If we go to the sub replacement spiral long enough the chance to end humanity is not trivial, I know they did experiments with mice colonies and once they started to decline they declined until the colony was annihilated, this is somehow totally non intuitive to us.
We as humans have a very poor record prognosticating the future, in the 70' it was the other way around everybody was scared of Malthusianism, to this day WEF policies are guided by that inertia.
I don't think declining fertility is a cultural fud, the fact that it is cyclical over millennia and is so sticky, it's a more complex issue. My guess is more tied to subconscious collective and self regulating systems.
Also interesting the correlation, in both Ancient Greek and modern times is tied to technological advancement and relative prosperity.
