Just a FYI, when using Rustoleum paint you must/should use a catalyst. Yes you can buy and use a catalyst for almost any plain oil base paint. The 2 reasons are because the paint has NO UV protection in it AND the paint is weak and soft after drying...in other words the paint can easily be scratched off with a fingernail. The catalyst has the UV protection in it and the catalyst hardens the paint, plus the catalyst adds a glossier wet look to the final look if you use the Wet Look hardener. Plus the catalyst makes it safer and better to wet sand and buff. Most automotive paint stores sell the catalyst. It'l be around 40-50 bucks extra but well worth it. Oh, and the catalyst will keep the paint job lasting a lot longer. I've painted a lot of cars with it and it will last as long as a $200-$500 paint.
Plus, you can use lacquer thinner to thin the paint instead of acetone if you want. Most paint is dumb. Acetone helps the paint kick faster. Never use paint thinner/mineral spirits...all you're doing is adding oil, runs, and a lot longer drying time plus it weakens the paint. If you're painting black Rustoleum don't paint over grey primer...use black primer. Rustoleum is slightly transparent and if you paint black over grey primer the black will turn to Mud-looking in any sunlight and look like crap. No matter how many coats you put on it.
edit: If you don't have a good spray booth throw some water all around the car on the floor if you want a lot less dust particles floating around and landing on your paint. No such thing as too much water...but not enough won't help you. It really makes a big difference. Paint early in the morning to help avoid bugs because bugs are not flying around yet when it's cold out. Never paint at night because bugs will attract to your lights. Just my experience and .02.
Oops another FYI lol...I personally DO NOT USE any kind of liquid grease/oil remover (spray and wipe) on the project before painting. I know the pro's always say to use it but don't. All that shit is, is just another way for them to make more money, plus if it is not done exactly right it can make your new paint wrinkle. What I do is this: On final sanding I make sure I never touch the surface with my skin or hands/fingers (because all of us have oils in our skin). Then I turn on the fan (the one that sucks out dust) and wipe down the entire project with a clean white cotton like a T-shirt and while I'm wiping I'm also blowing with an air nozzle at the same time. Then I wait a few minutes and come back and wipe the entire project down again with a clean tack cloth making sure I have rubber/latex etc. gloves on. Wait a few minutes (while the fan is sucking more dust out) and right before I paint (the paint is already mixed and in the gun) I wipe it down one more time with another clean tack cloth. I use the cheap hardware store tack clothes. The water is already on the floor (make sure you don't splash ANY water on the project surface!) Water will cause fish-eyes and all kinds of problems so be careful. by doing all this you are actually saving yourself a lot of work later...less wet sanding and buffing and if you're lucky NO wet sanding and buffing...maybe just buffing! My quote is this: "if you slow down and have patience you'll get done faster".
Acetone also levels the paint better. Since it evaporates, large looking orange peel dries much flatter than it looks when first sprayed. An axalta rep told me to always cut up to 5% in urethanes for a better bond and flatter finish. Enamels you can go up to 50% given how thick it is out of the can and how much pigment is in the paint. After doing so I'm sold and will always use acetone. Especially after a few fish eye paint jobs from solvent separation due to solvent separating from the paint taking to long long to dry.
Hi, I’ve got some questions for you. We currently prep and paint our trailer frames with a marine epoxy from Proline. It’s a primer then paint. It cost a lot! We’re looking to try something else but not sacrifice quality. Do you think this would be a good option? I’d love to hear your input on the subject. The trailer will be in the sun and put into water. Anything that’ll help or suggestions I’d appreciate very much. We mainly use black and white.
Thanks!!!
@@RaceMentally I'm sure you're asking GT's...but IMO it's the prep (sanding, cleaning the metal surface) and the sealer/primer one uses that's the key...more important than the paint...plus making sure the sealer/primer is compatible with the paint used. Some paints will just sit on top of the primer and not "meld" into each other and that's why we see easy chips and scratches. Just my .02
@@coherantbliss3483 I was asking you. I’m not paint expert and need some help in the department of paint.
I sprayed some Rust-Oleum last week, dark blue blended with white to make Richard Petty blue. Used acetone as thinner. Looks great, not sure what would happen to the paint if I mixed in a hardner like the MARSON WET LOOK? I sure miss Dupont Centari acrylic enamel was great paint.
Don't forget, you can use a standard enamel hardener in the paint. It really helps with the quality of the cut and buff. I've personally used the PPG hardener with Rust-Oleum black and it really toughens up the paint.
what's about the ones they sell in spray can,,does it give the same result?
My brother used to paint he's cars with rustoleum only. If done right they look awesome. Looks great man.👍🏻

Who needs bondo. When 32 coats of paint is just as good.

If you don't like the man's paint jobs why are you watching 🤷
Homes my 2 cents, thin your paint a bit more, like even a 1:1 so you'll have a bigger fan helps avoid the dry spot in the center of the roof, uses a touch less paint and a better/higher gloss reading.
Also watch your speed and don't do that super quick go over thing you keep doing, it'll fog your final paint and cause more sanding.
What are you talking about he did excellent job some ppl are amazing
I really liked the music choice for watching you paint this.
I’m assuming you are being sarcastic. The music intro is awful and it’s still terrible while he works
Nice ! I've had good luck with rust-oleum . Thinning with acetone is the way to go . Don't know if you've tried valspar oil enamel hardener , it increases hardness and gloss . Tractor supply sells their own brand of hardener , it's the same stuff . Keep the great videos coming !

Hm
Beautiful job! Not sure why so many are surprised or astounded at painting vehicles with Rustoleum, many truck and several car models for years were painted with single-stage enamel. It wasn't until the mid/late 60's that paints started getting fancier.
but it was automotive enamel. I have been a auto painter since laquer was the main paint used. over 35 years painting. cheap auto paint is 10 times better than rustoleum. you can use Nason eurathane with harder for $200. and last probly 10 years if cared for
@@w124mercedes7 where can I buy Nason paint?
Looking good! I don't think anyone will believe this was rustoleum paint after it is finished.
If I didn't see him do it I wouldn't believe it
Definitely won’t, my rustoleum paint came out 100 times worst than his! Great job!
They will after 8-12 months in the sun and weather.
@@ee4231 most people realize that without 2k clear it will fade
@@ee4231 had the same paint on my civic for 3 years now it looks as go as the day it was sprayed. No clear on it either
I just cant bring myself to paint over a dent especialy when I have the knowledge and means to fix it. For me it would be like running a marathon race that is 24miles and then giving up a half mile from the finish line. 98% if u will. If Im gunna go through all that work to sand and paint the roof I would rather fix that small dent than explain to people why I painted over it. All that being said ....you did a great job it looks amazing.
True
Right on brother
Especially gloss black.
A marathon is 26.2 miles
Looks good maybe do the whole car in gloss black
I painted my entire car with Rustoleum spray cans. Didn't bother with a paint gun because I was gonna wet sand and buff it out afterwards anyway. Primer, 2 base coats color, 10 coats clear, then a wet sand and buff to finish her off. NOBODY can tell it was a spray can job. ua-cam.com/video/6Pr0YrRzX28/v-deo.html
Thanks .I wondered if Rustoleum paint could be used for painting a car..Great video.Good job.
That is awesome. When it gets cut and polished, it's going to be spectacular.
¡Saludos desde Costa Rica!
Yup, exactly! I just try to lay the paint as best that I can so the cut and buff wont be hard work
Saludos 🙏🏼
I truly am impressed with your attention to detail. Well done. Peace and prayers
Attention Detail are you kidding me, he has easy to fix dents al over the car.
You remind me if my friend Sergio Vidrio. He was first my employee many years ago. He became one of my best friends honest as the day is long and a hard worker.
notice you holding hose with left hand try.n to keep it out of your work run it up your right arm over your sholder then in left hand. more control over hose. just a thout
That's an excellent tip 👍keeps the hose away from the paint and also the spray gun gets pretty heavy after a while(especially when it's full of paint ). Helps control the distance from gun to panel
I like this guy he’s honest and nice and took his time to film and edit a video for us to learn 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I painted my 2003 Chevy van four years ago with white rustoleum. I’m doing it again. This time in acrylic urethane single stage. The rustoleum looked great and if your not going to hang on to the car go for it
2 coats? More like 6 coats.
I put a minwax outdoor clear over the rust-oleum on my truck, it's been two weeks and is pretty legit. I got a vid on my channel highly recommend for a cheap paint job✌️
Yeah thats a lot of coats
More like 20 coats !! Lol
Getting ready to paint my 89 Dodge Dakota. You vids really help. Keep up the great knowledge sharing!! Kudos my friend!!
Gonna have to try that rustoleum on my Elco. Probably next summer though. Wish I had shop like yours bro. Great footage. Great work. Always look forward to your videos. I gotta say as I work on my car I always go to youtube to learn. Your teachin me alot bro. I rely on a few channels here on the tube & yours is one of them. Stay up GT! THANK YOU!
Hey man I did a 97 Dodge ram truck with rustolium maroon painted it let it set for 3 days wet sanded it with 800 grit sprayed it with clear coat looks like a 5000 paint job great video 👍
Spray the inside of the trunk while you have it apart, semi gloss black. Will make it look like a very well taken car.
You do very nice work. You have a good rhythm to your painting, and seem very patient.
Rustoleum acrylic lacquer spraycan is one of the best out of the can spraypaints out there for full gloss .. Hichem paints are also near identical to Rustoleum just diffrent labelling
Excellent job and we have the key to success, I have painted two cars with rattle can rustoleum and nobody can tell.
My part 4 of 5 series shows my technique using rattle can.
Yeah right...I'm sure the bodywork it top notch too.
Good information and detail mate, good to know from a novices perspective...
Cheers from London England 👍
This looks dope boss! I'm glad you went with the gloss black. It pulls it together. Even before a cut and buff this is looking shiny!
Good job like you said it is an old car no car is perfect but for sure it does look better then it did before.
hhhhhhhhhlllllllllllllhhhhhhhhhvhhhejdgbdefr
Many people don't know rustolem has. Been making paint formeny years,,prep and being able to lay it down gives you a quality job,,,,you got the touchbtother
Nice job with foldable paint keep the good work and content coming 👌 👍 😀 👏
That paint job is top notch. Probably didn't have to polish it either since the gloss came out very professional.
Dude it looks great you just gave me an idea for my pickup truck.
What works very well for rustilium is 4 parts paint, 3 parts acetone, and one part hardener. Drys fast and hardens very well. Much more glossy as well with hardener
What hardner and where can I get it?
@@reowhite4862 It's called enamel paint hardener. Most hardware stores have it. If not you can get it online
@@reowhite4862 Krylon Farm Paint hardener or Majic Catalyst hardener, both can typically be gotten at farm/tractor supply stores.
Damn man that looks good, I bought a can of that jet black Duplicolor today but I’m going to take that shit back and buy the rustoleum.
It takes at least two days to fully dry. I wouldn’t touch it for four. An acquaintance painted his Triumph with rattle cans of this stuff. It looked great but took him a VERY long time to do all the pieces right. Remember, enamel doesn’t like to be sanded at all and polishing should probably wait six months. Next to powder coating it is my choose for all suspension and undercarriage surfaces.
Awesome effort 👌🏽 . Give LVLP SPRAY Guns a try 1.3 or 1.2 mm tip. It levels out more and it suits for a small compressor.much less overspray ,more paint on the job 🙂👍🏽
Nice work... and groovy music.
Your work speaks volumes!!! Great job.

I love this paint scheme. Great job man. I wish you lived closer to NY, I’d hire you to help me paint my corvette.

Going to paint my hood, roof, and trunk with that same paint. Great job Man! That really looks nice!! ✌
Very impressive. I'm going to try it on my 55 chevy. It will look better, and not break the bank! Thanks.
Good job keeping it simple and a good three coats gives cut depth for wet and clear and desert sunfor two weeks looks like a pro
You can use auto paint catylist/Hardner in the paint. Then it’ll dry like auto paint and it’ll cure properly. Do 2 to 1 then add .5 of the catalyst. Get the medium speed. The cheapest stuff your local auto paint supply jobber has brand doesn’t matter.
Looks great! What are you using to keep water from compressor mixing with your paint? Please show what you have and the model number of your paint gun.🙏🏻
I've owned 2 of these mirage enjoyed both of them fun cars ......they are getting kinda rare you don't really see them anymore

Those were more than 10 coats.😂🤣 Thanks for the video. 👍🏿
Looks good, smooth coverage. 👍
Nice video. Now i know what to do with my car. Thanks ! 😊
I bought one of those kobalt guns but have been nervous to use it. Seems like you do just fine with it.
Love the Mitsubishi videos - should be called The Sakura Special 🌸 ( sakura especial)
Thanks, I'll keep them coming! That "Sakura" does sound more settling than the indigestion relief!😄 the flower, not the anime
I don't understand why people use Rustoleum when for a few dollars more, they can buy good quality acrylic enamel or urethane from an automotive store which contains a UV protectant. Rustoleum doesn't. It will fade and chalk up over time. A waste of time and money.
Im just going to assume you've seen one too many videos, but never painted anything!
This is about $20 for the entire car, acrylic is at least $100.. that's not a few dollars more!
Don't you believe in washing your car? Maybe a wax or polish every once in a while!?! Trust me, it lasts longer than you think!
Just don't cone back at me with your "20+ years painting experience". Cuz I just woke up and dont feel like laughing!
@@GTsPerformance TCP Global has a gallon of acrylic enamel with hardener for $109. At an 8:1 ratio, it’s enough to easily paint 2 rice burners.
Spend a little more and do it correctly for better long term results.
I've used single stage paints.. just like I've used base coat clear, and candy paints. Nothing wrong with oil based is all I'm saying. Cheap paint on a cheap car.
@@GTsPerformance I hear you, bro.
Very impressive work. Thanks for sharing. Saludos.
Saludos yo también soy de Puerto rico sería buena idea la del amigo 😃. Pero tengo que decirte que se ve brutal el carrito me gusta 👍🔥🔥👊.
I used a lot of rustoleum.. because I paint a lot of trailers.
Rustoleum..is good paint, and it flows very nice even wit cheap spray guns, you can get really nice results with it. The only problem is the shine does not hold up for long. After a few months it becomes dull as it comes out of the can. Perhaps adding some harder, or putting some kind of clear coat over it, will last longer. Great paint job though!!!
Thank you!
On cars, washing them regularly and waxing them helps keep the shine!
Very good paint on my opinion. You can paint almost any vehicle with less than $50
Easy to use for beginners and very good durability nothing like old classic enamel
Nice contrast with the black and the pepto.
I think the front bumper gives the whole attitude of this car. Once its done.. 🔥🔥
Hey...for a minute I thought you were Cub Swanson the MMA UFC fighter. Good video, thanks for sharing.
fantastic job mate loved the video and music ,blessed .
seeing as how good it Looks, My choice is clear, Gloss Black Rust-Oleum for my Dodge Omni GLH clone!
I think you do a great job brother, I like doing it to keep up the good work God Bless
Looking good bro. Greetings from Oklahoma
In my limited experience Rustoleum gloss black spray paint didn't age or weather very well after I painted the rear wiper blade on our GMC Safari. It turned a dull black after about a year or so. Not sure why but it's kind of made me weary of using it to paint anything that's going to be outside in the sun.
Needs clear to protect from UV
I was wondering if I could use rust oleum on an old vehicle that doesn’t have to be perfect? Thanks for verifying!
Ive been doing it for many years. Rustoleum is about $10 a quart. Sometimes I find them on clearance for $1 each. That's how I painted my Mitsubishi (again) for less than $20
I don't listen to people who say otherwise. If they aren't helping me sand, or paint it for me.. then there shouldn't be any reason for me to care what they think 🤷🏻♂️
@@GTsPerformance As others have said you are getting good results but if you are going to this much trouble to prep and paint seems silly not to fix a few small dents. I have painted my farm tractor with single stage paint and no hardener ... that was a mistake since even a year later it scratches easily. The paint was not Rustoleum but rather Ace Hardware brand.
Please let us viewers know how easily this comes off (or doesn't). Also looked to me when you were spraying roof you might have been starting to get fisheyes? Could that be from oil/wax on surface or was that just an optical illusion?
You did a good job, if you increase the pressure of the gun, it will be even better. I need to increase the Dinar rate.
I used Rustoleum gloss black on my 47 Ford and the other day I was able to put the car outside for the first time since I painted it and noticed that the paint is not black it is actually a very dark brown in the sunlight!
Mon just looking how you laid the black down after it had dried I would have used masking tape to make some patterns then laid a lace sheet over that. Shot some silver paint over that then some flake or metallic. That would have took care of any dents and practice with patterns and Kustom paint job would have went with the pink bottom. Yes work with what you got you don't have to have a whole lotta money to make cool art work.
Excellente buddy..
Love it, even though you didn't fix little dents. 100% better..
Wow, the gloss really makes those dents pop.
Oooh yess! 😍👍

I've painted a couple cars with Rustoleum and they looked good for about a year and a half then the sunshine took it's toll on it.

Acabo de suscribirme Yo soy de la vieja escuela nunca papeles con el plástico estoy mirando estoy aprendiendo con usted Yo siempre papeles con diario
Like how it came out I seen lot of your videos you enjoy painting have you tried adding camulus Japanese dry to the Rust-Oleum have you tried to reduce it with mineral spirits if so what was the mix
👍🏻😎 That gloss black shows every little imperfection. It would have been worth the little extra time to fix those dings IMO. But it's your car, not mine.
Hey man just some tips. Don’t start spraying from the middle Also you’re always holding the gun at an angle. It should be flat with the panel. That’s why you are getting that dry spray because of the angle of your gun.
Buen trabajo bro 👍 keep doing it estoy loco por verlo ya terminado
You've got skills sir that looks great
Nice. I watch a lot of your videos. Wish you'd come over and paint my 46 chevy truck.
it sure beats auto paint prices, those guys that price out car paint should be robbed and see how they like it,looks good and good enough to try on this antique safe
I used white rustoleum on my 99 dodge, it matches perfectly, and its better paint, looks good too.
Im more curious why their are so many pros watching this video... seems to me they already know by the comments.. just saying always more than one way once you learn that then you just started good job brother looks good 😊
That had me in a trance, you’re talented man
Looks good brother, keep up the good works.
Very nice and very thorough. How long do you think this paint job will last please?
A real artist.
Hey GT that rustoleum paint job looks supreme!! Job well done. I still don't know how you do it, I've tried painting my C10 with rustoleum and after the first pass I let it flash for 10 to 15 minutes only to get a bad reaction on the paint and ruined the work. Now I have to do 1 pass and let it sit for 3 days before sanding and shooting the next hand of paint. Maybe you can elaborate on how to.
Try adding a hardener like majic and or japan drier. Without those using oil you have to wait longer.
Can you do a video using gloss black rustoleum turbo paint can?
Just on a old door or hood.it sprays a 10 inch pattern.
Tape skills are dope!
Great job brother looks awesome 👌,, so with the 2,1 mix how long on average does that leave you for spraying like if u were doing something bigger before it starts to dry and leave overspray spots im sorry if this is a dumb question im not a painter by no means and have always had the paint start getting tacky to fast and have always had to wet sand the hell out of it and still it always shows the bad paint job I did lol
If it's a full car.. I usually continue spraying right after the first pass. On this video, I gave it about 10 minutes (since it was just the top), and you could tell the 1st coat was already drying. The second coat took a bit more paint to get it to a full wet coat. But leaving the paint a few minutes will help it stretch out evenly.
Man, that looks awesome! Good job!
What's the mixing ratio you recommend with rust-oleum?
Thin it just enough till it flows out of the sprayer correctly
I subscribed... I just bought a 92 Yukon to build on my channel... Its already black but i want to repaint... Your paint came out good so i am going to do mine the same way
