San Diego: Suspect Drives into Bay 07082024 (UPDATE)

Around midnight, SDPD officers responded to a stabbing call, where a woman was stabbed by a male at the Travelodge Motel at 6750 La Jolla Blvd.
The male suspect then fled on foot, but a description of the suspect’s car was known to the Police. A short time later in downtown San Diego, a San Diego Harbor Police spotted a car traveling at high speed and going the wrong way on Market St. A short pursuit began, but the officer lost sight of the car.
Within minutes, some fisherman called 911, stating that a car was speeding on the U.S.S. Midway’s Pier and launched off the pier into San Diego Bay.
The driver missed one of the fishermen by approximately 10 ft.
The car landed and then floated for approximately 30 seconds before sinking. SD Harbor Police, SDFD, & SD City Lifeguards arrived. Two divers from the SD Harbor Police went into the water and found the vehicle approximately 80 ft away from the pier, and approx 40 feet down in the water.
The driver was deceased.
The car was the same as the stabbing suspect from La Jolla. The divers recovered the body and brought him to shore. The female victim is in stable condition, according to the SDPD. A recovery of the vehicle is to follow.
UPDATE From SDPD:
San Diego - Just after midnight on Monday morning, the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) responded to a radio call of an assault with a deadly weapon at the Shoal Hotel located at 6750 La Jolla Blvd.
Responding officers soon learned that a front desk clerk of the hotel, now known as 23-year-old Aaron Tran, had entered the room of two hotel guests, where he assaulted one of them.
Tran had checked the two guests into their room, and later in the evening, used the hotel phone to call the women to tell them he needed to enter their room due to a water leak next door. Once inside, Tran walked with one of the victims to the bathroom area where he handed his cellular phone to her. She was able to read on his phone, “Don’t scream, I have a knife and I will cut you, put your hands behind your back.”
The victim looked up and saw that Tran was now holding a knife. A struggle ensued during which time the victim was cut with the knife near her collar bone. She was able to scream and wake up the other female in the room and they both fled into the parking lot and called 911.
Responding officers were not able to locate the suspect but learned he drove a white Honda and later obtained the license plate number. This information was broadcast citywide and approximately 30 minutes later, San Diego Harbor Police tried to make a stop of a wrong way driver in the area of Harbor Dr. and Market St. After losing sight of the vehicle, another call soon came in stating a white Honda had driven at a high rate of speed off the pier near the USS Midway.
Tran and his vehicle were eventually recovered from the bay. Tran was deceased and appeared to have self-inflicted injuries to his upper body. The injured victim from the hotel was treated at the hospital and released.
The car was removed from the water at approximately 5:00 a.m. When the vehicle was brought up, there was an oil slick in the water and the heavy smell of gasoline in the air.

I'd hate to get the tow bill on that job. Thank you Doug for staying '97 so long to get us the video of the recovery of the vehicle. A friend drove that same heavy-duty wrecker (rotator) from RoadOne, who was killed on the EB52 summit, by a DUI hit & run driver speeding in the emergency lane. We don't give enough credit to tow truck drivers out there.

Thanks for the update Doug! This is the craziest story I've heard in a long time. I worked at several hotels when I was younger and met some potentially dangerous characters, but none as bold as Tran. I hope the two women are ok even though a trauma like this usually takes a while to overcome. Unbelievable!

The bay is highly polluted by heavy industry and the military. 11 businesses and the Navy were supposed to clean it up, but Bush gave everyone a pass in 2011. So toxic fish is whats for dinner!
Nothing new for the bay. The Navy used to dump things into the bay back in the day.
That engine sludge is nothing compared to the PCBs and other pollutants already in the bay.

Look at the car's engine and transmission as the car is pulled from the water. It takes a major impact to do that. That impact affects the driver too.
Note how far up the chest the blood goes; this isn't consistent with usual self-inflicted knife wounds.
