The song's lyrics were inspired by a real-life experience that David Lee Roth had. In an interview, he explained that he once had a one-night stand with a girl who was heartbroken over her ex-boyfriend. The next day, he saw her crying and wrote the song based on that experience. The song's opening guitar riff was actually inspired by the Kinks' hit song "All Day and All of the Night". Eddie Van Halen was a big fan of the Kinks and had previously covered their song "You Really Got Me" on Van Halen's debut album.
This is on VH debut album, what a debut album it was:"Runnin' with the Devil"; "Eruption" (instrumental); "You Really Got Me" (Amazing Cover); Ain't Talkin' 'bout Love"; "I'm the One"; "Jamie's Cryin'" ; "Feel Your Love Tonight"; I'd put this up with any single album and/or debut album ever.

@@jme808 I’m not familiar with the Kiss song you’re describing, so that’s also possible. However, I do know that the main riff throughout _Funky Cold Medina_ is from Foreigner’s _Hot Blooded._
Someone once told me - and this has stuck with me since - that it makes sense to think of Eddie Van Halen not as a musician, but as a songwriter. If you take away the blistering lead lines and solos, you still have these absurdly catchy riffs and masterfully composed pop songs, especially on the first few VH albums. He really was a pop songwriter who just happened to be a singularly talented, virtuoso guitar player.
For Me, this song IS Van Halen. When I think of Van Halen, this is the first song that comes to mind. Lex you nailed it once again, early Van Halen (Dave era) was the music of youthful exuberance and trying to conquer the world. Later Van Halen (Van Hagar era) was a mature, polished band trying to cement their place in history. Both are great, just different.
You are exactly right. forever fresh, This album changed everything in rocknroll, Eddie's sound and virtuosity just blew everyones mind. the vocal harmonies are unmatched.
I think this song shows the features that made Van Halen Van Halen when they burst on the scene: incendiary electric guitar (EVH), flamboyant lead vocals (DLR), killer background vocals/harmonies (Michael Anthony), rock-solid drums (AVH), all wrapped up in a catchy tune.
Brad focused and concentrating on the lyrics and Lex feeling the groove that’s gotta make her move. And Lex occasionally looking out the corner of her eye at Brad. You guys are one of my 2 favs on the tube
Saw them in early 80's at Rupp Arena. DLR was so wasted, halfway through this song he stopped singing while the band played on. He screams out..."I forgot the f#ckn words!" Memorable.
Back in the late 80's a drummer acquaintance was playing at a bar as a fill-in...some issue with the band's real drummer. They were covering Tone-Loc's Wild Thang and he said to me off the side of the stage that he didn't know how the song went. I told him that it's just a sample of the intro to Jamie's Crying. He nailed it with no problems.
When I was coming of age in the early 70's this album, Van Halen I was one of my favorites. Every song on this album is worth reviewing. You two enjoy your holiday.
Album of my youth that I still blast. Great thing about EVH was he didn't feel the need to show off with "watch how fast I can play!" during every break or solo. If the song called for a simple melodic riff, that's what he played. There were enough other songs where he could demonstrate how other worldly his skills were. Lots of fast guitar players but not everyone can write hit songs.
She nailed it with her analysis. It was definitely music written for young boys from a young boy's perspective. And I was the perfect age for that stuff. And every year of my high school years in around between Christmas and March they would release a record. And when they did you knew what the soundtrack for the entire summer was going to be. By the way a sample of this was used in a hip hop song by Tone Loc.
Great backing vocals by Michael Anthony. IMO the best Van Halen album. Van Halen I. Listen to Sunday Afternoon In The Park/One Foot Out Of The Door from Fair Warning. Great synth intro and a fast song with a great guitar solo
I think part of what makes it sound so fresh and timeless is that VH didn't copy anyone and no other band since has done it like VH did. Very unique and distinctive without being bracketed by similar time frame music. Great stuff Lex!
Jamie’s Cryin’ is a classic VH song. This song was on VH’s debut album. EVH was goofin with this riff and the producer heard it and liked it and said the band should turn it into a song. The band came up with the music and David Lee Roth wrote the words in about an hour. Another great song from this album is “I’m The One” which has so much groove and guitar shredding. The guitar part was recorded in one take (though not the first take, just no overbdubs so it’s practically live).
This song is so unexpectedly wholesome. And she's not crying because she had a one night stand, she's crying because she knows if she gives in to the guy she likes that it'll only be a one night stand. But she doesn't do it, she cries instead. Good girl.
Lex, you pretty much nailed it VH during DLR era was from the perspective of a young male (teenage-early 20's) ; when Sammy came along the change was of a slightly older slightly wiser male but still up for a good time (late 20's).... right along with the ages of the band members.
Thank you for reviewing my all time favorite band. I love you guys! Jamie is a girl Diamond David Lee Roth wanted to sleep with in LA. She turned him down and she was sad that she didn't get to be with Dave. She wrote him a heartfelt letter and he's telling his audience what she told him in the letter "It said, Gimme a call sometime." But Dave wasn't into having girlfriends he just wanted to sleep with her, and she knew that. But Jamie had been in love before and she knows what love is for. She was looking for love, not a one night stand. @Brad & Lex
This is off of their 1978 debut album. To me, this is their best album. It was groundbreaking for the time because we had nevet heard anything like it before. As far as the song goes, Jamie is the one who did not want a one night stand. She knew that is all that guy, who ever he was, wanted. You have to understand that at that time, one night stands were the thing. Hook up with someone you meet at a club or disco with no strings attached. The disco 70s. As a guy, that is why you went to the clubs. I insrtead of the swingin' 60s, it was the secy 70s. Go figure.
Tone-Loc sampled this way back in the 80s, and had a pretty huge hit for himself. 😂 Wish you’d do some more obscure VH tunes… Little Guitars, Big Bad Bill, Atomic Punk, Hang’em High, Top Jimmy, Dirty Movies, Loss Of Control… There are so many GREAT Van Halen songs that weren’t chosen by corporations, to be radio singles…
VH debut, every tune could have been a released single, this album was a masssssive pivot in how guitarist approached guitar , amp, effects, harmonies, harmonics, single guitar rythem, basically Edward changed music.❤❤❤❤
Lexi is on point with the "Fresh" sound - what ia also known as "Timeless" music. Think Van Halen, Boston or the Beatles who all put out music that sounds fresh today. All artists strive to create a timeless classic.
Nope. Eddie’s guitar made that band, the rest is good, but without Eddie’s playing, it’s just a decent rock band. I saw them live and I enjoyed the songs and all that, but when Eddie did his ten minute solo spot, that sealed the deal for me. Why do you think Dave tried the same formula when he left? He’s not much without Eddie. And I love Sammy in VH, but his solo work isn’t nearly as good as his work with Eddie.
@@beatmet2355 …no doubt!Eddie was an instant hit.But Dave’s, Alex’s and Mike’s contributions should not be overlooked , even though they have been overshadowed.
@@beatmet2355 I can see both opinions. I think the right frontman has tremendous impact promoting a band's image. If Steve Perry, Axl Rose or Vince Neil hadn't been frontmen, would they have had that explosive success at that time? Maybe. If VH started with a different frontman, would they have been as successful? Maybe. There's no denying Eddie's talent was out of this world and would have become a recognized force even if he started as a studio musician, like Fagan and Becker. Since we can't un-ring that bell, we should all just accept that the cocktail of EVH, DLR, Mike and Al was a divine intervention, and one of the best rock bands in history was born! 😁
i love watching these current reactions to the songs that made up the soundtrack for my life. I waited online to get tickets to their first show in Philly in 78 with Black Sabbath. Van Halen ceased being Van Halen when Dave left.
Saw them open for Black Sabbath in Philly in 78 on their first tour. had no idea who they were but was amazing. a one night stand is when you spend the night with someone but that's it .
I was the captain of the wrestling team. Everyone sang this song to me. Even teachers. How do you beat up an entire school? Just laugh about it because it ain't going to stop. 🙄😂👍
Did you hear the sampling taken from this song for Ton Loc's "Wild Thing" ? This is one of my absolute favorite VH song. Running With the Devil (same album) is my #1 fav of all time.
A lot of people always rag on Van Halen over the years but I always ignored them. You can’t argue with their album sales, awards and all the rest of their success. I love Van Halen and Van Hagar! I even loved the songs like “me wise magic “. That they did with Dave in 1996.
I agree, I love Van Hagar. Totally different vibe, more mature, but some of my favorite Van Halen songs are with Hagar. Eddie’s playing is a little less in your face (with the exception of the 5150 album, fantastic guitar on that entire one) and more refined but just as unique and jaw dropping at times.
VH absolutely had no forefathers. That was actually said of them in a review of this album from back in 78. The reviewer stated that back then and it's true. That era of VH especially. Rock music then sounded "old" for the most part. Dour, heavy, and just of an older era. VH were younger, "boyish", had a bright and plingy guitar sound as opposed to a heavy chords dark guitar sound, and they were a pot/drinks and smiles kinda party band. Lex gets it. And they were all superb musically back then. Nothing before that sounded like them and tho they were emulated by many bands, nothing sounded like them even while being consciously copied.
This might just be fav Van Halen song for some reason LOL. When this album came out in 78' IT CHANGED THE GAME. IT CHANGED THE SOUND. Rock was getting stale as Punk and Disco were in full effect but when this album came out it revitalized HEAVY METAL and created the sound to come in the 80's with groups like Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Metallica, Judas Priest, etc
Reminds me of cruising the avenue with friends in high school. Checking out and hanging with the fine girls in your high school...and discovering girls that didn't go to your school.Bones for $2, peppermint schnapps and all the fast food that you could by with the change that you had. Good times for sure.

@@boballen818 I also believe Funky Cold Medina sampled KISS Christine Sixteen - I’m such a nerd haha 🤙🏼
@@jme808 I’m not familiar with the Kiss song you’re describing, so that’s also possible. However, I do know that the main riff throughout _Funky Cold Medina_ is from Foreigner’s _Hot Blooded._
@@noneprovided689 good catch, I can hear that! Definitely Hot Blooded
@@jme808 "Funky Cold Medina" sounds like the riff from Foreigner's "Hot Blooded"
Great song. Love you guys, btw!!! Never leave us!
DLR was just so iconic in the 80s. VH's first few albums kept parties alive1
Come on guys, nobody's reacting to "Take your whiskey home." One of their best.
It's a really good song when it takes you years to realize, "Hey! Eddie didn't even do a solo on this!?"
Definitely top 5 Van Halen!
they took music to a whole new level
Diamond Dave era Van Halen has always been my favorite.✌🏻
I think part of what makes it sound so fresh and timeless is that VH didn't copy anyone and no other band since has done it like VH did. Very unique and distinctive without being bracketed by similar time frame music. Great stuff Lex!
That feeling Lex is EDDIE VAN HAEN
Jamie’s Cryin’ is a classic VH song. This song was on VH’s debut album. EVH was goofin with this riff and the producer heard it and liked it and said the band should turn it into a song. The band came up with the music and David Lee Roth wrote the words in about an hour.
Another great song from this album is “I’m The One” which has so much groove and guitar shredding. The guitar part was recorded in one take (though not the first take, just no overbdubs so it’s practically live).
Simple reason it sounds fresh: great song writing, Superb musicianship, Insane, live off the floor production and knowing "when not to solo"!
This song is so unexpectedly wholesome. And she's not crying because she had a one night stand, she's crying because she knows if she gives in to the guy she likes that it'll only be a one night stand. But she doesn't do it, she cries instead. Good girl.
And, he split when she turned him down. Either way, she was going to lose the jerk.
@Brad & Lex
Great song from a great debut album
2 years after I graduate after growing up with the classic rock bands like Sabbath, Purple, Zeppelin, etc. we get this! Woooo!
Lex "Their songs are from that young boys perspective". Nailed it again!! Lex is the best reactor.
It's their energy...
They were the sound. Literally.
Go figure.
Yeah, Jamie loved a bad boy! Back in 1978, you either called or wrote a letter - that was it! No internet.
I’m addicted to Lex’s reactions and musical joy.
Love the Journey shirt ❤️
Tone-Loc sampled this way back in the 80s, and had a pretty huge hit for himself. 😂
Wish you’d do some more obscure VH tunes… Little Guitars, Big Bad Bill, Atomic Punk, Hang’em High, Top Jimmy, Dirty Movies, Loss Of Control… There are so many GREAT Van Halen songs that weren’t chosen by corporations, to be radio singles…

Jamies the girl......who doesn't want the one night stand....this was my favorite VH song off of album #1.
TIMELESS! love ya"ll
We all love EVH's guitar, but VH would be an 'also ran' band without DLR's voice and lyric ability...his words are gritty, real and unclean. 🤘
...and he put on a good show.Few artists put on as athletic a show as DLR (when he was young)
Came out in 78. 70's had some great music.
Van Halen 1 is one of the best hard rock records ever made. You should check "I'm The One" which is my favourite by VH.
Saw them open for Black Sabbath in Philly in 78 on their first tour. had no idea who they were but was amazing. a one night stand is when you spend the night with someone but that's it .
Top Jimmy and Ice Cream Man are 2 of my favorites. Eddie really shows his stuff on those two.
I was the captain of the wrestling team. Everyone sang this song to me. Even teachers. How do you beat up an entire school? Just laugh about it because it ain't going to stop. 🙄😂👍
Girl Gone Bad from 1984 album is 🔥! Alex's drums and Eddie's solo is amazing!!
Love all their songs!!!!
They were one of the first bands to sound sonically like 80s metal but in 1978.
Did you hear the sampling taken from this song for Ton Loc's "Wild Thing" ?
This is one of my absolute favorite VH song. Running With the Devil (same album) is my #1 fav of all time.
Incredible guitar as Eddie makes the guitar sound like it’s crying with Jamie.
Drum part at very beginning sampled by Tone Loc in "Wild Thang".
Perhaps the best album of all time.
@@michaeloesterle6652 I listened to 5150 so much. Fantastic album!
The 1st album has no equal!
The opening drums and the guitar refrain are sampled by Ton Loc in Wild Thing
VH was absolutely kick ass in this era.
My first Journey album was summer of 81. 41 years later, I love your shirt.
Reminds me of cruising the avenue with friends in high school. Checking out and hanging with the fine girls in your high school...and discovering girls that didn't go to your school.Bones for $2, peppermint schnapps and all the fast food that you could by with the change that you had. Good times for sure.
What a great song! This one has stood the test of time!
Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh , Lex you still have me crackin up, and great observations Brad!!
