover Its coming...
Great tutorial! Thanks so much! Any way to print the tab?
On my website, www.banthamlegend.com :) Let me know if you can't find it.
Great tutorial! Can you mail me the tabs?
Thanks! Hoping to put the tabs on my website (when I get one!) soon. The tabs are not in full song arrangement, more like a construction kit. Its on my to do list...
