It is a floating vegetation and it moves around the wind can blow it out and you can takeoff in your boat but when you come back the wind has blown it back in and will choke off your impeller and overheat your boat motor. I live in Louisiana and we have that crap every where lol
This makes SO much sense! Can't believe we hadn't thought of that. That is absolutely what it is. I forgot to mention that the lake doesn't rise and fall at the same time. The water appears and disappears in patches which makes sense for the vegetation to be moving around sporadically. Thank you!

Hope it helps. :)

Thank you 🙏 And yes, we have a compressor kit that we've never used. We didn't realise how bad the mud was until we were in the middle of it all, and by then just wanted out of there. We love to watch you guys travel . My 13 teen year old , we watch you guys together. It's the only time he stays put, lol. Nice driving in that rain and mud. 😊
So fun to see you enjoying SMA. We lived there in 2016 and loved it - going back for a visit in a few months and so excited to see the place and visit friends. Glad you had a fantastic time recalibrating! And there is indeed a coffee table book of photos of many of the gorgeous doors!
Oh wow! It's one of the only places we've been to on this entire trip that we've said - we could live here. It's absolutely magical. In fact we're having trouble pulling ourselves away! I'm sure it is just as special as when you were here. Love that there is a coffee book of the doors!! I need to find this! 🤩
looks just like the cobble streets of Lucca in Italy, and that rooftop bar looks amazing!. How strangely close to the UK it looked with the grey clouds and overcast by the lake. Glad to see you are feeling much happier than last week! We can understand how things momentarily weigh you down and be overwhelming. Keep up the wicked work though every week, as you have done because you are entertaining us all back home at the end of a hard week of work!!!
Yes! The whole city reminded us of something from Italy. Had that same vibrance and history and magic in the air! Thanks so much guys, appreciate you a lot 💛 xx
Loved that, what a place, and what extremes! Well driven Ben. Trudy and Sophia showing what tough birds they are... who need s4 wheel drive/ overlanders eh?... couldnt help but chuckle though! Chesca saying you were off for a refined date night... cut to her eating cheesy mash out of a bowl with a spoon😄
So glad you eventually got a lovely place to chill out.. and great driving Ben, I used to hate 'squeaky bum moments' driving our campervan... so respect to you!! (we once got caught out in the French Massif Central when the snow came down, all I could think about was wishing I was back in my 'normal size car' with my winter tyres on!!)
Yeah driving like is bad enough in a car, nevermind towing your 7m long house with everything you own behind you! Not had to drive like that ever, I don't think. Hopefully that's the first and last but knowing some of the countries coming up, I doubt that!
Very happy you got out of the muddy area and found sunshine for your bodies and souls! Been following you since you said “Goodbye” to Chris and MaryAnne on that special beach in Baja!
Wow, this town is stunning. Your breakfast looked sooo yummy! Lol the stress with all the mud and narrow streets.. poor you 😢 you guys were successful and made it though, thank goodness!
That was incredible, such lows but what out of this world highs! Amazing driving Ben. I would never want to leave that town. So so beautiful. Glad you are feeling better now Ches x
After a potencially serious problem with the rain but resolved by Ben's driving skills you had the greatest enjoyment and fun in San Miguel, that is great. At the opening you said that it looked a bit like the countryside in the U.K., l have never been there but the place did look similar from pictures l have seen. There are a lot oEuropean overlanders in Mexico, mostly Spanish and Argentinians, some American and Canadian, l think connecting with them will make your trip easier, most of them speak English. Great video Checa and Ben.
San Miguel was really the best reward for those driving conditions! We've seen quite a few overlanders here! Mostly Canadians but also many French and Swiss! 💛
All part of the fun of overland travel, a bit of edge of the seat driving!…fair play. I’m sure you already know but lowering tyre pressures will gain you more traction(if things get bad). The town looks amazing !!!….. ( nice 4x4 sprinter in campground??)… Great vid as always. Safe travels guys🤙🤙…..
Some type 2 fun is always good for you! We have been on so many roads where lowering the pressure would have helped but we're just a bit lazy with it and haven't reallyyyy needed it yet. In this case, we'd do it as a last resort, but giving it some welly seemed to do the trick! And yes good spot! It was a US van, they're pretty much all 4x4 over there!
What a roller coaster…. But glad to see you gussied up and having some evening fun later in the vid. The mash and cheese sounds delish. Hope the roller coaster starts to smooth out and you can get back on the level. Don’t lose the enthusiasm, there are lots of fun adventures to come in your future. Keep drinking the squirt juice 😂
Having driven from Canada to Mexico and back in a 24 ft. motorhome I know so well how difficult and stressful driving there can be. By the end of some days I was just mentally exhausted so Ben you are doing great and you keep your sense of humour - well done. And I haven't heard the word "palava" for many many years !! You always take me home when I hear some of the words you use. Watch out for the topes - often not marked until you hit them.
So glad you found some mental space! The past couple days I've been thinking of going with a 4x4 truck and teardrop instead of a van or RV. Y'all have solidified that idea!
👍👍 Two thumbs up for Ben's driving! He would be a natural for driving in the Canadian winter! So glad you invited us along on the journey. Being an invited guest I hope it's not rude of me to ask, but I will anyway. I'm a bit of a map geek. I love maps! Any chance you can get back to the recap of your weeks travel traced on a map? It really helps me wrap my head around exactly where you are. Also could help if you get stranded somewhere. We will know where to start looking!🤣 Edit: Just noticed you have a link to the town in your description. I feel much better and completely orientated now that I navigated the description and found a path to direct me to your destination! I like maps!
Hi Ken! Omg the map fiasco! We also LOVE having the maps and are feeling a little lost (figuratively) without them. We're trying to find a road map of Mexico but they don't seem easy to come by. But rest assured the search is ongoing and we are determined to find one in the next couple of weeks! 💛
❤ GR8 VID ❤ One of the best, its got drama in the mud, its got gorgeous street photograph, its got Chesca all dressed up fancy for date night, it's got River & Scout, its got it Ben driving Sophia Mad Max like the road warrior he is, its got it all ❤ LOVED IT ❤
Well done, Ben!! That definitely looked a challenging day of driving. We have some patches of cobblestone in Seattle, but not entire sections of town. Yikes! And those looked like they were made of river stones to boot. Probably works fine for horses, but driving on it in the rain, yikes! Safe travels to you guys!! ❤️❤️😎👍xx
It's very different from what we're used to, but it's so rewarding at the same time. It's a blast for van life, and we just make life difficult for ourselves by insisting on going to these little colonial towns 😂
Haven't read all the comments so apologies if anyone else has answered. Where did all the water go? Some very large lakes & lagoons are actually slightly tidal. They are so large that they're affected by gravitational pull. So at times there is more water on one end than the other, not by a massive amount but enough to make the water "disappear " for a while.
I should have said in the video but it's definitely not tidal, it's not large enough. Also the water appears and disappears in patches and at irregular intervals. One person did comment and we think it's the most likely - the plants are water-borne and float around, so sometimes they clump together and sometimes the wind blows them apart. This makes so much sense and I'm almost certain that's what causes the water to look like it's disappearing!
Oh my. Nice bit of driving Ben. Off roading and then wet cobbles. Not fun. Bit stressful driving in town. What an amazing city. Just so alive. Everything is impressive to look at, amd as for that breakfast. Lush 😋 Totally agree, the gates, doors of buildings are amazing. Keep Loving the Adventure Both. Love and Big Hugs ❤
Driving in the rain is never fun, nevermind with thick mud and slippery cobblestones 🙈 Thankfully that little town was so worth it - just pure magic! Lucked out with the christmas lights turn on too 🌟 Hope everything is good with you? Sending love and hugs xx 💕
Well done on testing those K02’s to their limit in and out of the mud. Hope Ben enjoyed his tequila squirter you produced. Seriously, great to see you back on form this week.
❤ you guys. About your Squirt fizzy. We had a similar one in Canada called Wink witch had a good blend between lime and lemon. The absolute best of it though is that in the summer heat and in a pint glass full of ice and your discretion of gin...goodness😊
Glad you're feeling better! Also, the place at the end looks amazing (the doors too haha). I'm going to Mexico next year for my first time..Can't wait!
Squirt (or Fresca) salt, lime juice and tequila is a simple version of the famous Mexican cocktail called Paloma. You guys will be in centro America in a much better time than the rainy season a few months ago. So far we’ve not had any slick wet roads! Fingers crossed.
Looks like it's paloma's all round 😋 We've had lots of rain up here in San Miguel but think it's also the altitude. As we head south it looks a lot drier and sunnier. Hope you guys are all having fun 💛
@@OverlandingSophia it's been hot and dry these last few days in El Salvador. Crossing Honduras Saturday and hopefully be in Nicaragua the following day.
Hi ya Chesca,Ben,River and Scout you are certainly on an adventure, thanks 🙏 for sharing. I am definitely a 🌵 desert person . Take care and stay safe cheers from Australia 🇦🇺🚐🌴🌟🌟❤️.
Ah amazing! I was saying to Ben I'd love to stay here for a few weeks and study Spanish! It's such a beautiful place. Although very wet at the minute as I type this 😂 💛
One thing I’m not sure anyone has mentioned if you do find yourself with very little traction letting air out of your tyres will give you a much larger footprint, of course you want to be able to air them back up after.
Yes of course! We felt we didn't need to do that but we also didn't realise how bad the mud was until we were in the middle of it. We would only compress if we really felt we needed to, especially in the pouring rain!
Loved this so many emotions with you guys ,its a veritable thrill ride.Cant wait to see your wedding with the huge paper mache bride and groom & donkey of course.I always thought Mexico was hot and sunny 24 -7,it reminded me of Morcambe at first(wet & miserable ).So glad to here your feeling better. All the best!
San Miquel de Allende would definitely be a "pick me up" for the both of you. Was treated to a visit of this lovely town a few years ago and really enjoyed its beauty. Glad you were able to enjoy some of its food and drink! Awesome - wish we were there too... don't forget to get a taste of the Mezcal!!!

Well driven Ben, just a tip, if you drop the tire pressures it lengthens the footprint and improves grip, all terrains are designed with stronger side walls to allow for this. with the tyre being more flexible when lower pressure (around 20 psi for what you were doing) is also allows the tyres to shed the mud rather than filing the tred. Always then re-inflate when on hard surface as the tyres will heat up on tarmac. Get yourself an ARB compressor and rapid deflator to make life easier. Stay safe. PS. I think it's our favourite town now! Going to take a lot to beat this place 💛
Good job driving Ben. Glad you are feeling more positive ❤
He did amazing didn't he!
what a great name for a drink Squirt hahaha :) how cool the balcony dogs,
Haha I know, whoever named it! 😂
I am sure glad that the doggie just wanted a meal. 😊 Meals on wheels lol
Hahaha we really are doggie meals on wheels 😂
Jus Love you guys... You are the BEST.🌿❤️💕❤️🌿
West Coast Canada 🍁
Stay Strong Enjoy the Adventures
Thank you 🥹 Sending love to Canada! 💕
Great video.
Thanks Tom 🙏❤️
What a roller coaster…. But glad to see you gussied up and having some evening fun later in the vid. The mash and cheese sounds delish. Hope the roller coaster starts to smooth out and you can get back on the level. Don’t lose the enthusiasm, there are lots of fun adventures to come in your future. Keep drinking the squirt juice 😂
Thank you, think we really needed a break in that little town. The mash and cheese healed my soul alone! 😂 We don't talk about the squirt juice LOL
Haha we love the word palava! So wonderfully describes a messy situation 😂 Topes are works of the devil!
Really good episode, I expect everyone was rooting for you to get off the muddy track without incident! Well done! Lovely town, the food looked tasty!
Thank you! It was a pretty tense drive 😬 💛
Fantastic Video guys , such a Beautiful town . Hugs to River & Scout . Safe travels guys ❤❤❤❤
Thanks so much Alice 💕 🐾
So glad you found some mental space! The past couple days I've been thinking of going with a 4x4 truck and teardrop instead of a van or RV. Y'all have solidified that idea!
Haha maybe consider a 4x4 van?! Wouldn't want to be dragging anything down that mud road! 💛
Excellent bit of driving Ben loved the vlog guys
Thank you, he did amazing, that mud was no joke 🥴
So glad you feel better. Look after yourselves. That drive looked tense !!!
Thanks Martin, mots intense drive I think we've done! xxx
We will know where to start looking!🤣
Edit: Just noticed you have a link to the town in your description.
Great video! Love the suspenseful music. :)
Hehe thank you 😃
Great video guys. Especially the bit about the grilled cheese. I absolutely bloody love grilled cheese
Hahah the best part of most places is the food! 😋
❤ GR8 VID ❤ One of the best, its got drama in the mud, its got gorgeous street photograph, its got Chesca all dressed up fancy for date night, it's got River & Scout, its got it Ben driving Sophia Mad Max like the road warrior he is, its got it all ❤ LOVED IT ❤
Aw thanks David 💕 Haha it really was crazy Mad Max driving 😂
Wow on Mexico vanlife adventure continues to Argentina making memories of this wild things
Thanks Charlene 🥰
Thumbs up getting out of that mess
Thanks Shelley, glad to be out of there 💛
Well done, Ben!! That definitely looked a challenging day of driving. We have some patches of cobblestone in Seattle, but not entire sections of town. Yikes! And those looked like they were made of river stones to boot. Probably works fine for horses, but driving on it in the rain, yikes!
Safe travels to you guys!! ❤️❤️😎👍xx
Yep these roads are not made for cars!! Nevermind huge long vans 🙈 💛 xx
Saludos desde Mexico 🇲🇽
Gracias! ✨❤️
Feliz Navidad🎄
Feliz Navidad Brad ✨💖
Mexico really is a trying place, you two have your work cut out. Loving the videos, inspired to get our van over there in the future
It's very different from what we're used to, but it's so rewarding at the same time. It's a blast for van life, and we just make life difficult for ourselves by insisting on going to these little colonial towns 😂
@@OverlandingSophia it may be more difficult but you always find those little gems off the beaten track and away from the tourists 😊
Tequila and Squirt is our favorite beach margarita hack! Cheers
Totally agree! 💛 🍻
@@OverlandingSophia that does sound very feasible.
Yep those tyres have been worth every penny! God Ian you're just as bad as Ben 😆
Well done Ben!!!!!
Thanks Kathy 😃
Just a reminder, all the drama makes for GREAT footage😂 Glad yall surfed your way through that mud! Cheers 🍻
Hahah we DID surf our way out of that!! That was genuinely the sensation at times 😂
❤ you guys.
About your Squirt fizzy. We had a similar one in Canada called Wink witch had a good blend between lime and lemon. The absolute best of it though is that in the summer heat and in a pint glass full of ice and your discretion of gin...goodness😊
A pint of tequila and lime juice and ice?! Now we’re talking 😍✨
Glad you're feeling better! Also, the place at the end looks amazing (the doors too haha). I'm going to Mexico next year for my first time..Can't wait!
Ah you are going to absolutely love it!! It's crazy but in the best way 🙏 💛
Amazing place! Probably one of the best kept secrets in North America.
Would have to agree with you there, we've fallen in love with it here 💛
Lovely video. I hope you guys are going to Oaxaca.... same kind of magical mexican city.
Yes of course! After Christmas 🥰
Loved it....what an adventure 😎👍......& Thank goodness for tequila. 🤣🤭......take care peeps xxx merry Christmas 🥳🎄🎄🎄🎄
Thank you! Haha no wonder they drink Tequila in Mexico, you need it just to get through day to day life 😂 xx
@@OverlandingSophia 🤣🤣🤣👍
Thanks Barry, we're a long way from the desert here! 😂 Hope all is good with you down under! xx
I love Squirt grapefruit soda! It's difficult to find where I live. So glad you didn't bog down in the mud!
Goes perfect with tequila!
I spent 4 weeks in San Miguel de Allende learning intensive Spanish. I wore sandals the whole time. I remember the "hora feliz" every evening. 😁
Ah amazing! I was saying to Ben I'd love to stay here for a few weeks and study Spanish! It's such a beautiful place. Although very wet at the minute as I type this 😂 💛
@@OverlandingSophia Orale! If you have time, you should visit the Museo De Los Momias in nearby Guanajuato. That place is something else. 🤪
Hey, can show where you are on a map? Didn’t you used to do that . Thanks.
Yes!! We are desperate to find a Mexico road map! They are surprisingly difficult to find, but we're trying! 💛
Hahah it's got to happen! Apparently that was a pre-wedding parade too, not even the actual day! Hope all is good with you Nick, sending love 💛
Yess I'm sure it still has the same magic from when you were here! We can't leave Mexico without sampling the mezcal 😋 ✨
Lucky man Ben😃
Too right I am 😃 👍 Are you referring to the grilled cheese?
Nope@@OverlandingSophia
Well deserved beer 😊
Cocktails of course! 😂 🥂
