The idea of the different essences seems similar to the "four humours" of ancient Greek medicine. There's blood, black bile, yellow bile, and phlegm. Too much or too little of any of them was thought to be what caused most diseases. It's wild how theories can sort of converge like that.
I really have to wonder if the inspiration for the four humors came from evidence of disease, such as yellowing of skin and eyes due to liver failure, or even discharge as a byproduct of illness.
@@bigfootpart4therevengeancing That probably played a role, but trial and error were also probably involved. If your crazy unscientific theory about how the body works incentivizes you to accidentally do something that is actually healthy, like eating a varied diet, then people start to think it is true.
@@bigfootpart4therevengeancing there's a theory that the western four humors originated in some one drawing blood an leaving it in a bowl for a while. the blood would congeal and separate into separate layers. Yeah- also green tea (which is likely what it was) is supposed to have health benefits. Or really any tea can be nice at settling your stomach. And it's hydrating too
The idea that climax makes you weak is surprisingly common in many cultures. Must be the fatigue of breeding another bunch of those pesky tadpoles. P.s. girlfriends (or boyfriends) who check your phone are best kicked out, the sooner, the better. Even if you don't cheat on them.
I have a great idea for a Halloween episode Linfamy. It's about the haunted Himuro mansion. Some pretty twisted, f**** up shit went down there and it's said that some who went there never came back.
Somehow I know that when Linfamy used tadpole as an euphimism for sperm. Also I don't know that medieval Japanese already practicing edging. Thanks for that knowledge, I guess.
I LOVE that you throw shade over some practices that some people actually WANT to bring back due to some odd fetish associated to the "mysticism" of them despite those same practices were proved wrong by a more accurate method or having results that were debatable at best.
I was honestly thinking this video would be about some kind of frog medicine. I would totally love a video about ancient Chinese medicine and the use of frogs for healing.
I don't get it. If sperm is concentrated life force in physical form instead of trying not to release it why didn't the shogun just encourage some group activities so he could eat everyone's sperm and extend his life indefinitely
Because a man needs a woman's Jing to be complete. Ancient Daoist priests practice absorbing vaginal fluid through their penis. I don't know why they didn't just drink it though.
Super interesting as always! Does Japanese Buddhist medicine offer any thoughts on women retaining their lifeforce too, or did they just think about those people of the majestic tadpole pole?
The elements sound similar to the western medieval belief of the four humors that they believed where in the body and had to be in harmony for long life and health
The problem with sei is people get jealous of a kensei or even a sensei. A master can teach everything but you have to be ready to become a super hero.
Great video as always. I love aisan cultures and you make them even better with these jokes. Just wanted to say thanks for spreading the knowledge :), and have a great day for anyone reading this.

I think it may be worth mentioning in your videos that both scientific and religious placebos DO work. After eating sugar pills or being prayed over, tumors have shrank. Ailments that couldn't be conventionally treated can still have rapid recovery times if the person is convinced that they should indeed be recovering. The human body is crazy! Outside of modern science, it's entirely possible these folk remedies genuinely helped people. You can hardly blame the priests for continuing a practice that has shown positive results
There are medical doctors who are religious. My doctor is a Dominican priest. He teaches at a medical school. He has 3 expertise, and he is ageneral surgeon too.
If Sei is a person's lifeforce and its physical manifestation is sperm, how are women even alive. Ok, I've seen a few movies on a popular internet website that have women who, by the end of the movie, are most likely immortal.....and sticky. I'm talking about normal women though, and those like a past girlfriend who avoided Sei like the plague. What were their batteries charged with?
@1:00 The risk of getting your head lopped off by a disgruntled patient tended to motivate the monk/doctor to at least have some actual proficiency at healing.
The Indian Hindi also has five elements. They have life energy instead of metal. I'm more parshell to the 4 Greek elements. Air, water, fire & earth. Metal, falls under earth phase. Life energy, falls under fire. Fire phases any and all energy.
I had a feeling that by "tadpoles" you meant jizz. I never knew that bit of belief was adopted by the Japanese. What's truly unfortunate is how it's seeped into today's manosphere

A quietly hilarious introduction to Chinese Folk Medicine, among other things. Some of your best work, Lin.
Gladly shared.
Thanks! :)
I was honestly expecting the "doctors" to prescribe consuming "tadpoles" to increase your own longevity.
I thought they would be literally denying the existence of tadpoles

Tadpoles are cute
Baby chimps overwhelm tadpoles in terms of cuteness. Adults may be compared to toads.
Yes and Baby Axolotl are cute too.
You are cute
And so are you
And tasty 😋
Me before video: who would deny tadpoles? They're so cute!
Me after video: oh....oh no...

If the philosophy is followed, then it would be reasonable for prostitutes to live forever.
Women can do too. They have eggs that they can resent eggs back to the brain. If you can master this you will gain super Normal ability.
Yes, they need to be chanted into men first, as stated in the video.
I'd love to see you do a video on the nobility
