If you're not physically fit, remember that breathing hard, like Shasheen was doing in this video, HELPS A LOT!
When I'm lifting heavy stuff, breathing gives me a small strength boost, and it will always help in stressful, physically demanding situations!

No, they don't try to get no matter what. That's how you die in it after 2 days of trying. He did it in 2 minutes: he leaned forward, then backward to make him more horizontal, then proceeded to free his limbs from the quicksand while trying to stay horizontal.
Very dedicated set of moves to get out of sand very quickly.

You need to lean, that part was right. But then liquefy the sand again by moving one leg quickly in small movements. Then the sand will relax again as more water gets in between the grains, and you can remove it. Then you’ll do the same thing with the other but you need to be careful that the one you got out doesn’t go back in.

  • @mudquicksandplay

For most quicksand, you're not likely to sink all the way because the body is generally much less dense than the quicksand (ditch the heavy backpack and other excess weight before it sinks with you). You can get stuck, though, as the water and sand separate as you sink, with heavy wet sand settling around your legs. Incoming tides, flash flooding in a desert wash and exposure are potential killers if you get stuck.
But generally, if you find yourself stuck in quicksand, stop squirming, figure out your plan for escape, and then execute it - calmly, slowly, steadily. Spread your body weight on the sand (lean forward or back; back is better given how we bend at the knees, but if you're already bent at the knees under the sand, forward can help) to help keep from sinking further. Sometimes you can dig out some of the sand in front of or behind you to give your torso more range of movement. Slowly rock your legs to give them some freedom of movement in the sand packed around them. You may have to focus on both legs at times, but if you can get one leg free, it spreads more of your weight on top of the sand at that point, and it's just a matter of time before the other leg is out. Rock your legs a bit, pull yourself out a bit. Repeat.
And if all else fails, ask the cameraman to put down the camera and help.
It only took him about two minutes to get out, and he seemed to be a bit worried in the process. I wasn't sure why. After all, two to five minutes of effort to get out really isn't that bad when you're waist deep in thick quicksand. My longest was almost half an hour.

Good trooper! He gave sound advice on removing extra baggage. It was a heavy back-pack that sealed the fate of botanist Jack Pickett, who perished in the Okeechobee swamp back in "64. What he thought was a dry stream bed was a deep quagmire camouflaged by wind-blown sand. He thought it'd be a path of less resistance compared with the thick swamp vegetation he & fellow botanist, Fred Stahl, grew tired of hiking through. But that path of was a path of less resistance - to the weight of 'em & his back-pack! It quickly became a path of more resistance to hiking & Stahl's futile attempt to rescue Pickett! By the time Stahl told Pickett to "take your pack off ! " it's snap-release was immersed in muck too thick for Pickett to move his hands through. Stahl made a desperate
attempt to prod Pickett's face from the smothering muck using a tree branch on a rock for a fulcrum. When he pushed down his end the branch snapped. the only movement in Pickett, now unconscious, was him sinking in a muddy grave! His buddy's muddy demise haunted Stahl the rest of life; if he'd told Pickett to release his packs snap-hook before it was immersed in impenetratable muck, would that branch have held?

Dont pull yourself out by brute force; you can tear you ligaments. Pull yourself out one leg at a time by wiggling it while pulling until you can rest on the knee of your freed leg. Then do the same with your other leg.

That doesn't work if you sink as deeply as he did (up to the waist). I would say the general rule is to try and spread your weight by using your arms surface instead of only your hands to pull you out. The hands are more likely to just sink in as well because more weight is concentrated in a small area. While you pull with your arms, try and wiggle your lower body.

holy shit, this got my heart pumping like crazy by the end.. getting yourself out requires tremendous stamina and strength.. kudos to you for making it out and sharing this video.. now don't ever try anything like this again..

Actually, it doesn’t. It just requires patience and firm, yet slow, deliberate moves over a longer period of time. Rushing will only make you sink deeper. Getting out isn’t easy, but its certainly doable. And you don’t have to be super strong to do it either. But its essential that you don’t panic. The guy in this video nearly panicked. That’s a sure way of sinking deeper. And although there’s a point where your buoyancy SHOULD stop you from sinking any further, don’t count on it. If you don’t panic, you’ll sink between waist to chest deep, depending on your body composition. But if you panic, you’ll continue to sink until you get to the point where you can barely even move anymore. That’s about neck to chin deep. You’ll continue to sink because the suction between your body and the mud/quicksand will continue to pull you down as you continue to thrash about because of your panicking. Every time you shift your weight and push a foot down so you can pull your other leg up, you’ll create more suction on the foot you pushed down. Then, in your panic, you then push the opposite foot down trying to pull the other leg up. Keep on doing this and before you realize it, you’ll be neck deep down in the stuff, until you can barely move at all. Meanwhile, the pressure against your legs will have increased significantly, because mud and quicksand have weight. That pressure makes it nearly impossible to pull yourself back onto the surface. Now you’re really stuck. And you’re not going anywhere until you calm down and think through your predicament. So...exactly how do you get yourself out? You’re equipped with 2 built in shovels, called hands. Use them to push as much material away from your body as possible. The more you move away, the less effect the suction will have against you. Then start digging to remove material away from your legs. As the material is lessened, you should once again be able to move your legs. Making slow, deliberate movements, try pushing your feet forward, one foot at a time so they come in contact with material that’s been less disturbed. Slowly push against this material to lift you ever so slightly without having either foot sink down further. This will slowly bring you back to about waist deep. Now slowly work one leg upward, digging around it as needed. Work that leg until it’s back on the surface (this takes time). Once it’s on the surface, fold that leg underneath your butt to get yourself a larger contact area with the material so it can support your weight better. Then work on the still trapped leg. While doing this, it helps to lean back some to distribute your weight over the largest area possible. Once your trapped leg is nearly to the surf, lay onto your back and try to get them to the surface with slight kicks (the mud is heavy and will be weighing them down). Remove as much mud as possible from both legs. Roll over onto your chest, and slowly crawl your way to safety.
If you ever find yourself sinking, the best thing you can do is to sit down onto your butt to remove weight from your legs. You should stop sinking any further. Once the mud/quicksand manages to envelop your butt, getting out will be a lot harder. And if you manage to find yourself chest deep, it’s going to be even harder still. Regardless, people who end up firmly trapped are using moves that are simply way too forceful. You’re never going to be able to forcefully jerk your body from mud or quicksand. Slow deliberate moves will set you free, forceful, panicked moves will only get you even further stuck. It’s not the mud or quicksand that kills you. Its either the incoming tide or exposure to the elements that do you in. If you’re not sure how to free yourself, it’s best just to avoid it all together.

If you have walked in to quick sand sit down immediately lay flat . This will take the weight of your legs. You can ease you legs out slowly by digging and getting water in there and it becomes a loose mess . Everything slowly

more like, what not to do. didn't you see the woman. she brought one leg up instead of shifting the weight like stepping which causes sinking. then with the leg up, she bent it as you said horizontal is better, and used it as a wide surface to bring the other leg up.

Totally wrong way. You’ll exhaust yourself in no time.
Strengthen one leg and keep it still. With your other leg make quick wriggling motions while maintaining upward force. Remember, keep one leg still. Once the free leg breaks the surface bend it at the knee and keeping your freed leg on the surface now and still repeat the proceedure for the other leg. Viola. Your free.
