- Welcome to Unguided, where I'm trying to complete every quest in old school runescape without using a guide, wiki or plugins. I'll only be using my limited knowledge and in-game learnings. Full rules below.

RULES
- No use of OSRS wiki (or any equivalent) for anything - this includes looking up item spawns, quest guides, boss guides, anything
- No use of any other quest helper sites
- No use of quest helper plugin
- Essentially no use of any outside-game assistance
CAVEATS
- I love OSRS UA-cam, I might inadvertently learn something I don't know by watching my favourite content creators, but I'm not going to stop watching them so that's just a risk I'm willing to take + it's unlikely going to be relevant for me
- I may use some QoL plugins, but only a few. Loot tracker to prove grinds, ground items so I don't miss drops (and to add cool loot beams lol) and left click to use bones. Nothing that will give me info I didn't previously have
- I'm going to try and avoid any spoiler comments. If you can, please try not to help me if there's an episode where I'm stuck on something. I appreciate the sentiment but telling me an item spawn or quest step could spoil the fun :)

The bar man says he wont talk to you until you buy a drink. You bought a drink, and now he would talk to you.
Yes. I think the rant was unnecessary, the camp has like 3 NPCs with a couple of dialogue options each, it's not that difficult to figure out. He got impatient and ran back and forth to talk to the archaeologist, then thought that was necessary when the "new" dialogue option appeared and got mad

The thing is, the bartender says that, and then you have an option to talk to him and he will keep talking? like the info he gives you is useless here, but it still dialog making it look like the first bit isnt actually true.
@@exantiuse497 the dialogue he missed from the bartender reinforces that "you've got your drink, now get out of here".
Bollocks. Yeah completely missed that whilst playing AND in editing, sometimes I will misread/not fully absorb a bit of text and that turns out to be the most important few words I needed to see. God that would have saved an agonising hour 😭

LET'S GO. ANOTHER TANGENT ABOUT THE FAMILY CREST QUEST!
I really hope that Unguided lets his annoyance at Avan become something of a running joke for the series. Anytime a badly designed quest comes up, it ends up with another tangent about the Family Crest quest. Absolutely hilarious seeing him break his awe and amazement at runescape lore/story just to go on a rant about one NPC from several episodes ago.
I''m over it personally, feels like we've had a streak of videos where he's annoyed at the quests and it's a bit of a bummer lol
@Zorayah yeah same here especially as this and death plateau are entirely on him and not the quest design
@@JM-mg4el I wouldn't say entirely on him. A normal development team would update your quest journal after talking to the bar man the first time and have it say something like, "The bartender said he refuses to talk to me unless I buy something to drink from him, maybe I should buy a beer."
@@davidedds6562remember this is 2004 and these quests are just one guy editing his own personal copy of the rs codebase before mod ash manually merges everything
@@davidedds6562 This is what's wrong with a lot of modern games nowadays actually, they handhold you through everything and don't give you the chance to learn or figure things out for yourself
The missing step was you talking to the bartender again after buying the beer.
Do ALL the quests feature buying people booze?

Haha I hope you know the comment section is pointing things out because we love you. I'm sorry that this series must be frustrating sometimes, but i hope you understand how much we are all enjoying it. Truly up there with some of the GOAT series

If I remember correctly, back in the day, Jagex had an intern program with nearby universities and some of them were making quests. Desert Treasure was made with assets of a scrapped quest series, the original quests being scrapped because the intern’s ideas were completely bonkers. Including the game teleporting players to the Quest start without the player’s input. A quest giver being the final boss, which was a mess to code back in 2004/5. And a Zamorakian quest boss was meant to shout ‘Allah Allah Zamorak!’
definitely would have loved to see a desert bandit shouting ZAMORAK AKBAR and flying a magic carpet into the pyramid

Yeah this quest is a mess for a reason. Amazing that the internship program that gave us Monkey Madness also gave us this.
@@Salsmachev Jagex actually hated Monkey Madness as well. You see, the internship had a competition for whoever wrote the most lines of code. The intern who made Monkey Madness, who apparently was rather brilliant, won that competition. But there's a good reason why 'less is more' when it comes to coding. And combined that with his code-writing method being a bit confusing to do with Runescript, the quest ended up having a fair few bugs such as people randomly getting teleported to the monkey jail while loitering in Ardougne.
@@kaiserkase3621 Yeah I've heard that the object-oriented coding makes it notoriously difficult to debug. But MM is at least a coherent quest.
Plus, it has subtle Malazan Book of the Fallen references which is an amazing easter egg. Whoever wrote MM was a dork, and I mean that as a compliment.
But what about the Molch pearl grind? That's the truly riveting content I'm here for!

@@MeanderingSlacker He also does not want spoilers to quests he is currently doing, and people can't help but comment them anyway. So a quick way to stop that, is only uploading videos of quests he's finished.

I struggled with this part too. I think this was one the places where I broke my guideless run and had to cheat. The problem is that even after you buy a beer, the bartender tells you to go away and the conversation ends. It's really not obvious that you're supposed to talk to him again, all the indications from the conversation are that you'd get the same dialogue options again. Fixing it would be so simple -- just have the conversation continue after you've bought the beer.
You'd think so, but it might have the side effect of spawning a tbow outside the farming guild

I had to ask my friend how AlienFood's cat wasn't grown up yet. It turns out he's selling them in West Ardy once they're adults for death runes. What episode he disclosed this in, I do not know.

The bartender only tells you the info after you buy a beer from him. He gives you a hint when he says buy something or get lost.

This could be very obvious, but I'm pretty sure that Asgarnia Smith is a reference to Indiana Jones.

There are 2 other NPCs who are named after Indiana Jones - Anna Jones and Orlando Smith.

I love that when talking to Eblis he tell you about the stone structure where Azzanadra is seal. then you ask them if there is a fortress nearby, he says no and that is the part that registers for you.

That start was a real doozy. I cant wait for 2+ episodes for each diamond! This is going to be an awesome 5 hour supercut video of your struggles at the end. Desert treasure has so much jank, because its a repurposed quest from an intern who got fired. Those bandits shouting about Zamorak used to say something a lot more questionable. I love that such an iconic quest has such a crazy developement backstory.
What did they used to say? I can't find anything documented anywhere online that says anything about their voice lines ever being changed.

@@AlienFoodage I don't think a lot of these stories are real but more likely the memories of a 10 year old 25 years ago.
The opening of this episode was by far my favourite out of this entire series. It just keeps getting better. Thank you for suffering for our entertainment!
Dude your uploads make my day every time I see you uploaded, and watching you do osrs guideless is focking amazing i love it, and its funny.
Others have already pointed out, so I won't say anything lol. If anything, it may help, juuuuuust a little bit, to actually read each and every sentence people are giving to you. A bit more diligent and deliberate reading may just help in the future to avoid the annoyance.
Just got absolutely hooked on your series and been bingeing for past couple days and lo and behold… right in time for new episode! Bravo!
This definitely been a series like none other, scratches an itch I never knew I had in OSRS content.
Reminds me of having to do quest without guide for first time ever (Desert Treasure two on release) was beyond hard but the feeling of finishing was like no other, better than all others that I did whilst finishing quest cape! Keep it up brother, see you when you holding your golden gnome 🎉❤!
The best (most unhinged) part of this series is how you bring that cat everywhere despite how annoying the feeding mechanic is lol.
Man i love this series so much lol, it's crazy cause with a guide or quest helper it's so simple, and seeing someone do them all without that just shows the true complexity of the game, lore and it's mechanics but shows how confusing it can be without being guided, and the fact that on a couple quests you found different methods and more lore then if you just simply fallow the guides lol it's just truly amazing
How come you don’t do the part #XX anymore? It could just be a me thing but it made me unsure if this was still the unguided series or a reflection of past events
The youtube algorithm hates numbered videos, and people are more likely to click if they're tricked into not realizing the video is a much later part of a larger series.
Before I came across this series I would have absolutely agreed with you. But this video just popped up in my recommended feed some days ago and I wouldn't have clicked if it said #47. Now I've gone back, watched every prior episode, and returned to where my journey started!
Weirdly, dropping the number is the choice that got me hooked.
This series has really influenced me. I find myself actually slowing down and reading quests on the account im currently leveling which I had no intention to at all and it's been really enjoyable to learn the lore behind all the quests we've completed for years on end. Absolutely loving the series, keep it up!
I agree . tbh I disliked actually doing the large majority of quests but I did and still do enjoy reading the dialogue in them . I love how much of an idiot our character can be sometimes lol

Seems like quests are always very specific and if you deviate from that route you're lost for a while. I like the videos man, please keep it up! I'm enjoying them so much!
The first time you talked to the Barman he said something about buying a drink. So maybe you had to buy/drink a bandits brew 🤷♂️

Man I don’t even play OSRS and I hardly know what’s going on half the time but I’m entranced by this series- you do a great job of explaining things that keeps it interesting and engaging and gives me some semblance of understanding, though I am sad I’m fully caught up now and I have to actually wait for new episodes 😭

I think from family crest PTSD you're instantly assuming its some convoluted order of chat dialogue but if you just slowed it down a bit you would have solved it immediately, pre family quest unguided would have instantly figured out the bar man sequence imo

Just got to the part where you asked why you did Defender of Varrack. No idea if you remembered or not, but the reason you did that questline was because you wanted to do as much of the Mahjarrat quest series as possible in order before hitting up Desert Treasure 1. (I was wondering the same a few episodes ago and went back to see the reason why)

Having not done this quest myself yet, i was so convinced that what you needed to do was talk to Eblis, and rather than just go through every dialogue option, ask him about the fortress without having asked about treasure. I'm pretty sure there are a few quests where order of dialogue options does matter like that, but i don't quite remember which (and if i did, i wouldn't say to avoid guiding you).
But yeah, as other comments pointed out, the bartender said he wasn't going to talk to you unless you bought a drink, which you did do, but then never tried talking to him again until you eventually found it by accident.
There are a few ways to get magic logs without 75 wc, and all the guides list them to be done early in ironman journeys just for this quest.
From the writers perspective thematically the bartender makes sense as the person you talk to. But if you miss the dialog because you expect it to standout as special you've already checked them off in your head as 'just a shop npc' and then you're off the rails. You might as well reset and do everything again systematically to brute force things.
Can't wait for Desert Treasure II. Newer quests are better about avoiding bullshit (à la Family Crest) so I try to do them as unguided as I can. However, the grandmaster quests are still absolute beasts and I caved at a couple points. Other youtubers have tried to do them unguided, and I think it took them 8-12 hours? Wondering if you'll be quicker after all this practice.
If you wear an item that is aligned with Saradomin and Zamorak and walk into the pub, you'll be attacked by the bandits who will be aggressive towards you. That's a reference to the fact that Zamorak, his supporters and supporters of Saradomin took part in the banishment of Zaros.
Unguided is my favourite series but this episode felt kinda rushed. Barely getting into the quest, not even mentioning your fishing pet.
Ah well, still looking forward to next week!

people keep saying "omg the bartender tells you to buy something" but really in a town where everyone you talk to opens with "fuck off" the bartender's line about buy something or get lost is so generic it hardly counts as a hint when you can ask him about the quest *anyway* and changes after buying a drink and talking to him again 😭
The way it should be is that he just tells you to buy a drink if you want to chat when you try to ask about the quest.

Episodes ago when you said you were going for Desert treasure 1, I knew you would get stumped on the magic logs. GL as its a hard one, unless you have the level.
I was baffled as to why Jagex would design a character called Asgarnia as it seemed so confusing to name him the same thing as one of their kingdoms. Absent-mindedly paused the video at about 4:18 and the cogs started whirring - archaeologist... treasure hunter... familiar hat, familiar beard, Smith?, Jones!, Asgarnia?, INDIANA!!!
Felt pretty stupid after that.
