Exactly! Just found this and I just turned 60. Always wondered where the mixer bands, like Moby that uses this tune, invented their freeky tunes. Cheers!
Possibly the best piece of songwriting I've ever heard. She put hundreds of years of the African American woman's experience into this 8 minutes of art. Do you hear the passion, the hurt, the yearning in her voice? Truly powerful Marlena Shaw, ya sallam Queen x
@@bwesley26 i have to say i am as white as can be , and surely i wontbe able te feel it like black folks but this peace is so strong emotional en awesome it kinda comes across . It gives me tearfull eyes everytime
Totally fantastic version. I've seen Marlena Shaw live a couple of times, the first time was in 94. She just blew me away, what presence tottally amazing performance. Some artist cant deliver live. She delivered and some her voice is just incredable. This tune was big back in the late 80's early 90 London Jazz scene, and brings back fantastic memories for me. If your new to Marlena, if you found her through someone else's music, that brillient. Go and discover the other songs and Albuns she's done, She's sung plenty. Youve prpberly heard them on the TV without even knowing it was her 😀.
Hope ur still alive and doing well cuz I want u to know that I'm so jealous that u had the opportunity to see her perform live. 😂 Very blessed to witness it! ❤
Marlena is as good as ANY funk/R&B I've ever heard. Generally it's a field with many fewer men than women, but seriously this song is all that's needed.
Down in Trinidad & Tobago in the early 70s Woman Of The Ghetto was the bomb! it was played everywhere. Sorry about your mom's passing Marla condolences. R.I.P Marlena Shaw you were loved on foreign soil.

What a performance! and what a tune ... I got to see her do this live some time around 2005/6 ... one of the greatest...
I am surprised Miles (Davis- to you young'uns and squares) never sought her out to record with him in the 70's. That would have been EPIC.
