    Promarker vs Copic....... Which is worth it?
    Don't forget if you wanted to grab yourself a set like I had in the video, Links in the description.
    - Also, regarding the storm, me and my wife are fine and safe. our area was hit HARD but we are on high ground, so we didn't suffer like our town which had 1m+ deep water running through. Unfortunate this has happened especially that its effected my in laws SO bad. My wife is panicking, but we will do what we can.
    Anyways, I hope EVERYONE missing is found safe and it's truly a tragedy so many lost their lives.

      my personal biggest problem with Promarker/brushmarker is their size. Because of it, i cannot use it precisely as i want. The body of marker hide the nib/brush from me and i cannt actualy see what i am drawing. Also they are not so comfortable in my hand (personal experience, too bulky for me). This is why i prefer Copic more. But, those white dots on a paper after using copics bugs me too.

    I have been using copic markers for years now, and one the biggest things I will say about them is this: Copics need cardstock, Bristol, or marker paper to function properly. You can use sketch, watercolor, or mixed media paper, but you will notice the pigment separation.

    On a lighter note, THANK YOU for this review. I've always been tempted by the promarkers and far too cheap to want to spend the money for a good variety of Copics. Now I have no doubt I'll be picking up promarkers in the future! 👍🏼I never liked that Copic was so "picky" on most paper. It's awesome to know that the promarkers are good on all paper. 👏🏼

      I think he over sold the paper thing. I much prefer Promarkers over Copics, but you shouldnt be using them on "any type" of paper as you will bled them dry pretty quickly if you do. Also they look far superior on marker paper than other types, although I hear what he is saying about texture.
      Edit to add: also it's still not a fair point to make. They are made to be used with a certain type of paper, which Promarkers are also, even though they are more versatile A fair test would be to use the proper paper they were intended for. It's like comparing a Ferrari to a range rover and testing them on an off road track, its not using them how they should be to get a fair result.

    Promarkers are overly saturated and ink levels are difficult to control. I’ve used every single marker out there. You’re used to the way promarkers flow is why you’re seeing pigment separation. Copics are meant to be applied in lots of layers, it’s like watercolor ( Copic ) vs acrylic ( promarkers ). If you go over the same area a bunch of times with a translucent color like the light green, it creates a pool and starts to dissolve Into itself. You’re expecting it to get darker like a promarker but it won’t, it isn’t designed to. It’s doing exactly what it’s meant to do. You have to wait for it to dry then add another layer and when it isn’t dark enough, you go one step up. That’s why there are 358 colors. This is one of the greatest strengths of Copic and you’re experiencing it as a flaw simply because you aren’t used to them. Keep using the copics. Commit to 15 high level drawings, and watch some really in depth tutorials before giving an actual opinion. You’ll never want to use anything else. I used to use promarkers and chart packs and after fully committing to copics, they all feel like fancy Crayola to me now. I use them on sketch paper, copy paper, vellum, Bristol, canson. They out perform every other marker. After 20 years of using every marker ever made, there’s nothing that compares to Copic. Promarkers are student grade. Copics are for professionals. When it comes to architectural renderings, landscape sketching, industrial design, things like glass, water, thin fabric, etc etc, you want a fast stroke that lays an even translucent layer that you can go back over. Its literally a few seconds with a Copic, but difficult altogether with a promarker. It’s not so important in comics. You should try Chart Paks, they’re extra juicy, you would probably love them. Or Add Markers

      This. This. This. I also felt like he didn’t really know how to use copics to their full potential and this video felt pretty biased towards pro markets. Copics are the best markers in the market and there is a reason why they’re the professional standard. I started out with pro markers also but working with copics is such a smooth experience and they’re so forgiving if you know what you’re doing.

    • @Eaglesnest1
      @Eaglesnest1 3 роки тому +3

      Yeah to be honest it did seem like he was pretty biased throughout the video simply out of his comfort level with the 2 brands, though he did seem to be giving it a more fair chance by the later end of the video.
      I started using both Copic Sketch and Promarkers in early high school and after becoming comfortable with both, I can 100% say that Copic is superior. I’ve used 4 different brands over the years and Copic, despite the high price, has always lasted the longest and was the most versatile.
      And that’s not to say that there’s anything majorly wrong with Promarkers or any other brand for that matter. I’ve seen tons of professionals using multiple brands at a time. For me its always been about quality and Color choice, regardless of price, and there is no one marker brand that has it all.
      Recently I’ve turned to Master’s Touch in last few years for my more vibrant and saturated colors for certain drawings, despite my misgivings regarding their ink formula, and honestly it out performs Windsor & newton by a lot. If the ink wasn’t such a pain sometimes in how it builds up and makes the marker caps stuck on like super glue, I would say that Master’s Touch is the best Copic Alternative.

      I agree. Copic markers need to be layered

  • @lotusdragonjbh
    @lotusdragonjbh 3 роки тому +1

    Aaah, a fellow promarker Connoisseur. I started off with touch five markers , but the day I caught some promarkers on sale at a hobby lobby three years ago, it was a dream. I didn't know markers could rival my love of colored pencils yet here we are.
    I full on like their ink more than copic inks and their pricing is far more agreeable. I just WISH that prpmarkers had REFILLS. But I know the company isn't gong for it and it will jack up the prices. But man, I can go on ANY paper and have even clean strokes with no splotches. Nice coating. Easy layering. No streaks. I have mostly bullet nibs but their brush nibs are okay, a tad soft but still nice and affordable. I have 127 and they serve me fine. Just divine. Cept they die on me sometimes.
    As for the copic, I have copic ciao , exactly 158. The ink is blotchy and spity no matter what paper I stick it on, I haven't bothered to buy exclusive copic paper because they are already charing ridiculous prices for the markers including the reboot refills that are arguably a ripoff. They are fresh and yet they go on kinda slow and dry. I need to layer for more for the copic than I do for a promarker, which is a con for me because it takes longer. While they are slightly easier to blend with and I really like their affects so they aren't a pointless investment, it is still possible to refill them and I really like their brush tips. This the perfect firmness, I must insist I don't like the inks behavior.
    While I prefer promarkers, I use my copics and promarkwrs together on many pieces, the copics a d often good for shading and base layers. While the copic are good for detailing , gradients, and general blending and further renders. The inks are pretty compatible when combined, I found. And the colors each set has fill in the values/colors I'm missing from the other. Basically I have qualms with copic but they have their perks. Sad part is that I used to really want these as a kid, I'm still happy with them but I have my critisisms.
    But if people want brush markers that have refill but aren't AS expensive as copics, I suggest blick studio markers in the 96 set. I also suggest art n fly markers as they are pretty nice and they also have refills and it won't eat up your wallet. I think a full set of art n fly markers comes in 72, they have it on their website. Oh, another one i know of are the spectrum markers (noir, illustrator) , they also have refills available. Lastly , the Shinhan touch markers (not touch five ) are refillable. But lats i checked they were so expensive , you might be better off with copics.
    Ohuhu has nice brush markers in a lot of colors but they aren't refillable as of yet. Thats my thoughts.

  • @asheranna
    @asheranna 3 роки тому +14

    That speckling will occur on all paper types. I have never tried winsor and newton brush or promarkers personally. It's usually when you reach so many layers, of course thicker paper usually takes more layers than copy paper. It even happens on Xpressit Blending Card. So I don't think it's the paper, it's more than likely the ink which is crazy since copics are so expensive.

    • @Vengurl09
      @Vengurl09 3 роки тому +1

      it does happen I agree but with a better paper it would have happened a lot less

  • @mybecember
    @mybecember 3 роки тому +6

    I currently live in Japan so I get my copics here cheaper than anywhere else and I am using their blend card to do my artwork
    Paper I used before used to bleed like crazy and layering wasn’t that great until I bought the blending card
    Also, another difference between the ciao and sketch markers is that ciao has less available colours compared to sketch
    But if you have y17 in ciao you will find the exact same y17 for sketch
    Overall I have to agree with your assessment, the pro markers are better because you will get more colours (if not the whole set) whereas you will have to choose for copic
    I can’t remember if you compared the pro markers to that Huhu marker set, but that could be another interesting comparison because if memory serves, that brand of marker is also quite cheap and have been rated quite highly
    Thank you for doing this piece/experiment!

  • @nitrousbrio906
    @nitrousbrio906 3 роки тому +10

    It's all up to personal preference at the end of the day. Copic markers are industry standard and great. And the pro and brush markers are also great. Personally I prefer Copic cause with refills it ends up being cheaper where I am but the pro and brush markers are also great. I have personally used Copic markers on all paper types and I have found them to work great but I definitely will say that on some cheaper paper they do not get as flat of tones but that doesn't matter to me personally. I use Bristol board and they work perfectly with what I use.

    Great video, love the artwork! I use both pro markers and Copic markers and honestly the main difference is only the price point. For most artists paper is always a factor and most artists will choose the paper that suits the what’s they’re using. You don’t use copy paper or regular paper with watercolors right. Both are great sets and as you proved, both can give you excellent results. Overall great video.

    I have Copics and I have to say I think part of the problem you had with blending the green was the lightest green you used. The G000 is the second lightest green marker they make (the lightest is G0000) and I find that using it to try and blend greens that aren’t as light as it is causes a lot of trouble and causes the colors to separate. It would be interesting to see how it would have come out if you had had a green that was closer in color to the others.
    That said, I really enjoyed the comparison and hearing your thoughts on the two brands!!

  • @TechnoBris

    I love the look of the results, I think especially considering the cost there's not much reason to choose copics over promarkers, so it makes sense to get promarkers.

    Considering there are shifts in the promarkers partly masked by the color choices and years of practice that leads to developing techniques that help avoid leaving the unpleasant splitting so obvious, it leaves one to wonder how much would change on the copic side if they were more frequently used to develop the same types of adjustments in use to get the desired results. Granted, that still wouldn't alleviate the price issue, but it's a curiosity thing.

    I own both Copic and Promarkers, and I totally vouch for your statement about the latter being much more applicable to all kinds of papers. I find myself using Promarkers more to color on my coloring books with varying types of paper.
    I do want to point out that your art style, which is very cartoon-y and graphic, is not really in line with the intended use of Copics, which is meant for manga and illustration, where they tend to go for a more softer, painterly look most of the time, hence the slower ink flow. Promarkers on the other hand, are designed precisely for graphic artists who value good color payoff, even application and bright, distinctive colors.

So far as I know, no one has tested the brands against each other for who can outlast, and are they consistent on flow throughout. Maybe that could be an upcoming challenge?
