    Cotton gives you more shrinkage than poly. So if you like the “antique quilt” look with crinkly cuddly shrinkage cotton is a great choice. Poly maintains it’s shape and has a significantly smaller amount of shrinkage. It will look different than the cotton. It will finish with a more polished look. A consideration for quilting your quilt on a home domestic sewing machine is how well your quilt will scrunch/ roll up in your machine. A thin cotton batting scrunches or rolls tighter than poly. The higher the loft the smaller your working space will be in your machine.
    It’s a great subject that has much more to it than one might think. You are doing a great job discussing with us and showing us the benefits of quilting on a budget! I would never have thought I could score quilting material at the goodwill! Thank you so much for sharing! Looking forward to more of your tutorials.

    Definitely keep reminding folks to go to Goodwill because I have donated a lot of sewing/quilting supplies to them over the years when I clean out my sewing room or when I finish a project!

    I've heard of so many people giving a quilt and the recipient doesn't want to use it - thinks that it should be put away and kept pristine. But I would tell them "Go ahead and use it, and when it wears out, tell me and I will make you another one!" Thanks for your videos and advice!

    One budget friendly option is to use Fleece to replace both the batting and the backing. Since it's a finished fabric, you can use this to back the quilt and it also serves as the batting layer too. It is affordable and comes in a multitude of colors. It is 60 inches wide, so you get a lot more fabric vs. quilting cotton that is 45 wide. It's great for kids and baby quilts. Here is a fun way to do it. Cut the fleece two inches bigger in all directions, quilt your top and fleece together. Then, trim the fleece to 1 inch bigger than the top, and fold that 1 inch to the front and sew it down as your binding. Because fleece does not fray, the edges don't have to be enclosed so you can just fold to the front and just sew it at the edge. (no double fold necessary). To do the corners simply cut across the corner in a diagonal, 1/4 inch from the edge and then those meet to form a corner when folded onto the top. Here is a vid about using fleece for a visual ua-cam.com/video/O8qXtsllRGo/v-deo.html. Here is a site that has fleece ALL the time for 4.25 or 4.50 per yard, and keep in mind it's 60 inches wide!! www.goldendor.com/collections/fleece?page=1 (this store is in my area and I shop in their warehouse, the fleece is top quality but at wholesale price)

    I still don't understand the stitch distance. Does that mean you need to keep your quilting seems 5" apart?

    • @TheQuiltingMarine
      @TheQuiltingMarine  7 років тому +1

      Hey Connie! So with the 5" stitch distance you don't want to switch less than the recommended distance or your risk damaging the batting. You can go more but not less. I hope that answered your question

    • @TheQuiltingMarine
      @TheQuiltingMarine  7 років тому +1

      but stay within the recommended distance otherwise you can get bunching of the batting.
