- In this episode, we head back to Taos so that Macky can finally ride his singlespeed (the wait since hand surgery has been killing him!). We also get to pick up our van and get it ready for some summer adventures.

"on a single speed, you never have to worry about being in the right gear, since you're always in the wrong gear" -Seth
This comment is so valid it hurts my legs and lungs reading it.. but I love my single speed
It hurts so good for some reason
That’s the one I was thinking if
nice to see Macky wearing his safety flip-flops while angle grinding :)
I've always said that every single speed bike has 3 gears: Sit down, stand up and walk. Hooray single speeds!
I love my single speed - it is the bike I feel the most connection with. It's my most simple ride, but it definitely has the most soul - it talks to me in ways my other bikes don't.
My fave single speed saying, "going single speed won't save you any money".
we always say we have three gears.....stand up, sit down and walk. nice vid on cycling's purest form! i love my SS
we're everywhere
At 18:21 is another advantage of a single speed mountain bike, you can lay it down on the drive side.
My singlespeed saying: It's always a good day to take the bike out for a walk. Try Centennial Cone when you get back to Colorado.
Some flat lander asked me where the top was last season because it’s all up hill. 🤣😂
It is my favorite singlespeed ride since the climbs are mellow for the front range.
My mind says that a single speed would be cool, my legs say a single speed would be a bad idea.
You would be surprised ... as long as you pay attention to form and don't start ganking your knees.
Most folks would never try a singlespeed on trails because they 'think' they cant. How do you know if you never try? That's pretty negative thinking. You're defeated before ever even trying!
The attitude is do or don't. Not can or can't. You go a little past where you thought you could go each time. Give it your best, then try harder next time. Its an aspiration.
Singlespeeds WILL make you stronger and more skilled. Bigger and yet even bigger hills, mountains and obstacles are something to be aspired to. Just like any other bike.
You are making David Freiburger proud with the flip flops and grinder.
Lol

Beautiful video. There's something magical about singlespeeding.
Don't forget, "My legs are my gears!"
Syd and Macky, good to see you guys enjoying some time together after a long winter... nice to see the smiles and a kiss!
I love the fact that he is in safety glasses, ear plugs and SAFETY toe flip flops. ; ) I do the same type of thing all the time.
Thank you for another great video! I love my single speed. I have found that when it comes to hills on a single speed "you rock or you walk". I will either fly up the hill passing geared bikes or I'll be walking up the hill being passed by all the geared bikes. I mostly find myself walking anything steep but the times I "rock" the hill are extremely satisfying. Love your videos, your dynamic as a couple is as entertaining as the bike stuff is informative.
Give your mechanic a 2nd chance? Love the cat and single speed! Stay safe everyone.
I'm considering it 😁
Great video - all the better for Syd's input at the end - that really made me smile!!!😁
Love the edit, most especially all the short clips stitched in. Great music as always. You guys are awesome!
Love your work Syd and Mac. The SS has three gears. Sit down and pedal. Stand up and pedal. And walk. Great to see both getting back to the joy. Cheers Mark. West Australia
rode single speed for like 5 years. loved the simplicity and the challenge. great for alpine riding. nothing to break and you walk when the grade gets too steep saving tons of energy on those all day adventures. might go back to it actually
The best thing I love about my singlespeed is the only regular maintenance is keeping the chain clean and oiled. 😛
"You only need a single speed to go forward."
Worth the wait! Seriously a good looking bike.
On my singlespeed - my common saying is "I have 3 speeds - sit, stand, and push!"
That’s the one I say all the time!!
Well done Macky! Very happy you're back in the MTB saddle!
Me too!
Macky!!! Grinder and hoodie cords???
Good to see you two back! I've missed you!
"Though you may seldom be in right gear, you are Never in the Wrong gear" is how I put it
Love riding my SS. Also always stoked seeing you post. 😎🙌
Great stuff 😊 Syd&Macky hopefully you are keeping well Over the pond 👌🏴🏴👌🚴🚴
Some time ago i spent four months riding a fully rigid 26" single speed, what i learnt was energy preservation. All those little lumps and bumps that kill momentum, on a full sus bike they are nothing but when you are always caught in the wrong gear trying to maintain speed they mean so much.
How do you know someone’s a singlespeeder? They’ll tell you 😁
Well ya because its actually worth mentioning ;)
Did I tell you that I ride a singlespeed?
yes indeed i do
Singlespeed and the Adventure Van. Perfect.
You guys rock! Thanks for the awesome videos 👍
I ride a single speed in my age group (70+) against my geared buddies. I win about half the time. My saying is “A single speed is the perfect bike. If I win I say ‘and I was on a single speed. ‘ If I lose I say ‘Well I was on a single speed.’ “ Enjoy your ride.
Got lots of sailing Stars to watch but only this for MTB stars.
Great job!
Such an enjoyable vid! Now that I'm back out west, gonna have to do some NM trips!
The horses based bumper cleaning service is a nice perk of that highway.
Riding the rolling trails of the upper midwest, I like my 34/17 gear. I would not want to push anywhere near that gear on any of the trails in Northern NM that I've ridden.
This video made me really really miss New Mexico!
"Which way is up?" lol....dog house for you sir! But, that was hillarious.
i've been riding single speed for years.. don't have any good sayings, but every time i see someone on the trail messing with anything related to their gears: i say something like "..that's why i ride single speed" it's annoying but fun.
Video: when you cut back to syd putting on your handlebars... pretty funny.
Cool my bikes a SingleSpeed right now because I need new shift cable!!🤣🤣
That's a hard gear!
I now really need to get some new cable!! 😂
Love the idea of single speed, will definitely have to give it a go!
It's pretty darn fun!
Do it! Best way to spice the same old trails. Perfect if you only have an hour to ride.
Single speeding is my happy place.
I like the new intro. Been waiting for six months for the brake system for my SS.
Just make it fixed gear, then you hardly need brakes! Fixed offroad is more fun than should be legal!
on a single speed never have to be worried about being in the right gear because you’re never in the right gear
I got into downhill and eventually single speed because of saddle sores from an epic PNW adventure in 2001. Getting out of the saddle was a badass way to heal. Watching Syd build that ultra light steed up was super cool too, and tinkering with the ring size and chain stay length will keep you engaged mentally. How does that carbon ride compared to a steel frame vibration wise?
A wise man once told me “there is no shame is walking a Singlespeed”.
Single speed dj is my favorite do everything bike.
Since the video was made in Taos, I was hoping for a cameo appearance by Bob. Is Bob band from anymore appearances became he won the ski valley hill climb? Lol. Great to see you both with big smiles again!
We're considering un-banning him if there's enough requests 😝
I rode BMX as a kid, I miss spending time on a single speed. I got fairly good at spinning while standing (perhaps ridiculous cadences compared to MTB). I've always found it helpful to be able to stand and spin when doing certain types of technical climbs on MTB. FYI you can ride single speed on a geared MTB...just don't shift.
Try fixed gear offroad. Its more fun than should be legal. It will teach you how to pedal the right way too.
I definitely lost some speed on flat parts since I'd converted to SS though the bike's now lighter, quiter, has a clean edgy look and is ultimately fun to ride
good job Macky..i think you might have to speak to your mechanic though.. :D be safe but kick some butt guys!!
I loved my Niner Air 9 Carbon even better after I put 1x11 gears on it.
Enjoy your vlog! Good to see Macky riding again. What kind of computer was that on Macky's single speed,?
That's the Dash L50 (bit.ly/3vvNBbg). That link will get you 20% off.
Awesome to see you guys back at it and healthy!!!
Quick question: How do you figure out the ratio between the front chainring and the back gear? Is there a formula for that?
Most people just write it as 32x18 but if you want the ratio, just divide the front by the rear. In this case it's 1.77. There is also a gear inches measurement which takes week size into consideration, but I know I'm gonna be on 29" wheels so doesn't matter to me 😁
I almost spit out my evening wine at 9:25!
Love my single speed.
Correction .. on a single speed you have 3 x gears ... Standing, Sitting and Walking.
If you really want a work out, ride single speed while coaching NICA. No room for momentum on those climbs.
A buddy of mine has a SS saying from a movie he uses. Think it’s from Young Guns. Something like. “You gotta keep moving, if you slow down, that’s when they get you”.
"I can't help because I'm catted" ah the dreaded (not really) felonius impedimentia, may you swiftly recover!
"Less gears, more beers" or as a response to you don't have gears! "sure I do, ONE (points at chainring)...TWO (points at cog)" and then proceed to act like you don't understand what they are saying 😆. That's my go-to on the opener climb when you are inevitably stuck mid pack and are trying to keep it easy and fun
Nice video!
6:20 safety flip-flops on! 👍🏻🙈
Loose horses alongside the highway - bad news when traveling at night. My father had friends traveling in a Cadillac on a Northern NM highway at night. They came over a rise there was a horse. It flipped up and sheared off the windshield decapitating the three in the front seat. I think the three in the back seat also died but still had their heads.
Eek 😬 this section also has quite a few elk so we avoid driving it at night when we can.
The wrong gear is where I live
One bourbon, one scotch, one gear
I have one gear, awesome !
Monogamous gear
Standing uphill, sitting down.
If I had all those gears I’d rule the world.
Single speed, I work for my coffee
You think that was a tough hill, hold my gear
One gear, No fear
Awesome!
18/32 is a stiff gear. Nice work! My poor knees can't handle anything taller than a 19/32.
Everything I rode was pretty flat on this ride. It's gonna be interesting to try it on steeper terrain...
Buy 3 or 4 cogs with as varied of terrain as you ride. 2:1 on flat coastal races and momentum the ~100ft down/up ravines. 32:17 and 18 are great for foothills races or everyday riding. 32:21 and 22 is for the mtn races with big vert on tech singletrack. 32:20 is for the mtn races that also have gravel sections like SM100...which is SSer death...and also something you should come out and do! Love the bike and attitude. Gotta sprint-coast the flats. Get to like 95% max cadence and just hammer 2 strokes and flick your calf on the last front foot stroke before coasting for a few seconds. You can get a crazy effective cadence that way. Like 150 to 160
I went 32/18 because it was the only cog and ring I had and it fit with no tensioner hahaha my bike chose my ratio.
@@kennethelliot8164 Remember Macky got within an inch of the tattoo at the 2012 world champs. Not a single speed novice :)
@@franmcgowan4068 news to me, rad!
Hmm, almost makes me want to go build up that Redline Monocog I have sitting in the garage.
A single speed can be walked up a hill just as fast as one with gears. I ride fixed on the road. But the one gear thing seams pointless to me on the trail when I'm generally more interested in going down and worry more about the bike surviving than the weight of the bike.
I have a 1x12 on my MTB, but I only use one of them at a time, so kind of the same. ;)
😂
Life is Simple on a Single Speed.
Macky fit a rigid fork on your bike

"one gear one life" and for brake less fixed gear "breaks are death" from the movie premium rush
@SYD and MACKY What is the brand of the hitch-mount bike rack you're using? thx!! Love the content.
It's a Recon Rack.
Single Speed is the best speed!
32xawesome
Less gears, more beers
Hahaha, running a grinder in flip flops - totally something I would do :-) You can't not get better riding a SS.
100% here for the bebe wild horse content haha

I'm glad that even pros find things they (or their mechanic/student/life insurance beneficiary) forgot to fully torque on a new build. So it's not just me...
😂🤣 I'd be more worried if I had a life insurance policy 😁
No silly, 3 speeds sit, stand, walk :)
Spin, mash, grind
Happy to see RockTape on your leg! I was one of their first five instructors for courses for healthcare providers and I’ve been working with them for close to ten years, so RockTape has changed my life in many great ways! I hope it’s helping with your rehab!
On a single speed there are actually 3 gears: pedaling sitting down, pedaling standing up and finally --- hike a bike ;-)
goggles, ear defenders and flip-flops, awsome Protection for grinding....
To one is to be at one with The One.
I had a single speed track bike in college- man, did my legs get thick.
From bike blogger " single speed is all I need "
And what hub on the Niner? It was either fairly quiet or volume turned way down. Thanks.
Vittoria Deamion plus rear wheel.
On a singlespeed you can always shift into the standing gear
I just finished my first single speed build!
Nice!
I rode a single speed for a while and I loved it but that was a long time ago when I was much younger. I'm toying with the idea of building one again. What gear sizes (#T) are you using for the chain ring and rear cog?
32x18t
@@sydandmacky Sweet. Thanks.
Gearing really depends on your terrain, style and especially your fitness.
Take a derailleur bike on a typical ride and find the one gear that you can pedal the entire ride. Id recommend a gear just a bit higher than that. A gear to aspire to and it makes it easier to pedal flat sections of trail or roads.
Learning how to pedal extreme cadences at both ends of the spectrum is the key. Gotta get used to pedaling grindingly slow and blindingly fast!
"My Legs are my gears" - SS and Fixed Gear riders.
Positive battery terminal on van needs disassembly/cleaning or replacement.
“One gear to rule them all”
A Singlespeed is like a gym on wheels.
Want an even better workout? Try fixed gear off-road. Since you're pedaling always, it's a very efficient workout and use of your time on the bike. Pedaling ALWAYS will force you to 'work it out' and teach you to pedal the right way. Never coasting teaches you to focus, concentrate and think about what you're doing on the bike. It not only builds fitness and muscles you never knew you had, it builds skills for handling, line choice and much more.
Most folks think it's impossible, but it's not if you force yourself to just do it.
Fixed offroad is more fun than should be legal!!
Did you mention your gearing? I didn't catch that
32x18t
I know what you mean by wishing for an uphill section. Recently I got up to 30mph with a 72 inch gear. Had front brake with no way to coast. Probably about 140 rpm. Often breath harder downhill than uphill.
Are you talking about a fixed gear? Single speed is not necessarily fixed gear.
@@Lestat1795 Fixed. Big risk of pedal strike.
@@davidburgess741 😉freehub was a very good invention.
Fixed offroad is more fun than should be legal! It will show you your weakness on a bike!! Its a truly wicked workout that builds both fitness and skills. Certainly not for everyone though!
Pedal strike isn't that a big deal until the obstacles get to be about the size of a log where you wouldnt want to break your toes! I'll skid up to obstacles to clear my feet and time the pedals. It's just a skill to learn like everything else. You pay close attention riding fixed offroad! I pedal strike at least once or twice every ride, but I've been riding these same rocky trails for over 20 years. I don't ride my 'Crossafix' like my fully either!
Yes! Descents are often harder than the climbs! There's no rules saying you can't have at least a front brake though! Brakes give me a chance to catch my breath! The way I look at it, the laws of motion, science, inertia, gravity and momentum ALL REQUIRE the use of brakes! But that's seems to be (not so) common sense these days!
safety glasses, ear protection but sandals haha
Single speed , gravel bike!
If you clear a climb, singlespeed. If you walk a climb, singlespeed. Works both ways. ;-)
gears are for old men and little boys, has been my go to saying for my last 20ish years riding SS exclusively on the road, mtn and cyclocross. problem is I'm now an old man...
do the New Mexican Mountains ever get boring for you guys? every time I got I get constantly blown away!
We agree, love the riding in the area!
Here's an interesting comparison, how will your ride times change on a single speed? In my crowd we were surprised to see them get faster on our XC trails. Even with walking up some sections, our overall times were better.
Yep, still surprises me when I PR trails on my SS. I think it's the fun factor, you can't help but go faster when you're having that much fun!
Lol I have a PR on a half mile gravel climb at the end of my daily trails on my vintage SS. It’s either stand up and smash or walk😁 No in between!
@@TrailBreaker I love your vintage SS!
