Which vinegar have you used Please,my late sister use to make that..You brought me backsome fab memories!
Use white vinegar but make sure you rinse it well after it is separated or else when you add sugar & cook it, the taste of vinegar will come through & spoil it.

I thought you would wash it first to take away the vinegar which is what is required. Or else the vinegar taste comes through even with sugar added.
