dont do something to succeed, do it for the sake of a genuine attempt. if the attempt is truly genuine, then it is successful
Yeah! It's not "win or lose", it's Win or Learn! Even if something doesn't go as planned, you can learn from the mistake if you let yourself
Learned this from art. 80% of the things I make go in the trash. It’s important for my mental health to remind myself that those are learning opportunities, and that they’re essential to get me to those paintings that blow even me away.

I'm a student at University and I often feel like I need to grow or achieve something to be valuable. Thank you for reminding me that "Just to continue is enough."
Highly relatable
In the same situation right now, tried to do too many things at once and suffered a lot in terms of GPA. Taking a step back, hopefully that turns out ok.
continuing is growing honestly. even if you’re doing a bunch of small things relatively frequently it still adds up. at least that’s what I tell myself as someone in the same situation lol
"Just to continue should be your purpose"
This one hits so hard for some reason.

Your videos single-handedly helped me get a healthy outlook on life, thank you so much.

I've been trying all summer to create a more perfect routine, constantly writing down important goals and behaviors I want to adopt. I would write down all the things I wanted to do, then proceed to do like three of the easiest tasks on the list, then play video games, then forget it for like a week.
Recently I took a test to see my best and worst soft skills. What I found was my worst score was in self-monitoring. But of course, I already knew that. For so long I have been trying to change the biggest flaw within my character and failing pretty miserably. I was trying to fix myself instead of accepting myself.
My best score on that test was believing in myself
This week, instead of trying to meticulously create the perfect schedule for myself, I decided to lean into my biggest strength. I flat out refused to manage my time, because I clearly wasn't good at it. As it turns out, even without a schedule I knew exactly what I had to do. Instead of writing down due dates for assignments I was going to ignore, I decided to just read the textbook. I started reading the required chapters a whole two days before it was due, which is a lifetime for a procrastinator like me. When I ignored everything else and did what I knew I needed to do, I actually found it very easy to stay on task. No planning required.
I guess my broader understanding from this is that it's crucial that you focus on improving your strengths instead of your weaknesses. Weaknesses can be minimized, delegated, overridden, ignored. Strengths can get things done. Understanding your weaknesses and not trying to fix them is essentially what self-acceptance is, and it seems like it's the only way for the best parts of you to shine.
Can you share the test?
This one hit home for me. I’m also a very bad procrastinator but when I started managing my time as I had all the time. Just having the mindset to achieve the goals we want will bring us to what we need to do. “Just continuing is enough “
Wow thank you for sharing. I can relate to you a lot, I’ll try this.
What’s the link to the test?

This video arrived at such a beautiful timing I just started reading Shunryu Suzuki’s book as well and it’s been helping me find moments of peace and comfort in my army camp
I enjoy this guy's takes on Buddhism. Personally I've used meditation as a way to ground a turbulent mind. The chanting of sutra either orally or mentally causes only the most important thoughts to remain for me. But often more than anything it's a breathing exercise.
This also hits upon a wisdom I learned a long time ago. "the only way to become successful is to fail in as many ways as possible so you know the things not to do". That's one of those ideas that keeps me going when I blunder and regress. Also the wisdom that "only those who are seeking something the hardest can become lost in life".
The notion that a feeling of being lost is natural and can be a good thing because it means that you aren't content.
Dude i read all your comments you look different. Like you sound more aware in life in general than most people thats impressive. God bless bro
When you know nothing everything seems possible but when you know everything nothing new seems possible.
I've been living at a western Zen Center for almost 9 months now and practicing zazen for over a year and this book continues to be inspiring and helpful. I find it fascinating and heartening that Suzuki-Roshi's words still provide a fresh perspective for so many people 50 years later. I also recommend The 3 Pillars of Zen for those interested in other Western Buddhism books.
It seems like these videos come out when you most need them. Thanks sisyphus
Dude I love your editing style.
more buddhism or spiritual content would be much appreciated. As a secular westerner with an interest in the karmic religions and the practices of yoga and meditation, I can't get enough of it.
after watching this video i read Suzuki's book and it ultimately changed my life for the better. thank you for introducing me to his work in a palatable way so i could then explore it in a more intricate way i otherwise wouldn't have😊
We don’t need to grow, just do what the moment calls for. While the moment controls you, control yourself. That peace is our new growth.
Hopefully one day the moment will call for us to be still and rest. Cause now we got lots of do!

I've been out of practice for years. I have made attempts to reapproach zazen, but with two many ideas and preconceptions about it. I appreciate you introducing me to Shunryū Suzuki. thank you for uploading. your content is always incredible.
Thanks for covering what has been, at least for me, a very impactful book. Will come back to this again !
Thanks, this video saves me from days of depression bc of a life crisis.

I discovered this book in a box in my basement when I was about 13 and I wonder sometimes if I would be alive now if I hadn't. It became a deep part of my worldview and especially my self-view.

Inspiring the open learning mind starts very early - but do you know of any society that saw the sponge of a child's mind as a resource to be fed, not individual cases, but the entire society. That would be a fully human society. Our genome provides the bounds, we need to enable them.

What is that music?
The real question is if this idea still holds true for music.
"just to continue should be your purpose" so do parkour? ok!
eh... I feel like Zen's only commitment is to not be committed. It feels like they are trying to subdue drive itself, by building a sort of detachment from the idea of wanting anything.
Maybe I'm straw manning this, but I wonder if this is just a round about way of just being dead while being alive.
Our ilusory perspective on our true nature needs to die before we physically die so we can experience reality as it is and be free from the many unecessary attachments which causw many sufferings
Read about the four noble truths taught by the Buddha
@@USENAM9U it’s kind of a catch 22.
I could ask why I should follow your advise, but your advise would include not wanting to follow your advise in order to actually follow your advise, because wanting anything, including wanting to not want anything is apparently the central issue.
But I figure, wouldn’t suicide just be WAY easier? The dead don’t have desires as far as I can tell, and the living seem to always have desires, even if it’s for simple things like food and shelter.
It feels like Zen Buddhism just is averse to being a conscious living creature, since drives are seemingly foundational to our ability to just survive.
@@xenoblad when we talk about dying before actually dying it does not mean we need to not live life as fully and as mindfully as possible, it means we have to kill our perception that we are the voices and thoughts in our heads, many people mistake the aim of buddhism, including some western philosophers such as nietzche, buddhism is not life denying , it denies our ilusions about reality as perceived by a “animal
Brain”
@@xenoblad if i’d give you some advice it would be to read about the diference between buddhism and niihilism if you want to know more about it

but one thing I know that never dies:
the reputation of each dead man.

Hey Sisyphus do you have any interest in having your vids translated?

Sorry Suzuki but trying to understand the world is how we got Technology and improvements in living standards. If we all sat and meditated all day we would probably be dead.
the teachings are about going with the flow, and not getting upset over failure. is that not something we could all do with in our daily life? would we have the technology and better living standards if every failure was regarded as a tragedy? we would not. surely a mix is most beneficial, yes? because in our current lives, emphasis is placed on the material. not the present, but the future. a better life tomorrow, which is a good focus, and very admirable. but that progress can not be obtained unless we look within, which is the exact point of sitting and meditating.
@@geraldpopinski5650 Well Put.
@@geraldpopinski5650 I agree with this but I would say our fear of failure is rooted in what happened to us as kids surrounding failure, and pretty much every other recurring problem we have. No clue if Buddhists think the same thing but from what I understand they view it as an inherent part of human nature, this fear of failure.
man I was so sad that you never really explained or justified the quote before the ad break that I lost faith and stopped watching. please dont go the way of the school of life and become a sentimental self-help channel. I undestand that its important for many people but theres already the school of life, and I really was hoping for something deeper. its because I disagree wholeheartedly that the quote is true and indeed honing my craft for decades has opened my mind so much I feel where in the beginning there seemed to be only one path; forward
