I met him in high school in the 70s. I got to watch him perform live and talked to him for a while afterwards. He inspired me as a trumpet player.

The question I ask every now and then is: How did Bud differ from Maynard or even Bill in sound in a live performance? All of us can listen to their records, but it would have been a real treat to had been privy to hear both Bud and Maynard LIVE!

@@TRUMPETSIZZLE I saw them both live around the same time frame. Our band teacher took us to see them. If memory serves me, Bud was missing half a finger on his valve hand. He played the piccolo, 4 valves faster then anyone I've ever known. That was like 47 years ago. I also met Mike Vax who came to our school. We got to see him live. I bought what I believe was his 1st album. Use to practice to it. From what I remember of Maynard, Bud hit higher notes and was a rock star on the piccolo. Maynard was awesome too, might of had a bigger sound, I can't honestly compare the 2 being that long ago. It was awesome though to meet Bud, we went to someone's home after the concert. We got to talk to him there for a while. Naturally we asked him about what mouth peice he recommended, all 4 of us went to Oakland that week and bought one. I was lead in the high school jazz band at the time. Now that I think about it, I was pretty lucky so see all 3 of those guys back in the day. Bud left the biggest impression on me. I had never seen or heard the piccolo trumpet before that. Bud was lightning fast with the fingers.

The most powerful screech player I have ever heard in person. So sad that he ended it all at a young age….

I never heard Bud in person. Can you give more details on the concert, masterclass, or..? Also, have you heard Maynard, Bill, or Doc live and how does Bud's power and sound compare? Bob Reeves told me Bud was louder than Doc and Maynard and extremely accurate above high c.

How he can play so musically up to a double a is absolutely insane. Thanks Kurt, I never would have heard this if you didn’t put this out there. I am very thankful I did.

@@TRUMPETSIZZLE Please define and give explanations of what a "double a" and "double e" are. Everyone seems to agree on what is a "double high C" is. For example, the E above double high C, is that what you are calling "double e"? When you say "double a", is this the A below double high C? Thanks very much. Much appreciated.

Well, they are lead by the tone 666 Hz (leading tone). There's nothing "Jesus" about this tone. You'll hear it if you listen for it. Why don't musicians learn to play a better sounding resonance?
