Modify 12V power supply to 24V 36V 48V

- I am building a bench power supply. So today I bought two 24V / 10A power supplies. A 36V or 48V power supply is twice as expensive as a 24V power supply . So I bought the 24 power supply and modified it to 36V. The modification is very simple, you just need to replace feedback resistor (in my power supply. it is 2K, I replace it to 1K). Next you need to replace the 35V filter capacitors to 50V or 63V. For a 12V power supply, do the same.
If you like my video, give me a cup coffee. Thank you very much.

Sri which risistor?
Pls tell me
@@rasikanuwan1039 its a feedback providing resisters. It is basically a voltage divider circut. You will find it as a series connection of more than one resisters connected between output voltage and ground terminal.
@@nathanneiman no he used feedback signal w.r.to the signal respective pwm signal will vary which results in o/p voltage variation.
Actually this feedback signal required to maintain o/p voltage same during i/p voltage variation and o/p load variation.
I have tried the same with PC atx smps but it losses stability so then tried in general 48v Smps its OK fine running well for my bldc submersible pump raised to 72v
Modifying the secondary winding is better alternative, it does not alter aux. voltage supply to control circuit and fan
It should be pointed out that you will be dropping your current capability by at least half doing this. So you will need a power supply that will be at least double what you need in your final application.
If you bought a 12V 10A supply, it is capable of 120 watts. If you modify it to 24V, it would be 5A max because the power supply is still only capable of 120 watts.
the components on board are rated by current and voltage, not actual total output power (watts)... The only other thing that might potentially have to be changed or modified is the pulse transformer ( and any component not rated for the volts/current that you are modifying system to)
@@nathana5379 Not entirely correct. It's usually the transformer core, switching transistors and rectifier on primary side that is the weak link. If any of those is maxed out, you will not be able to pull anymore without magic smoke :D
@@zaprodk changing transformer and switching transistors gives you higher current
@@seckinseckin3919every transformer core has a va rating . Winding is for 10 amp here. But cores do have a VA rating. They will heat up. And losses shall mount after max VA handling and efficiency will degrade as dissipation of heat. You do not want that. He is right in saying you cannot get more VA then rated safely. Momentarily yes. You can get 10 amps from 2 amp rated transformer but in short terms. I have done it practically.

If one wanted to avoid having to desolder the 1k resister you could also just solder a 2.2k resistor right on top of the one already in there for parallel resistance of 1047 ohms too.
Your work is great, thanks for sharing! :)
Thanks, hope you enjoy it
Thank you for sharing this video
Apart from the fan which was not designed for 36v, you should check the dissipation rating of the two resistors in the potential divider you changed - lowering the resistor value will increase the current flowing and the top resistor will also see the increased output voltage.
Thanks
Awesome awesome awesome video
Love it Thank you for sharing this ❤️❤️
😁👍👍👍👍
nice work buddy
be careful when working without earth wire
i too had a box full of capacitor collection and make sure u check them b4 soldering with esr meter or something
Good experience sharing...i also didn't notice that in the first place it doesn't have the earth wire...i am worried the box itself could give enough unpleasant shock when using this power supply...
@@neodiy yes u r rite...i also got a few shocks from the case lol
@@koushiks_energy That sound very unpleasant power supply to have...especially when there are kids around

Good job brother..
Well done bro
This trick can help the problems while usimg generator for ews directly
Nice project
So you set variable resistor to maximum before soldering and after it's back to minimum without you even touching it. Pure magic.
lol eagle eyes!! ;)
@@ricardodm9241 so, this video is fake?
It would be better to use another pulse transformer as well. The change the output voltage by a factor or 1.5 or 2 can drive your controller chip into its pwm limits. So you usually will not get the same output power as for the voltage it is designed for. If you reduce the output voltage you will also not get the same output power, because you need higher switching currents. So the losses of the pulse transformer will increase and you possibly overdrive your rectifier current.
When I connect the voltage 170VAC. output voltage is still sufficient. I think when working at 220V. it's still working fine. the maximum PWM limit has not yet been reached.
Good idea. Thank you boss. I am success.
Cool video, thanks :)
dude great video, we want a video increasing Amper of SMPS from 10 to 20 or 30 A . make it soon, respect from Turkey

thanks dude petty useful
nice work

You should also change the output diode as the peak voltage will grow about proportionally to the output voltage! You need 100V diode for 12V, 200V diode for 24V, 300V for 36V, and 400V for 48V, otherwise it will soon fail!
The fan needs a buck/boost converter to continue getting 24V no matter the voltage! You can also power it from another power supply (a much smaller one that you isolate and fit into the high power one)
yes, the diode is 200v. i think, with output voltage of 35v, it still work fine. I used 7824 for the fan.
@@PhdHung 7824 is lossy and the input has to be at least 27V to regulate 24V at the output, so better to use some converter that can regulate 24V from an input voltage between 3 and 42V! I can give you a link if you want!
200V is not enough for a 36V power supply, need MBR30300 (yes, it exists, a 300V schottky diode)
Nice
Thanks bro
Thanks, will try it, i have many 12v psu, will try to make it 24v to charge my 24v battery pack
Udah coba, beda seri 12v, beda resistornya, akhirnya ganti potensio 103, mantab abis, dpt 14,4v buat charge aki 😁
woow, great project!! i like it
Thanks bro
good bro
I think great job
thanks
Ok felicitari
How far does the voltage drop under load though?
The main filter capacitors are connected in sieres for higher voltage rating (310V DC on 220AC input). There is no negative voltage here.
You removed the old capacitors and soldered 03 capacitors but I realized that 01 was 63 / 1000uf and the other two smaller ones, what is the voltage and uf?
Nice idea. But It's imp you tell people to rewire the fan with some voltage regulator to complete the video complete. Without that we can't use that high amperes.
Whats the use of the 5w21kj choke you connected permanently on the PSU? Is it safe to remove the output when the input is still connected?
Thank you very much
What did you do with the 24V fan at the end?
Did you replace it with a 36V fan?
Also, with this change, how much the 10A rated current of the device will decrease
Hi i finally came around to upgrade the Volts output of my 12V power supply, opened it went to check if pretty much anything was looking good to the point of switching the resistors near capacitors with the following ohm 600 from my right next 1.2 kohm and the last its 2."something" kohm, based on the video i should change the one in the middle, which in my case is the 1.2 kohm, with 1kohm right?
or should i change the first which is 600 ohm?or should i change the third which is 2 kohm?
If the answer is change the one in the middle would it change anything if i put 1-kohm but slighltly bigger size?
Keep in mind that my ignorance in electronics its very high!!!!,
One more thing the capacitors 12V i switched were 3300 uF i've put 1000uF 50V,change anything if the Frads are lower?
Please if you kindly could answer i would really appreciate it.
My SMPS transistor has some plastic cover attached with thermal paste on it. Should I remove the plastic or should I keep it I am trying to change thermal paste on it so need advice to keep that plastic or just apply on the transistor and touch it to the metel body without plastic
Looks simple to do, maybe can make adjustable by replacing the 2K with a pot? 😜 Is all SMPS same ?
Thanks for sharing 💕
Amazing video. I'm trying to fix my broken psu. i think I can repair it now.
Last comment made by this user lmao
No
congratulation, you killed the power supply
:))
but now he have an adjustable fan.
what value resistor would you need to make it work 48v
I use a POT the FB connected right on the POT wiper.
good
And how limiting Ampers power please?
thanks
Any idea if we change transformer to make it ct for audio?
You should replace Shottky Diode too... Because increasing voltage can cause more reverse voltage of Diode.. that can kill the diode...
correct
👍👍
But how do you determine feedback resistors... ? Is it goes from out to tl421 adhust pin by voltage divider array ?
Okay you didnt discuss load regulation , but the built is good .
I did this to a 12v PSU. I let thing I didn't change is change from the 2k to the 1k resistor , is that why it still shows 12v?
How to get higher current 10a to 15a or 20a any modification? By changing the diode output and shunt?
My power supply is 12v 30a, the output is 12.6, i upgrade the capacitor 35v 4700uf and 1k resistor , so the output is 12.9 , my power supply is over heating, almost burn, i use it for my car amplifier, sorry for my english not good✌️
Nice multimeter bro...
Keep it up...
I need 7v power supply. how to modify 12v to 9v? to decrease voltage, don't you need to replace the capacitor? and what resistor should I use?
Good idea. But Does it still give same amperes?
can it be used for switching 12v 20A, bro?
Homemade 102
, hello. Can I install any resistor between the red wire of FAN and connector that decrease the voltage to ~24V? Or can’t you do that? Thanks.
can use 100 ohm or use IC LM7824
Ok bạn
I saw you that you can adjust it down to 20 volt can you confirm because i need to modify this to power my jigsaw
Do you think 8A diode bridge require heatsink?thx 4 video
What capacity capacitors you removed and what are new capacitor values?
the question..it is safe for high load? on 6 or 7amp for 10amp smps...i know if make more vol the amp will be decrease
I would like to thank you for the video , and i want some help if you can lead me to where to dig , if i want the output voltage to raise slowly exemple of a 1 volt step , eg 10/11/12/13//14/15 slowly .Thanks .
Estimado. Genio. Te consulto. Tengo una fuente de 12v. X 5amp.
Good video, explains a lot with those power supplies. but ffs how many bells do you need? Do you think your viewers are Pavlov dogs?
There is a hidden problem - primary side transistors . ... Lets say with a turn ratio of 27p:27p:4s when in 24V the transistors are seeing 162+Ripple(peak) accross them(since this push pull type) but then when you change the output voltage to 36 well they are seeing now 243+Ripple(peak) --- . and also the secondary side diodes please check the reverse voltage across them... There are also lot of other problems which may occur doing this... So it is recommended to not to change the voltage of your SMPS without redesigning the whole smps...
Hi
Input 220
Out +24/15A
I want to lower the voltage to 14v, but I don't have resistors where you have them. There is one jumper What should I do, please tell me.
Bos kalao ampli mobil di ks power suply yg 24v di pasang di ruma Han apa bs y dan ada pengaruh ngk PD power nya
Excellent video! Thank you for creating it. Would you happen to know how to vary the current from 0 to 10 amps on one of these power supplies?
Those are constant voltage power supplies, thus the current depends on the load. Maybe I'm not understanding you correctly?
@@petermuller608 If the load is a high capacity battery, it will draw the current the PSU can produce. Question is : how to (for example) limit the current to half the PSU can produce.
I bought 36v 5A from online shop. This model using blue pcb. All resistor using smd component. Can you make video that i would to upgrade to 60v please. I want to know what componant shoud i change. Sorry for my bad english
