I-66 Express Lanes Grand Opening

The 66 Express Lanes opened ahead of schedule on November 22, 2022, and are the central part of VDOT's Transform 66 Outside the Beltway project. The project has transformed Northern Virginia's I-66 into a multi-modal corridor with faster and more reliable travel choices. The project features 22.5 miles of new express lanes (two lanes in each direction alongside three newly paved general-purpose lanes), with dedicated express lane ramps and space reserved in the median for future transit, as well as safety and operational improvements at key interchanges and auxiliary lanes between interchanges, new and expanded commuter bus service, a shared-use path that is parallel to I-66, and new bicycle and pedestrian paths and connections.
