Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 35th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.

You can hear how much Andrew loved Sarah in the music he wrote for her. This musical is his ultimate gift to her. What other than love could have given us this incredible score?
There's a haunting effect on how Sarah sings this song...
my mom died a year ago today. phantom was one of the things we both dearly loved. i really am wishing she was somehow here again...
The quality of the video has to do with the fact that this Play was created about 26 years ago! Filming and Editing and all have changed ALOT in those years. Also, I'm not saying that you have to love or even like Sarah Brightman BUT, you do need to give her some respect. She originated the role of Christine Daee and was part of the original cast and paved the way for other greats like Sierra Boggess or Samantha Hill or Gina Beck to shine.
My dad just died...6 days ago. We got to see Phantom on Broadway in 1991. One of my FAVORITE musicals!
I love Sierra's Christine, but Sarah's performance makes me cry every single time I hear it.
Nobody sings it like Sarah. Emmy did great on this too, but Sarah did the best. Sarah is the best in Andrew's musicals, she will always be.
Sarah's voice is like angels singing that song besides that she is beautiful and is even more singing and uplifting
The original and best. Sarah IS Christine and always will be!
Those ever unblinking eyes...they stare into the very depths of your soul...
A person who has someone to sing this for them after they are gone is truly a lucky person. Beautiful song, sung beautifully.
But Sarah's voice is just beautiful! What do I care about the video
Maybe there are better singers and actresses than her on Christine´s role, but she will always be the one and only Angel of Music for Andrew Lloyd Webber's eyes, and the one who started with Michael Crawford the huge success of The Phantom of the Opera.
This is one of my fave scenes from the Broadway show. So nostalgic and so poignant esp. when you think of the your loved ones who departed. Love Sarah Brightman's voice.
Beautiful voice.
My favorite Christine is Sarah Brightman!
I love her singing
when i hear this i think of my departed wife and it makes me so sad yet it remindes me of her and the times we shared wow
Guh she's gorgeous and her voice is amazing.
There's a haunting effect on how Sarah sings this song... When I listen to Sierra's singing, I don't if it's just me but it's a bit sharp... Something that usually happens with soprano singers... But Sarah's didn't sound like that...
I love Sarah Brightman to death, she was an awesome Christine, as well as an awesome Blind Mag. Long live Sarah Brightman.
She's coming to a fancy restaurant near where I live soon, can't wait to see her!
SARAH IS THE BEST CHRISTINE!
Andrew Lloyd Webber write the music and since then he allways have Sarah Brightman for the character of Christine Daaé
Got to love 80's hair.
Does that woman never blink?!
he will always love you ,love never dies never
beautiful voice, beautiful song.
i play this on the organ it`s wonderful.
I think she is like wine, the older the better
I agree the 2004 movie version is a better darker visual mood for the sorrowfulness of this song with the fog on the ground and the dark overcast sky fogged background filmed in the sound stage of a movie set this filmed outdoors version in more light; but Sarah Brightman's vocals here are much more powerful than Emmy Rossum's vocals in the movie. Sarah's vocals here bring goosebumps to me. I really do like Emmy's version of Christine but Sarah's vocals are better on this song. In my opinion.
This song makes me cry sooo much and I'm not an emotional person at all
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING...unbarably good
So much better than the movie
Indeed, I will admit though Sierra Boggess certainly can hold her own, and I do enjoy Anna O'Byrne as well, she was fabulous in Love Never Dies
I wish I could sing this song even half as well as any of the Christines!
Beautiful indeed....Such splendid music...
God bless you all.
Beautiful song.
The original and best.
Sarah Brightman is and always will be the best Christine!
Por Dios que cancion, muy conmovedora y la interpretacion exelente como todo lo de Sarah!!!
I believe you missed the point entirely. She clearly stated, "He loved this music and I just happened upon it today." So he liked this musical, and hearing this made her think of him again.
In addition, this song may have been written for a daughter/father deal, but it can be generally interpreted as a song about loss. That being the case, I believe it is perfectly relevant.
The best Christine.
Beautiful melody, i loved
does anyone else love the harp at the beginning? so eerie!
Sarah is looking sooo beautiful in this video!! *-*
This is so 80s!
Oh yes, you CAN say that. . .THOSE EYES ! ! I have the DVD of the "Harem World Tour" and I just stare at THOSE EYES the whole show. . .
Oh, yeah. . .she can sing, too. . .
She IS Christine :)
Today is the fourth anniversary of my husband's death. We were married for 28 years. He was my best friend. He loved this music and I just happened upon it today. Maybe he was trying to tell me something? I will always love you, my Dennis.
Also, she never ages....ever. In fact, I think she looks younger in some of her recent pictures.
Sarah Brightman, Queen of Opera in my opinion.
well said sir nothing more to say you said it all
@zram2008 wonderful comment but as a fan of Ms. Brightman i might ad that Mr. Weber who wrote the musical based the entire show around his now ex wife. The Phantom of the Opera was entirely written around Sarah Brightman, kinda wish I knew what drove the two of them apart but many of his pieces were written with Sarah in mind as the primary performer.
sometimes i wish i had her voice range and sing in a opera way
Isn't it Gustave Daaé?
Don't like this...LOVE THIS is more like it! Songs like this are just so pulling at the heart strings as one grows older.
@keniakittykat It was the 80's its going to be bad editing! lol... and well I don't think Sarah can help but smile while she sings most of the time...
This song benefits so much from a powerful voice! :) Sarah's version gives me goosebumps every time. Emmy's just makes me cringe. You have to have a disciplined voice to do a song like this justice.
@PurpleMaster958Two
Yes. It was released generally later on 1993's "The Premiere Collection" (VHS, CD and presumbaly audiotape. I'm not even going to guess at a DVD, though that'd be awesome).
It is on the Sarah Brightman - Diva: The Video Collection
re there other videos from the original cast like this? I had never seen this before, is there a DVD of it that can be purchased?
what is wrong with you?! somebody is mourning about a loved one's death!!!!!! Yeah this song may be about a daughter missing her father but it's about somebody looking for guidance from a loved family member who died. the comment was uncalled for.
eleanor-rose juckiewicz seeing as andrew wrote phantom for her xxx
the little christine's cute!
The hair is epic. That is all.
In my opinion Sierra Boggess has a beautiful voice, but when she sang this song it bugged me.
how did 80's people get their bangs like that?! GEEZ.
@kippyambar14 I thought the movie came out in 2004 and did not have Brightman/Crawford. Unless this is from a different Phantom movie adaptation? It's a great vid and thanks for posting it!
@EADutton urgh, i think i pressed "vote down" but I definitely don't mean that. and I don't know how to undo that! I wanted to vote up and tell you that i really love your message, and hope that you'll continue to live well for both yourself and him :)
bellooooooooooooooooo
I'm so sorry for your loss.
okay can I just say...I love her voice, and she's pretty...but her eyes!!
Who is the actor who plays Sarah's father in this video?
Wishing you could somehow make the clip again.
@PurpleMaster958Two It's from the movie...old version with Sarah Brightman and Michael Crawford
im 11 and 0:39 made me sad :(
Sarah Brightman has the most terrifying facial expressions. Or lack there-of.
thats my dads name, and he died 4 years ago today!!
really nicely done music vid. sarah always creeps me out a little but this is certainly her at her best....
Not the best. Is a different version, a different Crhistine. Both are talented adn they have their own style. Sarah sings sweeter and Sierra has such a powerful voice. But Anna O'bryne the best with the acting
I somewhat see where they got their inspiration for Emmy Rossum's Hair for Christine in the movie except it's not as 3D as Sarah's:P beautiful video though
woulda been cool is for that last shot they panned up to the phantom
I love P.O.T.O. i know every word and every breath I'm in ,love with the movie so I agree that Emmy did a better job plus her innocence helped the character but I also argue that Sarah did a remarkable job but without the issue between Sarah and Andrew we wouldn't have the greatest film of forever and 2004=)
@STEFILAKEOVA72 really NO its not!... Sarah Brightman has some wonderful talent that can never be compared to anyone else. But yes Emily Rossum makes a great version
minus the vid. The audio is the best ver. for me (> v
@NenadlPopovic mine too...
what was andrew loyd webber thinking? "she is great!!"
the video would be better if it was snowing like in the film
This is Sarah Brightman though, were you comparing?
Damn, I really like the flashback scenes in this video. God they're so awkward. This video's ugliness is sort of tender and charming. Such low production values for such an important production.
suan the sorrow of st perpetura animated
Sarah Brightman always looks like she is yawning while singing.
Is it just me or does she always have the same facial expression
Beautiful video! I think sarah brightman's voice isnt good for the role as christine, but she is a good opera singer! I love her! but as christine...nah...
But this is Sarah Brightman...
:( Very sorry for you.
Her singing is great but her acting... she looks too damn happy XD
Emmy Rossum :-)
Charles Daae?
Seriously, does she EVER blink???
