- Without darks, you won’t get the contrast to make your watercolour paintings sing with excitement and energy. But reach for a tube of black and it can suck all the life out of your painting.
So what’s the answer? How do you mix vibrant darks from your existing palette?

Thanks so much for simplifying black mixing so brilliantly.
glad it helped 😊
This was fantastic Liz! This older video popped up on my feed. So VERY pleased I watched. The purple and green - not a yellow was utterly new to me, and I shall be making notes. Listening to a longtime professional artist is one of the very best ways to learn when not attending art school, or as in my case, getting a bit long in the tooth to be starting 🫣😳🤷♀️🖌️👩🏻🎨🎨❤️❤️
It gives me great pleasure to share what I’ve learnt!
I was scribbling notes like mad! Ha ha FUM BUM! I hope my late comments don't bother you, I'm always late to the party (Beginning painter at 53!) but comments are supposed to help give your analytics a boost in the algorithm. You're so good that I'd love you to have a larger audience! ❤️
I love getting comments and the joy of UA-cam is that things are evergreen. on the down side it does mean things are still around if you’ve changed your mind or learnt something new!
Thank you for sharing your expertise. You are a good teacher and am fortunate to have found your channel.
You are very welcome and it’s nice to have you here!
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing
Brilliant, thankyou for an excellent explanation and demonstration. I can't get enough of your videos. I am learning so much.
I really appreciate your comments and feedback too x
This video was so very helpful to me as I was having trouble making lively blacks. Thanks for the info.
so glad it helped!
Ahhh I learned something new: FUM+BUM & it’s a great dark color. So there’s no yellow to mix with purple to get a black or darker color. Oh wow, now I’m interested in mixing up more color combinations to see what colors I will/can get. Thanks for sharing this wonderful informational video with us!
Have fun. I am sure you will discover your own favourites!
Wonderful! Very helpful. So glad i found you!

Thank you very much, Liz. I learn so much from you. These color mixing lessons are just great!
I'm so glad! I will do one on skin tones soon (I hope)
Wonderful Liz! Thanks for sharing this very useful information. I now have some new mixes to make the darks in my painting.
Great! There are lots of possibilities, but exciting darks make for exciting paintings!
Liz..have you tried Frisk artists’ sponges? They do a marvellous clean up job at removing paint stains from plastic palettes
Are those like Magic Eraser? If so, yes I do use them but not with success on palettes unfortunately
Thank you for another great color mixing lesson. You are a great teacher and very generous sharing so much valuable information.
You are so welcome! I really enjoy doing these films, so I’m glad they are useful.
Thank you! I learned to mix black from blue and burnt sienna a while ago, and from aliz and viridian, I have an old paintbox that has real viridian in it, but the purple route is a new one form me. And you are such a lovely teacher!
that’s good to know. so many people reach for black instead of mixing. and lucky you having some of the real stuffed!
2:08 🥰 all of our hands look just like yours
I'm not happy if there isn't ink under my nails!
@@LizChadertonArt 🥰 exactly!! clean hands mean i haven’t painted in a couple of days and that’s unacceptable ❤️
😍@@pupawupagus
Really useful, thanks Liz. BTW, I’d never heard of ‘fumbum’ before but I’m sure I’ll never forget it now!
I think being the mother of two boys, anything with bum in it makes me giggle!
What paper did you use please
Hi, I usual use Bockingford Not/Cold pressed. It's really economical but a great consistent quality and takes a lot of abuse even though it is not a cotton paper
@@LizChadertonArt thankyou
