  • @joescott6647
    @joescott6647 11 років тому +4

    Just in case you were wondering, the finger thing he does in the percussive section is called a resquedo, it's a flamenco/spanish technique, normally it's used for stumming (it gives a nice rolling sound) but you can use it percissivly as well :)
    peace out

    Thanks so much for sharing this tutorial. I thought it would take me so long to learn this, but because of how clearly and slowly you have explained it, I learnt it in around 2 hours, so I am chuffed to bits! Thanks again and have subscribed! :)

    This tutorial is really something!! You're great, thank you so much for this! I've been wanting to learn how to play this song for so many years and now when I finally have the guts to try it out (never played before) I'm getting somewhere thanks to you! It's really nice to have a video where you can learn easy and step by step! Maybe not the best song for a first lesson but after a few hours of rehearsing it actually sounds pretty damn good and now i can't stop playing it haha! Now I'm really excited to learn more about how to play guitar, just need to learn more about chords and tuning and basic stuff, do you have any tips on videos or apps for beginners like me?
    Again thank you so much for sharing this amazing video! Made my week!!

    • @Raven2702
      @Raven2702  8 років тому +3

      hey Natasha,
      thank you for this kind comment. I'm glad my tutorial did help you! When I started playing guitar I used Guitarpro and worked with tabs only. To learn basic stuff like chords you can almost check out any tutorial video here on UA-cam for the specific song u like to learn. A lot of acoustic songs contain chords. So its basically learning by doing :D
      And by the way you learn to play a lot of songs you like.
      When you progress to barre chords I recommend some songs of Jack Johnson such as Sitting Waiting Wishing.
      Respect for your courage to start learning guitar with Ben Howard songs... It's definitely not the easiest way :D
      Keep it up, good learning and happy playing :D

      Thats really good tips, thank you!
      Yeah I've noticed that when I try to learn a song that i strongly like i manage to be more patient with the process of learning and never want to stop trying to get better at it, the more it sound like the original song the more motivated and encouraged I get to continue practicing :D love ben howards songs so that's why i started with those haha
      But I'll start learning more simpler chords and stuff now, thank you again for helping!! :)

    Always wanted to learn a song with tapping and such and when I heard this on Every Kingdom I was determined to learn it one day! I stumbled across your video today and I've never played like this before but you have broken the whole thing down and made it seem so simple, I've just about got all of it! Struggling a bit with the second verse part where the hand switches back and fourth but i'm sure i'll get there soon :p Thanks so much for posting this, you are incredible!

    • @Raven2702
      @Raven2702  6 років тому

      U might have to retune a bit. Depending on how strong your capo holds on the strings. -> Too much force on the strings mean your tone gets a bit too high and vice versa. Hope that helps

    Finding out the tuning of a song is not easy when it's not standard tuning. It is very helpful to have a video where you can see the artist playing the song so you see a capo (if used) and the chords he plays. Then you have to look for moments when he plays a single string and adjust your string to the sound of his. It needs some practice and good ears... can be veeeery disappointing sometimes! In case of Ben Howard it's a bit easier, he's always playing around Open-C! :)

    How do you get so much sounds from those slaps? Does that depend on your guitar, or do you have to hit (hard) at a certain spot? I can't seem to get enough sound, only a few noises from snares against the fret.

    ok, you know about hammerons and you know about harmonics! Harmonics are played with one finger right above the metal thing of a fret (is it called fret-marker?). Hammer-ons are played by rapidly pressing the string on the fretboard without playing it with a second finger. Harmonic hammer-ons are played like a combination of both, but in this case you don't just "press" the string on the fret-marker but you kind of strike it a little bit harder without holding it down.

    Great tutorial man! I've been studying a lot of his live performances of this song. In the verse/chorus part where he's using both his hands to hit harmonics I think he's actually hitting the harmonics on the 12th fret (7th in relation to the capo) with one hand (and the top ones of the 12th as the last notes) and the harmonics on the 17th fret (12th to capo) with his other. It just sounds a lot cleaner to me, give a try!

    If you had this level at 2012, wonder where you're now hahah Nice video mate! Though i have a question : I've been wanting to improve and I don't know how i can play stuff like Ben Howard's keep your head up, ed sheeran's small bump , bloodstream....Anyway stuff like that , I found other Ben Howard songs pretty hard so can you help me to reach that level? (what should i do what songs should i learn...) thanks!

    • @Raven2702
      @Raven2702  8 років тому

      +Yassine Muller Hey, first of all thank you! :D
      Well, in my opinion endurance and time is key here! I played like 2-5 hours a day whan I started learning guitar and didnt mind my fingers hurting or even bleeding.
      But to be honest thats a bit extreme. I think to learn fingerstyle you need to learn really difficult songs and stick to them even though you might think you'll never gonna master them.
      Before playing Ben Howard I learned songs like "Drifitng" or "Ebon Coast" by Andy McKee. This way I learned a lot about accuracy and timing. It really helps you when learning other fingerstyle songs that are not so complicated.
      Concerning Ben Howard I recommend learning "Old Pine", "Gracious" or "Diamonds" first. These songs are pretty basic type and not too hard to learn if you use tutorials.
      If you want to learn percussive songs start with "Under the same sun", "depth over Distance" or "Empty Corridors". These are easier compared to "These Waters" for example.
      But really, even if it sounds bad in the beginning you need to stick to it and keep on playing! It will improve after some time.
      Hope I could help :D

    • @snnafzal

      hey thanks for the tutorial. Really very easy to learn this song after watching this tutorial. Though i would suggest you put this strumming pattern in the description, along with the tuning. Not just for this lesson but for other lessons aswell. Its quite common for me to go back to your tutorials to remind myself the tuning, capo placement or the strumming pattern. I am sure other do this too.
      Also, in this tutorial you are hammering low 4 strings by your left index finger on the 7th fret (from the nut) while in this vdo ua-cam.com/video/6KrU1LY-pQU/v-deo.html, Ben is hammering on 12 fret (from the nut). Then for the high 2/4 strings you hammer 9th fret (from nut) while Ben hammers on 12th fret (from nut). Which make the harmonics sound better, on the 7th fret (which is 2nd from the capo) harmonics wouldnt sound clear, but the 12th fret (7th from the capo) it sounds much better. Same for the high two/four strings, 9th fret (4th from capo) harmonics doesn't sound that clear, than 12th fret (7th from capo) harmonics. You can add this bit in the description aswell :)
      Thanks again for all your tutorials Raphi, really very helpful :)

    Hey Ka y,
    danke für die vielen Komplimente! :)
    Das Outro is ziemlich knifflig, da hab ich auch ne Weile gebraucht. Was das Schlagmuster angeht hilft eigentlich nur zuhören. Die Schwierigkeit liegt vielmehr darin das ganze mit den hammer-ons und pull-offs der linken Hand zu kombinieren.
    Schlagmuster: 2xrunter 2xrauf 2xrunter 2xrauf 1xrunter (pause) 1xrunter 1xrauf (runter und rauf schnell) und dann von Anfang wiederholen. Ich hoffe das hilft etwas. Musst noch etwas aufs timing achten.
    Grüße :)

I'm having troubles learning this song I've got the intro downpat really well i'm finding it hard with the verse and chorus.. I just wanted to ask a few questions as I'm wondering does the quality of the sound depend on what guitar you have and am I better off using a banjo capo, I noticed with the banjo capo it covers the 4 strings im using a guitar capo at the moment, could this affect the sound quality? Thanks x

    I have tried it, but i dont get as much sound as he does.. It hurts after a while because i have to 'punch' the strings harder to get a sound. Would be nice if somenone replied :)

      I wouldn't see why not, Although harmonics (In my opinion is harder to achieve on nylon) plus It may not sound completely the same as they have different sounds, but i'm sure you could. Also what I did was wrap my left index finger with tape leaving a bit unwrapped at the knuckle so I could still bend it for the strumming part (so you can still hit hard without as much pain).
      hope this helps :)

    I've tried even just doing one slap and it doesn't ring. Only the unfretted strings ring. I can make the harmonics ring but when I fret the 4th or 2nd and slap the 12th fret it really doesn't make any noise.

    Yeah I definitely am. It did seem to get slightly better with practice though, but it's more that I'm just getting the ringing on the unfretted strings and I'm just trying to hit the whole 6 strings harder and faster. I'll let you know if it continues to get better.

    hey man, grate tutorial but ive got a question
    when i hit the strings with my left index finger during verses, the sound doesn't ring like yours
    has it got something to do with the string, the pressure of the capo or the technique to hit?
    thank you

    Hey bro. Great job. I can't imagine trying to learn this song without a good tutorial. You've saved me a ton of time and I appreciate it. I'd like to donate a little something if I could. You have a paypal?
