Thank you so much! I’m glad it’s useful - even if I don’t like the result myself, I think you can make use of the information of what works and what doesn’t for your own colouring choices🤞 Thanks for watching, Jackie

Sorry to hear your disappointment with this page so far, but it remains a beautiful page and I’m confident you’ll pull it off. I definitely find it useful to learn from your difficulties gives me hope with some of my disasters 😂🤪

Hi, Jackie! It's such a shame that you weren't enjoying coloring Alice, because I certainly enjoyed watching you! The picture positively came to life as you worked on it. I hope you can find a way to color this book that you can enjoy!
    Love from Texas! 🤠 👢

Thank you, it’s just going to be finding the right medium I think, because the artwork really is beautiful. With the right medium it should be quick too - the greyscale does a lot of the work for you once you get it right 👍

Beautiful love your version better. The original just doesn’t do much for me. Gray scale is very intimidating to me. Thanks for the wonderful tutorial. 56:50

Thanks so much! Grey scale is good when you find the right colours and medium…it saves a lot of effort with shading but it can muddy colours and make it a bit dull if it’s not done correctly. Like everything, the more you try it the more comfortable it becomes I think 😉 Alcohol markers usually work well with grey scale, but this paper is too thin and I want to preserve the story on the back of the page if I can.

I have to add, beautiful job. The end result reminds me of one of the old-time photos that were touched up with color. I really dig it actually.
If you're not happy, I'd suggest looking into gouache at some point. It might be easier on the coloring pages as well.

Thank you, it reminds me of old hand coloured photographs too 👍 I’ve not used gouache much but wasn’t too successful with it in the past. I’m thinking that perhaps a watered down acrylic wash might give a better base for the pencils like Dede Willingham here on UA-cam does…I think it’s very much user error so far - the grey scale can be something that takes some getting used and the paper has a lot to do with it too. I will keep trying 😉

Couple of suggestions.. won't save that first page of story but perhaps for the future.
You can photocopy the story side page before coloring and apply it to the back of the finished page to cover the mess. I'd suggest double sided tape for that, glue might warp your page. They make these neat little tape rollers that are very handy.
Prismas can be blended almost like marker, they are so soft they spread across paper like butter with the right technique and tools. This is what I'm doing in my Ivy and the Inky Butterfly because I wanted to ensure it stayed readable as a storybook, and had no bleed at all, but I simply can't color the whole thing traditionally... my hands won't take it. It's much faster than traditional pencil coloring. Lay down your darkest color in shadow areas, you can mix colors at this point by layering if you wish. Feather off the edges a little. Then take either the Prisma blender pencil or a white/pastel Prisma, and blend it out over the white paper. The white/pastel pencil will lighten the color, the blender will leave it the same tone. The blender blends so well it can smudge ink in certain books, test first. I don't know of any other pencil that will do this unfortunately.
You can also try the watercolor pencil/alcohol blender.. I find it doesn't bleed at all on any paper I've tried, including the awful US Amazon paper...as long as I only activate once. You can go in with just a bit of pencil if needed after or not.. I've got more than a few pages that are lovely with no added coloring.
I don't use pastel chalks either, they are lovely but I just can't deal with the mess since I color in bed.

That’s a great idea to copy the text, will definitely consider that. I’m interested to get the Polychromos out and see how I feel colouring with them on the paper too.

Most of the time I begin with the aim to just use watercolour (or watercolour effects with markers etc) if I can….but if I get to a point where I feel it is lacking something, I try to add minimal coloured pencils for detailed areas or extra depth of colour. It all depends on the style of illustration and how I feel on the day 😊 I do plan to finish this on camera but I need a few days till I have a quiet house to myself to be able to do it 😉

Hi Jackie! Ive had this book for a while and have been meaning to get it out to color in it for quite sometime but it never happens, now you’ve inspired me to get it out! Love how you color and your wonderful creativity ! Especially your incredible work with water based markers! I think you are inspiring many of us! I also have an alice book collection and have been meaning to do a video for a while, the hashtag by sabi is also one that has inspired me but I wish it was longer than September! Lol hope you are feeling well ❤❤❤❤

Hey Maia, I’ve got a feeling I will be colouring Alice a lot longer than September - I’ve ordered some new books that I’m waiting on arriving so perhaps I just need to find/create a permanent Alice tag?! I’ve got a few the same as you I think (great minds think alike!) This book is lovely, I’ve just got to find my comfortable medium for it I think 🤔 Healing is slow but steady 🤞 I’m trying not to rush things! Thanks for stopping by, Jackie

Hi Jackie, such a shame you can’t enjoy the coloring. When a paper has no tooth and hates water and even watercolor markers go through the paper, it seems to me this book is not mend to be colored….i think Hamish is restless because you are. If you want to like this book, use the tip from Waymire, to copy the storypage than you can color just the way you like! The Poly’s looks way better than the Prisma’s or Arrtx. The coloring looks great so far. I hope you can find the joy to finish it!

Acrylic wash was my first thought when I saw the struggle with the water. Also, if paper use like that breaking into the spots, I have noticed that working with a bit more opaque water media like Neocolor 2 or Inktense works better. It looks good so far thought but I do understand that this is not the way you wanted to work here😢
