Another fantastic recipe thank you John I tried it today and put a filling of apple, blackcurrant jam and custard in it in 3 layers and it is absolutely delicious. It’s just like my Mum used to make when I was a young boy in the UK in Grimsby Lincolnshire where I was born. You're so helpful with all the tips you give. I had no idea about granulated sugar becoming caster sugar becoming icing sugar. Some of us (most of us?), especially those of us who only occasionally cook and bake, or barely do it at all, don't know this stuff and so head off to the shops buying items that we think are different/separate. But it's not just this, it's all the little tips throughout all of your videos, which when I've followed your simple instructions and the tips have always seen me have a successful outcome. Now I gotta go buy me those sandwich tin things coz we ain't got them. I didn't know they were a thing until now.

Another lovely cake John. I'm not a chef but what I do when I'm adding the eggs is add a little bit of the flour at the same time so it doesn't curdle. I don't know whether this is the right thing to do it not, I think I read it somewhere

Me and our 12 year old daughter Inga have tried our hand at this cake. We added the sugar before seeing the part about making it fine, turns out ours is jam sugar! When it came time to do the "drop test" our batter stuck to the spoon like clay and we laughed so hard!!!! It's in the oven now and we'll give an update how it came out after our wee apple timer goes off!

I made this cake today and it turned out delicious. The batter looked a bit too thick at the end so I melted and added around 20-30g butter which helped. Thanks for the recipe.

Another fantastic recipe thank you John I tried it today and put a filling of apple, blackcurrant jam and custard in it in 3 layers and it is absolutely delicious. It’s just like my Mum used to make when I was a young boy in the UK in Grimsby Lincolnshire where I was born. It’s so much better than cake bought in the shops the difference is unbelievable big thanks much appreciated!

You're so helpful with all the tips you give. I had no idea about granulated sugar becoming caster sugar becoming icing sugar. Some of us (most of us?), especially those of us who only occasionally cook and bake, or barely do it at all, don't know this stuff and so head off to the shops buying items that we think are different/separate. But it's not just this, it's all the little tips throughout all of your videos, which when I've followed your simple instructions and the tips have always seen me have a successful outcome.
Now I gotta go buy me those sandwich tin things coz we ain't got them. I didn't know they were a thing until now.

Another lovely cake John. I'm not a chef but what I do when I'm adding the eggs is add a little bit of the flour at the same time so it doesn't curdle. I don't know whether this is the right thing to do it not, I think I read it somewhere

Me and our 12 year old daughter Inga have tried our hand at this cake. We added the sugar before seeing the part about making it fine, turns out ours is jam sugar! When it came time to do the "drop test" our batter stuck to the spoon like clay and we laughed so hard!!!! It's in the oven now and we'll give an update how it came out after our wee apple timer goes off!

thanks John, literally just made this, as i was dividing the mixture i realised i had an 8" and a 10" oops, so just used the 8" and baked for 33 minutes, cut in half and a lovely birthday cake for a friend.

I made this cake today and it turned out delicious. The batter looked a bit too thick at the end so I melted and added around 20-30g butter which helped. Thanks for the recipe.
