    The idea of the different essences seems similar to the "four humours" of ancient Greek medicine. There's blood, black bile, yellow bile, and phlegm. Too much or too little of any of them was thought to be what caused most diseases. It's wild how theories can sort of converge like that.

    • @bigfootpart4therevengeancing
      @bigfootpart4therevengeancing 2 роки тому +16

      I really have to wonder if the inspiration for the four humors came from evidence of disease, such as yellowing of skin and eyes due to liver failure, or even discharge as a byproduct of illness.

    • @nebojsag.5871
      @nebojsag.5871 2 роки тому

      @@bigfootpart4therevengeancing That probably played a role, but trial and error were also probably involved. If your crazy unscientific theory about how the body works incentivizes you to accidentally do something that is actually healthy, like eating a varied diet, then people start to think it is true.

    • @auroran8951
      @auroran8951 2 роки тому +11

Ailments that couldn't be conventionally treated can still have rapid recovery times if the person is convinced that they should indeed be recovering. The human body is crazy!
    Outside of modern science, it's entirely possible these folk remedies genuinely helped people. You can hardly blame the priests for continuing a practice that has shown positive results
