  • A review for those who are considering Red Wing. Their quality has fallen through the floor. Their after sales is appalling! These boots were apparently made by a guy with only one hand, that missed a few fingers, and had arthritis. Dominik Hoegger (Red Wing's top guy) pretty much goaded me!

The option is to buy a good quality Chinese Moc Toe which does not pretend to be a Red Wing by 1/3 the price of the original. Al's Store or yuanweixieshu Store, for example.

I agree that the stitching isn't ideal, but these soles are glued on, not stiched through the west. So you can just, glue another sole on. No need to touch the welt. I have the same boots and there's a small thin rubber midsole so his main argument. Isn't accurate. I do believe that the quality has recently gone down, but they are also hand made! People have got way too used too machine made perfections which have very small tolerances and aren't used to boots being hand sanded like this guys other complaint.

I had the gap in the welt that looked like a gash too so sent them back and a pair where. I wasn't happy with the stitching so sent those back and a pair of oro's that were much darker than the rest so sent those back. Also some you could see where they'd glued the moc down and didn't line it up that well. I'm thinking of giving up and getting some Grant Stone (Chinese made but impeccable QC apparently) or Truman. For a £300 boot I expected very good craftsmanship. I find better QC on £50 Clarks. Then you get the fans saying 'they're work boots - get over it'. To be honest you should have sent them back in the first place before wearing them - most places have 30 day returns.

They are hand made so yes not every boot is going to be perfect and they may have slipped threw the quality control, but I never had a problem returning boots back to a Redwings store. I wouldn’t mind hearing Dominick’s side to the story because there’s always two sides and for you not to get your money back you must have walked into the store threw them on the counter in a very but hurt way then walked out. You should just go buy a pair of heritage Doc Matins made in England 😂 “so they claim”.

    4. soles a bit tapered in
honestly you sound ignorant. I can agree about point #3 - it is indeed an issue, but everything else is a result of hand work instead of machine-robot work.
you are nitpicking. Why would welt width matter to you so much ?? it can be easily fixed during resoling when time comes.

    1. Just you’re familiar with how the department of labor’s laws in America work on American made goods. By law, in order to have a tag on it that states MADE IN USA, it has to contain at least 75% of American produced materials, and labor in its production. So those are indeed genuine USA made Redwing boots. China made, they can’t afford, or will not use the quality, or thickness, of leather on the uppers, nor would it have a genuine leather Goodyear welted construction. The heritage line also uses a genuine leather insole, which Chinese made boots will most certainly never use they use plastic instead. I own 8 pairs of Redwing boots, and have over 10 years of buying, and wearing experience, with Redwing USA made boots, so I know the ins and outs of the construction of there USA made boots. I strictly, and religiously only buy from Redwing’s USA made boots line, which at this point still maintains 70% of their entire product line. I can tell you where the leather was tanned, I can even tell you what gender of cattle they source their leather from. I can tell you how the boot was stitched together, and what kind of stitching machines they use to stitch the boots together. All USA made boots, use US born, and raised steers, instead of cows. Because steers DNA structure yields thicker, tougher hides, to make thicker tougher leather. The leather is tanned at the S.B. Foot Tannery company in Redwing Minnesota, which is 1 mile from the main Redwing Shoe company factory. Redwing Shoe Company owns the tannery so they are in charge of the quality of the leather that comes from there. Most of their leather cutters have at least 30 years of experience. The entire boot is manually stitched, with stitching machines that are in excess of 5-0 years old and older, because new machines can’t stitch the leather together as well, or as strongly with the thread they use. They physically repair these machines in house, by their own mechanics, with parts they have to machine in house, because parts are no longer available off the shelf to repair the machines, so it’s true old world US craftsmanship. The triple stitch you see that runs along the sides of the shoe that forms the main seem between the vamp, or toe to the upper, is created by a stitching machine called the Puritan stitching machine. This is a highly specialized leather stitching machine that uses a triple chain stitching pattern, where the thread goes through a vat of liquid wax, to lubricate the thread as it goes through the machine, and into the layers of leather. The wax also locks the stitches in place once the wax dries, and if you look closely at the stitches, you can see the evidence of this, you’ll see dried wax all along the stitching. This method, has been time proven for over 90 years in quality heavy duty shoe construction, to be the best most durable stitch possible for a shoe or boot. And these stitching machines are ran by stitchers with at least 25+ years of experience with the Puritan stitch machines. 2. Your so called flaws you pointed out, failed to meet Redwing Shoe company’s strict quality control requirements to justify replacement of the shoe. All of what you pointed out doesn’t inhibit the performance, or durability, or wearability of the shoe. These are simply slight cosmetic flaws, that are actually quite normal in a hand made product. The welt gap is normal, it’s a leather welt, it will usually always have a gap where the two ends come together, that’s just part of the process, it’s not going to come apart, or leak, the welt is stitch onto the boot from underneath, that’s what actually holds the whole boot together. The top stitch of the welt, is used to hold the midsole of the boot to the upper, which is what the outsole is attached to. That stitch doesn’t in any way hold the whole boot together only the bottom welt stitch does. So if you don’t want them I’ll gladly take them off your hands. I know they’re genuine, and I know there’s nothing wrong with them, and Redwing knows they’re genuine, and nothing wrong with them. In order for them to be genuinely flawed to justify a replacement, you would’ve had to have a major problem like, a seam failure, a sole falling off, or a hook or eyelet pulled loose, that would justify an equipment failure that caused the problem, or human error that caused the problem, which the human error ones, would be caught before the price t makes it off the line, or even before it leaves the station, where the problem originated.
