    Hey Ali - I also used a pestle & mortar to grind up the smaller pieces of graphite after I couldn’t hold them on the sandpaper. I probably will get a dedicated one as I’m not sure my kitchen one is very happy right now!! 🙀🙀 Worked like a charm though!

    Hello Ali!I am learning so much from your tutorials !Art school is great for getting a foundation but what artists learn from other artists is so much more valuable!!This was yet another great tip! I have so many old pencils and I got to thinking and I tried this with some of my old water color pencils that were broken or to short and I put it in little make up containers it made really amazing water color powder!Thanks for the tip and inspiration!

    I use a mechanical clutch pencil, the type with the sharpener on the back end. Every time I sharpen my lead I tap the sharpener into a bowl.
    Since I use powdered graphite only occasionally this method gives me enough for my needs.

    Great video! Following along with your drawing tutorials from the U.S. Another method that would give the results you tried with a hammer is to use a mortar & pestle (used in cooking & science) or any solid surface & a heavy smooth stone.

    Along the lines of the hammer method. A mortar and pestle would work really well and make a fine powder than the hammer as well as keep it contained.

    • @camgreer
      @camgreer 5 років тому

      I had the same thought. A small, nonporous mortar and pestle could probably do it more efficiently timewise, just using a pile of broken lead refills.

    Other methods include mortar and pestle if you have one (this is a more controlled version of the hammer method), and saving the dust when sharpening a woodless pencil. If you can get your hands on woodless graphite sticks you can shave or crush those. The latter are commonly included in the inexpensive Chinese-made drawing kits all over eBay, Wish, and Amazon. Indeed, I bought such a case myself and substituted the cheap pencils with a set of FC 9000s. In any case I agree with Ali that graphite powder is a great timesaver in graphite art.

    I sharpen my woodcase graphite pencils just as Ali does, and keep a little rectangular snap-top container on my art table. Every time I sharpen, I save the excess graphite. It's a mix of all different hardnesses, but it seems to work. As Ali does, I usually only use it for large areas, not where detail is important, so it's worth taking a moment each sharpening, vs doing a ton of pencils at once, unless you really need a large quantity at one time.
