What are the most used instruments in your home studio? Let me know below!
Mostly bass, piano, and guitars. I can’t use a set in my little ole bed room to record them but I’ve always been good at making beats and stuff so programming drums is just second nature and hey I always enjoy your guyses content it has helped me with a lot of stuff I didn’t know. Thank Warren ❤
Definitely my Novation Impulse 61 controller keyboard
Lucky to have the Moog One and some nice guitars, I use them on EVERYTHING. But a decent acoustic, electric and midi controller can cover the essentials at any level.
Good morning Warren! Mine is Banjo, Guitars and Bass as my main instruments I'd feel comfortable playing anywhere. Keyboard, Piano, Modular Synth, and Drums are my fun toys that I'm learning. Love this tour and video, very informative! I love how you're covering all the aspects of home recording now including the instruments...Are you considering doing a video focusing on your systems and tips for songwriting? This would be my biggest request...
You Rock my friend!
Jeez. And I thought the keys department at Anderton's of Guildford was incredible. I could get lost in there for days!!
My setup is Macbook Pro running logic pro x 10.4, Focusrite 8i6 interface, Yamaha Montage 8 as the swiss army knife with Yamaha Reface CS, ASM Hydrasynth Explorer, Roland SE02 and an old Casio CZ101 playing supporting roles. And of course my Omnichord usually run through a Boss ME80!!
I felt like a kid in a sweety shop watching. So much choice, affordable and pretty good quality these days. Great video thanks very much
Haha thanks Joey!
The video was great. I can speak to the fact that electronic drums are not a cheap way to go. I live on the 2nd floor of an apartment and have went through alot to make it work and feel as close to a real drumset as possible, and that does include running my bass drum and snare through compressors, mic pres and even EQ. This sounds ridiculous to most people but it does work. Getting things to a point where everytime I hit my bass drum my neighbors pictures don't rattle because of vibration is a process onto itself.
The BOSS Katana is killer for the money
Thanks ever so much for sharing
Lovely intro, Warren! Haven’t watched the entire video yet but I’m sure it’s gonna be brilliant!
Thanks ever so much Filip!
Haha... well... good morning then.. or? haha.... Great intro!
Haha thanks! Yes, 5am!
Great idea for a video!
Way back in the early 1970s something like that store would have blown our minds to kingdom come. There was no such thing as synths, e-drums or any kind of reasonable and affordable recording gear except a Revox tape machine, where you had to work two summer jobs just for the down payment. There was also no source where you could get the knowledge from like today. We frequently went backstage after concerts and poked holes into the artists asking them about the smallest details. I remember seeing the first full blown Moog modular system on stage with ELP. Keith Emerson was very nice (no pun intended 😂) and tried to answer all our questions, but then finally said: „I play that thing, I don‘t build it.“ 😁
It took almost half a year (and some more concerts) until we had figured out what „VCF“ and „Ring Modulator“ was for. By going through every electronics magazine we could lay our hands on, we were finally able to build our own analog synth using do-it-yourself organ components and our own modules. We even scored some film music with that damned thing. Of course it had a lot of shortcomings and you’d have to patch each sound individually, but it was the start of my buddies career in prize winning movie scoring and film music composition. So it was quite worth the time and effort.
I went down another path, both professionally and musically. I prefered to perform live. In regard to gear I can say, that it always paid to invest a little more and get the better stuff. I still use it today, while the cheaper stuff is long gone. My Guild acoustic is still my number one recording instrument. The Jazz Bass may be old, but you can‘t get anything better today. I went through half a dozen shell sets and snares, but my first Zildjians and Paistes are still there and despite their age of almost 50 years and heavy gigging, they‘re as brilliant as on the first day. The Neumanns may have been a bit pricey, but they were a sound investment, as were the SM57 and SM58s.
One last tip to all with multi-instrumentalist ambitions: Get a looper as soon as possible. Regardless of the music you‘re aiming at, or your instrument choices, or your budget, or your playing level. There is no better way to practice (because it‘s productive and fun), nothing more motivating (except gigging), and nothing more versatile than a looper (like a Boss RC-600 or an RC-505). 😊
Midi synths I control with my Nextar 61 key controller. I'm a terrible keyboard player but tracking with midi allows me to record each hand separately which helps...a lot! Love my Hammond organ, love having two manuals and drawbars but I use synth more and love my VST M1, DX7, Juno 60 and Mellotron!
Love your channel, Warren, so helpful.
amazing collab!
Warren, you have an O'Keefe and Merritt stove, I knew you were a class act! Thanks for the video.
You have a very good eye my friend! Well spotted, yes, incredible stove!
@@Producelikeapro You're right there. We've had 3 O&M stoves, our current one is a "Town and Country", fully restored and a real beauty. Search for "How to Move a Vintage 750lb Stove"
@@CraigHollabaugh great! I'll check that out!
Keyboards: Yamaha MX88, Arturia KeyLab, MainStage. Guitars: I have 19 of them (Gibson, Fender, Squier, PRS, more). Basses: Schecter and Squier. I'd rather have a collection of different sounding budget guitars than to have one really expensive PRS. A Squier Strat for $200 will still sound like a Strat in a recording. Also, HX Stomp is amazing, but there are many semi-inexpensive solutions out there. Great topic!
I bought a 6.5 Supra for $120 discount, timed when year-end sales quota's looming, so AFTER Dec 25 & BEFOR NY. 👍 Picked up a 5" Supra for next to nothing from a school who considered it 'damaged' HA! - About 3 hrs and some mechanical know-how and viola! Last but not least, the Pork Pie BOB is a KILLER brass snare that rivals it's more famous counterparts for less than half the $$ ...catck one on sale, you won't regret...
After many years of try outs and buying right and (many) wrong stuff, i settled my mini home studio on the following: acoustic guitar by far the best value for the money ive ever found was a Sigma DMC-STE, looks, feels and sounds like a Martin for about 300 bucks. Electric guitar if you can have only one i would go for the Ibanez AR series with the Tri-Sound switch, very versatile-do-anything type of deal for about 550 bucks. Bass either the Yamaha TRBX305 or Ibanez SR305, those two basses will literally produce any sound you could possibly imagine while costing less than 500 bucks. Native Instruments Studio 2 interface, much better than the overhyped Focusrite Scarlett imo. Ive had a few midi keyboards and settled for the NI M32 for no particular reason other than that i use a lot of NI plugins, but i feel like midi controlers are very personal. Daw wise i use Reaper but could also settle for Studio One or Cakewalk. Beyerdynamic DT990Pro headphones, Rode NT1A + SM57 mics. Monitors wise ive done Presonus Eris 5 XT and also Eris 3.5 with the Eris Sub8. Both setups go for exactly 300 bucks and will work just fine. The 3.5 + Sub works a lot better than i expected and even though i dont produce electronic music, thats the setup i settled with. I felt like the smaller 3.5 speakers matched my small room better than the 5XT and having the Sub to compensate for the low-end just complements the 3.5s really well, specially when you activate the highpass on the sub before the signal goes to the 3.5, you would be amazed how good that setup sounds, and the Sub8 being able to go all the way down to 30hz will leave no frequency unchecked. No need for anything more than that for a basic home setup....the rest (amps, drums, synth, etc) i just use plugins/software....this list goes for about 2500-3000 euros including the cables and some basic sound treatment for the walls and youre set...
I have a couple of Midi keyboards but the Nektar 25 key is my favorite. Too many guitars but my Rivolta clone that I built (2xP90) is my main guitar. My Yamaha bass and EZ drummer 2. Luna, Reaper, UA Apollo and Scarlett Solo.
Loved the video, I wish I had such a big store (even a big city Sweetwater) in Israel. as a bass player my 2 cents - there is a lot more going on in the cheep/affordable basses than Squire/Fender/Steinway, Sire/Sadowski/Harley Benton/Ibanez... to name some, much better value for money IMO. I have A JP 1980's Fender Japan JB special, 6 string Ibanez (with GTK midi pickup), Sire v9 5 strings fretless (with GTK), and Sire V7 J-bass, I find myself using the Sire(s) 95% of the time. I also have a few basses in storage - Steinway 35 (5strings), a cheep Fender Mexico, and a few nameless, which I'll donate when I'll find the time and right purpose. Also the most important thing for a preforming bass player is Pre-AMP/DI regardless of the amp, and in my case (this can change for diff styles) is SansAmp bass driver DI, this is kind of a classic, but there is a lot going on here, including some preamps that can be used as headphone amp as well.
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Yamaha is the star of the show on this video lol loved this
Haha I suppose so!
Ya lost me at tea rather than coffee. Hahaha
Nooooo! Haha I do like coffee, however, I love a good cuppa tea!
Thanks Warren, that was an awesome gear information video 👍
Thanks ever so much
Great video! Kid in a candy shop!
My most used instruments must be my guitars (as a guitar player). But I also play some bass guitar and even have the TD-1DMK from Roland. I'm not a great drummer, but it is great for home recording and triggering addictive drums. You can get really nice results and it's so nice and small that I have more room for more guitars and amps!
I-need-that-Pultec-mug.
You can buy one on their site I believe.
My acoustic is a Simon and Patrick luthier guitar, it was only I think £300 maybe £400 and I absolutely love it. Feels so good to play, sounds phenomenal and records great also. Everyone who plays it loves it and have never heard of it for some reason. I have to agree with the Zildjian Ks that’s the reason I got them, I wanted cymbals I could use for pretty much anything as my first pair of “real” cymbals so I invested in them. They were about £900 odd but they’re ridiculous. Now that I have them I will expand with more but I’ve only just finished paying them off 😂
My kit is a Natal cafe racer which is tulipwood and the shells retail at around £999 depending on the set up but I highly recommend them. Not just because I have endorsement but it’s the kit I wanted before I got endorsement and I was very lucky to get the deal, they have me a chance so very grateful. It’s another option for people who wanted an amazing pro quality drum kit and sound without breaking the bank
That 88 keys M-audio keyboard he is talking about; I still have mine, haha... GREAT midi keyboard and I still use it every day.
The most used items in my home studio - I have an ATV ad5 kit with a Pearl Mimic drum brain, my main basses are a Warwick 4 string and a Warwick fret less, main guitars, Washburn semi hollow and a peavey 3 pickup Les paul copy, and my MAudio oxygen midi controller.
nice vid! hey... how about a video dedicated to a detailed summary of what warm sound is. Like when engineers say "now lets warm it up" or the talk of hardware plugins and software plugins adding warmth to the signal. That would be spiffy!
Ha ha ha ! This is the best Disneyland that a musician can go to 😂😂
Yes! Indeed it is
i just bought a physis k4 ex master midi controller. best midi controller keyboard since my roland A70 and A80. the new breed of midi controller can't hold a candle to these in terms of build, design, features....everything infact
Yamaha yc88 and cp 88 are great keyboards
Hey! good job here as always. My go to synth in the studio is minilogue xd, I love it! Guitar is a Gretsch and acoustic is a takamine. Not the best instruments in the world, but that's my rig, and I love it!🤘🏾
Thanks ever so much for sharing
You mentioned about the maudio midi controller. Its called an oxygen model. I have an axiom air 49, roland system 8, yamaha motif 8 and xf6. I have a roland vdrums i bought back in 2008, and a mac book pro with all kinds of soft synths, drum samples, effect plugins and a few daws.
putting the kettle on :D
YES!
@@Producelikeapro "...The kettle almost boiling, ... And the poet lifts his pen, While the soldier sheaths his sword"
I have some keyboards at home, but surely I don't own a Pultec tea cup!
Most used device is a Yamaha Montage7 connected to a MacBookPro M1.
It is used mainly as midi controller and audio board, more and more wonderful VSTs are preventing me to use Montage internal sounds.
I would kill to be as accomplished as our guitar player friend Warren!
You're far too kind my friend!
The most important piece of equipment for any studio: a kettle to make a nice cup of tea! 🫖 😀
Very well said!
I have a Strat, a Les Paul and a Variax, but my most played guitars are two telecasters I made myself. One with pretty standard pickups with a P90 at the neck, and the other with two mini hum buckers. The others rarely come out of their cases. My keyboard is a very old Roland small keyboard with full size keys which I mainly use as a midi trigger for virtual instruments. The internal sounds are very dated. I then use a Roland TDK17 drum kit with Superior Drummer which is amazing. This all goes in to Studio One. I don’t like midi bass so I use a cheap (but great value) Yamaha bass guitar. My recording amp is usually with a Positive Grid Spark which is really quite amazing with a Shure SM57 in front of it. My acoustic is a Crafter which sounds nice but not the best for recording. I don’t like using active on my bass guitar, it tends to spike and clip, even though the level is set low, so I turn it off and use it in passive mode.
Absolutely adore my JX-08, would love the JU-06a, but at only 4 voices it's a tricky sell (also, not bi-timbral like the JX-08)!
Thanks ever so much for sharing!
Mmmmmmm Tea !
Yes!! PG Tips
@@Producelikeapro No other tea like it. I am drinking a cup of now.
Salam hhh i love this vid like the others
Thanks ever much!
My Novation Impulse 61 is the most used instrument in my studio. Warren would really love to see you record with an electric drums just to see how you use it and mix it too
I second wanting to see an electric kit being implemented in a project.
how about Kawai? they make acoustic pianos. better action on their digital than a Yamaha.
@35:10 can anyone tell me what make and model that blue and surf green guitars are. That’s exactly what I’ve been looking for. Gretch? Gibson epiphone?
Proper tea .... Is it Yorkshire?
At 14:40, after suggesting studio one, he says to get the "complete select". What is that?
Unfortunately I don’t know Studio One so I can’t answer that.
That’s not mike, that’s Tom Segura 😂😂😂
Yamaha yc88,Gibson ES175,
Amazing Joe! Always good to see your comments my friend
😊
Thanks ever so much!
My latest addition to my bedroom/studio is a Yamaha CP88. It's their take on Nord's stage piano, with half of the price tag.
The piano and electric piano sounds quite good. The action is also good as well. They do not have instruments loading/unloading like Nord but each update comes with new sounds. Also non-piano instruments sound ...meh.
Yamaha also have an organ counterpart, the YC88.
Given your relationship with Yamaha, why don't you ask them for one for a review (and perhaps a giveaway lol).
Other than the fact they keep referring to $800 gear as “budget”, a decent video
So far, all but one of the ads UA-cam has put in this video have been for Full Compass 😆
Edit: The final tally was 3/5 of the ads were for Full Compass.
Aha! I have never got those ads, they are shown based on your viewing habits. Did you ever click on a Full Compass post?
@@Producelikeapro I’m reasonably certain I’ve never click on an ad of theirs, but I’m much less certain that I’ve never watched one of their videos.
I just thought it was funny… like if someone made a video about all the great stuff at Staples and OfficeMax said “oh, yes, let’s show _that_ group a lot of ads!”
@@OtherTheDave haha indeed! I always get kids videos because my kids watch form my youtube account ha
Kettledrums and a Mellotron.....the big one.

Are we just not gonna pretend like those iLoud Precisions aren't staring at us the whole time?! Tell me there's a review coming!!!
Haha very soon indeed
I think warrens talking about the M audio oxygen?
Yes!! That’s it! I still have it somewhere
An old Yamaha PSR 36
Hydrasynth. That is all.
Why didn’t they just have someone follow them with the phone so they could play the instruments? Can you make that suggestion for next time?
Hope you took the teabag out BEFORE you put the milk in!😂
Of course! Haha
@@Producelikeapro it wasn’t clear from the footage🤣
it doesn't really matter

This could have been such a great topic if it wasn't just a sweetwater commercial.
Steinburg UR242
My recommendation is go to Thomman and buy something that’s not American. Yamaha, HB, Arturia, Korg etc. I got a bass hand made for less than that Stingray
ha - just as in real life - bass has the shortest segment and least to talk about... 🥴
26:27 Dude keeps calling $800 guitars "$700 guitars." lols
32:00 skipping past the J Mascis Jazzmaster. Whoops.
Absolutely loved Ryan´s honest approach! What happened to the Focals, Warren? @producelikeapro
Still have them!

Haha Thanks ever so much Mac!
Did you run out milk?😕
Haha no! I make it with Almond Milk which isn't very thick so the Tea remains dark!
Entry level....yeah only $700 LOL....Honestly....Where are the Epiphones, Washburns, FG's....Sorry just another guitar salesman waffling....Our daughters first Washburn was a Solid Top for £160! New from PMT....I stopped watching after that....
Yeah, agreed. “Budget” being $700-$800 is crazy. They’ve lost touch with the real world. My “good’ guitars are £800 lol
I buy everything through sweetwater. But why are they so awkward? Just wanting to stir the pot. I can’t really say I’d do any better in their shoes. Haters gonna hate.
