- Fifty years ago, on July 4, 1973, Ford Advanced Vehicle Operations unveiled a thrilling addition to the Escort lineup - the RS 2000. This high-performance model was introduced at the Aveley plant in Essex, UK.
The Escort RS 2000 boasted an impressive powertrain, featuring Ford's single overhead camshaft 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder in-line engine. This engine, already utilized in the Cortina and the American Pinto range, delivered a formidable 100 horsepower. With this power, the RS 2000 could achieve a top speed of 110 mph (177 km/h) and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 km/h) in just 9.0 seconds.
Initially, the Escort RS 2000 was primarily intended for the export market and was not available for domestic customers until October 11, 1973. Its introduction marked a significant milestone for the Escort range, as it offered enhanced performance and sportiness, captivating car enthusiasts worldwide.
With its dynamic capabilities and distinctive design elements, the Escort RS 2000 left an indelible mark on automotive history, embodying the spirit of speed and excitement that still resonates with enthusiasts to this day.

FYI, really although prettier with better seats RS2000 was the least sporty ;) The Engine was about the same weight as a 3.5ltr Rover V8 :D Cortina Gearbox had crap ratios 3.65:1 first (from memory) and they stuck the Battery at the front under the bonnet, so the car was way heavier and all on the nose Std RS1600 (BDA) would do over 40mpg if you feather footed it :) don't remember 1600X Flows being particularly good on fuel but I expect they would do 35mpg if you tried a little.
So interesting to hear, I have a Mexico, and some years ago I had the mk2 RS2000 which I should have kepted 😀

I'm pretty sure the gearbox was out of a Corsair 200OE as was the Mexico and twin cams. Not Cortina
Correct me if I am wrong, but the Cortina came out after the Corsair, and the Corsair was short-lived as the Cortina took the top sales, then the Escort followed up with top small car sales 😉 as to the gearbox fitted in my Ford Escort Mexico came from the Cortina, but the question is did the Cortina have the same gearbox as the Corsair, and I believe that the Mk1 Transit van had the same gearbox 😀 the gearbox was German e box, which is different to the RS1600, this came from the RS Owners Club 😉 laters Steve
