This is a great opportunity to see how the Customer Service response is to this issue. It's unfortunate that it leaked, but what might be more interesting is how they respond.
I saw a video of someone using this tent in the winter. There was snow blowing into the tent. My best guess is it's coming in through the vents (it was windy and snowing in that video and they were only using the fly without the tent body). I'm going to put some stick-on velcro on the vents on mine. I haven't had the opportunity to use it yet so that will happen before I take it anywhere. Otherwise the quality of this tent is very good. Fingers crossed velcro will be a fix.
It's always. like I am there with him. Luke is truly the real deal. I have been watching him and his FANTASTIC wife Susy... for years... A great time every episode. Thanks Luke.
@@Yaketyyak21 He does that as well... But, FIRST lets see if the TENT Leaks from RAIN... without adding human CONDENSATION on the inside. That would have been the next test. Air flow and condensation. Like I said, Luke is the REAL Deal. If you had watch more episodes, you would already know this.
I follow along in the transcript. I love when it says the rain sounds are applause. Today it added a couple of thank you’s after the applause. Boy that cracked me up.
Thank you, Luke, for all you do. Giving us reviews, we can trust. Your videos are one of the things I look forward to every day. I've been watching for years brother.
Thank you Luke. I predicted that it would leak near the door. My tipi tent from another vendor has potential leak issues near the door as well and I now always rig up a awning from over the top apex to out front of the door to provide both a shaded sitting area and to greatly reduce the rain getting in by way of the door zippers. The awning idea is also great when or if I have to leave the tent while it is raining or heavy dew. I always pack a towel just in case to mop up small-ish leaks ;-)
Wow. I am so glad I watched your review before I bought this tent. I watched another channel raving about this tent but he did so from inside his home with the tent packed up. I literally was on the verge of making a purchase and then I decided to watch your review and boy am I glad I did. I would have been stuck in a highly wet environment with a leaky tent. I usually pack a rain tarp anyways just to add to the protection from wet weather but I always prefer to have gear, especially, a tent that is water proof. Thanks, Luke, for another spectacular gear review. Let's hope DOD makes some changes to their design.
Great review, Luke. It's a shame when you run into a product from a trusted company that doesn't live up to their reputation. Having said that, those companies are most likely going to improve/correct the product in the next version.
If water does enter the tent it will be through the vent near the top. It depends on the force of the wind and the angle it forces the rain to go. Edit: It leaked more than I expected. I thought that the slope of the tent would have helped prevent leakage. Oh well ... I won't be buying it unless and until they address the issue. You can't be stuck in the middle of nowhere with water saturating your gear.
I have a 7 person ozark trail teepee tent that I purchased in Arizona for that area. It didn't rain and the tent was a good choice for budget. Used only once. However I moved to east Tennessee, not knowing any reviews about the tent, I went camping in the Tennessee woods, the tent information stated it was waterproof. It rained heavily that night, I was scared because of condensation, being from Arizona, the desert, I wasn't used to camping in heavy rain. To my surprise and delight, besides the condensation (happens in any tent) the tent did not leak. For the price it served me well. Knowing that the tent did well in a heavy rain, camping in wet land is quite nice when you stay dry. I converted it into a hot tent and treated with waterproof spray, have used it several years now. The ozark trail teepee has a two pole system eliminating the center pole. This makes for a great size stand up tent , I use a double cot, a portable TV tray table a camp chair and my wood stove. The tent has a floor so I use a rug. With these items in my tent, can cook or make coffee if heavy rain and stuck inside tent, with all this there is still room inside, can use a old coffee can for bathroom while standing, girlfriend finds it easier than going outside too. Even though it's shady topic, it's one that should be mentioned. Two people can be comfortable in the size of 11.7 ft x 11.7 ft. I really enjoy this tent and will purchase another. I've seen you done reviews of other ozark trail tents and they didn't pan out, but you might like this tent to review for others who might be on a budget, I'm not strapped for money now since here in Tennessee, none the less this tent has been awesome so I don't Intend to get another, brand especially if it only has a center pole, not having a center pole, the space is perfect for one or two campers, glamping.
I've tried to love teepees, but restricted use in the largest part of the tent, and mucho mandatory stake-outs, is impractical in poor weather backwods
i've been using polish laavvu tipi tent for years now without much problem (although heavy rain WILL be problem because its poncho type tent without integrated floor), just need reseal ever year or two.
I think you do much better reviewing camper gear than some of the others. I especially like when you guys are truthful regarding the products bad points and failures.
Luke, you make predicting this outcome hard! Your title says “I was completely wrong about this one” and then you start by predicting it will *not* leak! 😂 I must therefore predict that it will. (But in all honesty, had I not known the video title, I would have predicted *no* it won’t leak, mostly because of the excellent shape of the tent, with steep angles and no flat surfaces to catch water. 😁👍
Mine has been outside for two weeks. We finally had rain today with threats of tornados. I looked inside and it was bone dry. Not sure on the quality because it’s a Japanese company but some items made in China.
Thanks for the update and leak test. Sad it leaked. I had hoped it would stay water tight and not infiltrate moisture into the main cabin of the tent. Glad you tested.
The company could probably fix both these issues fairly easily. Either a larger storm flap on the zipper or simply add an inner flap to it which would force any water blowing in down the flap to the ground. I'm pretty sure by looking at the design of that vent, that is where the other problem is. The vent looks almost flush with the opening. Maybe slightly below the opening. Adding an inch or so of the fabric to the length of the outer part of the vent would most likely mitigate the problem simply by the amount of overlap while still not taking anything away from any ventilation that vent offers. My biggest concern with this tent would be condensation collecting near the upper center of the tent. I've found most condensation in teepee style tents forms there. Even with an inner tent that condensation can easily drip through the mesh inner. Condensation is an issue with many tents today so mist of us just deal with it and accept it unless it's a major problem. Maybe the walls are steep enough that condensation is immediately rolled down the inner of the fly to the ground. That would be great. I do believe this could be a great teepee tent though if they did just a little bit more to fix the leaks. I think anyone buying one could easily add a simple inner flap to the zipper and also velcro an extension piece to that vent if they suspect rain. Although I'm not a teepee tent person, I could honestly see this tent has a lot of potential for those who like this style of tent.
I was really hoping it wouldn't leak, but I always water proof my tents even though they say they are water proof. But it does make me wonder where the water is coming from from the other side. Thank you Luke for the help.
When planning a purchase, I always watch your reviews first, and I have never been disappointed. I even have found some things I didn't know were out there. Thanks for your objectivity and creativity.
Would be curious for you to spend the night in it to investigate in real time where the water is coming from, maybe a slight adjustment of the setup would solve it.
The only tents I've used that didn't leak were treated canvass. Every single synthetic fiber tent I've had leaked somewhere, usually around the zipper or the seams.
Huge fan. Love the videos. I would like to have what u thought was the best tent of the year. And give us a run down of the gears best for the year Keep up the hard work!

I've got one of those Napier truck tents. It snowed like 4 in and we had horrible wind over 50 miles an hour and I kept thinking man this thing is going to tear up it never moved and stayed on the back of the truck stayed I would say 95% dry cuz there was I guess it was just simple condensation cuz there was a little bit of wet inside.
It's pretty hard to screw up a tipi tent. They're literally the simplest and most inherently robust designs around, easily handling high winds and snow loading. But failing to properly waterproof will wreck any good design.

I'm surprised. This DOD product failed a basic leak test. Unfortunate to say the least. Thanks for your due diligence as always, Luke. I'll be waiting to see if DOD responds.

I've got an idea Luke, since cameras are so cheap today why not leave the tents you're testing lit up with cameras watching from the inside during the tests? Maybe we will gain some real insight as to how the water magically spatters and flies around inside some of these tents?

No I didn't think it would leak. If for no other reason the steep pitch. I didn't think water would have time to soak in long enough to leak. Because it would run off too fast?
When opening the tent up, could that had been what caused the water on the opposite side of the zipper, there was a extremely large amount of water on the door that could had caused some of it when opened. Maybe maybe not it was hard to tell not being there lol
It rained there like it has been raining in Arkansas. It has rained for two weeks here so far and is not forecasted to stop until Friday. I really liked the OneTigris Tetra tent you had in your last video. I plan to buy one now. You would think the DOD tent would be the same. Great review.
Could the possible leak on the other side be water running across the floor. Only a minimal amount of water would leave no trace of running like that. It might also help to be in the tent when doing the tests so you could see first hand where leaks are
I'm quite surprised it leaked. DoD usually has quality gear and this failure is unusual. I'm wondering if it was just a soaking rain without the high winds would have changed the outcome.
Luke, i must thank you for every vital advice you give in tour videos. I'm from Italy and I Hope someday you'll have the chance to review Ferrino products. It's an italian brand that makes really good quality camping Gear. Unfortunately I don't know if they ship to U.S.
It's easy to stereotype a particular brand because of where it was designed/manufactured, while its a disappointment that it "failed" it should be noted that DoD is relatively young, starting out as a camping utensil company, before branching out to larger equipment like tents/fireplaces. Unlike Japanese Snowpeak which started with tents then pushed out equipment. Doesn't excuse the results but it does show the inexperience of DoD compared to snowpeak. But then again, i hope they get better and i really really wish the senior camping brand SOTO would branch out to tent equipment and be just as courageous as DoD
1 It failed .! And it needs work. 2 I have a true spec. Rain jacket and I was hunting this past season in a mid to heavy rain storm, for 5 to 8 hours on and off heavy rain and the jacket. Pockets wet. Me though my pockets and stomach were wet. And I said this is what we issue our troops. So I said it failed 3 {. And these videos are great to watch before bed. Lol
Thanks for the review, but since your title said you were disappointed that gave it away that it leaked. Asking us to guess was pointless hah. Your video title gave it away 🙂
You could probably create a whole "Rain on tent" Asmr channel with how much footage you have of it raining on so many different kinds of tents. I bet those would be lovely to sleep/relax with. As for this one.. it seems like the vent is a problem with this shape.. The shape worked really well when the tent was made of hides.. as another commenter pointed out it looks like having the wind blow in certain directions would send the rain into the vent.. comes down to pure luck of how much gets in if thats the case.
I didn't think it would leak either, but I guess I was wrong. Usually the design of a tipi style tent is enough to shed the water but this one most definitely has issues.
I don't think that a teepee tent is a good design due to the upward angle of the entrance flap. With water falling directly on the flap, it's pretty easy for a leak to occur. Tents with a vertical entrance flap or an "awning" that protects the opening would fare much better. As for the other leak, I would suspect that some seams need to be sealed, or else there is a window with the same design problem as the entrance (an upward facing opening/zipper).
I think most people use this tent with the "hat" and a hex tarp attached to it over the door. That seems to be how it's intended to be used, although it doesn't come with either of those things. The "hat" also isn't available in the US except on ebay via Japan. i've just ordered one.
Would you ever be willing to review a pomoly tent? Their hot tents seem better made but ever other UA-cam review seems bought or low production quality. Would be very much appreciated 👍🏻
Weird. I have this exactly same product and it went through almost a week of strong winds and rain when I was hiking. No leaking what so ever.
did you seam seal it?

It's shape should facilitate runoff and if it has good seams and water proofing then it shouldn't leak.
The seams are all sealed. There is also velcro in addition to a zipper on the storm flap over the zipper. 100% it is coming in at the vent.
I'm using this tent for months now and have never had such an issue with the leak.

But then again, i hope they get better and i really really wish the senior camping brand SOTO would branch out to tent equipment and be just as courageous as DoD
DOD stands for "Damn O Damn"😂
i think it will!
Great idea - I use rain sounds to sleep to - Do it Luke
Haha i like the ending music
Really like your reviews Luke, I noticed your jacket you were wearing at the start of the video for this review can you tell me what it is?
I didn't think it would leak either, but I guess I was wrong. Usually the design of a tipi style tent is enough to shed the water but this one most definitely has issues.
I thought it would leak nice looking tent though.
I was wrong. I predicted dry tent.
Love the rest of the design and size but that leakage of water is a problem
Is it light ??? Looks so.
