I'm sure his wife, June Carter Cash, who was standing behind him on the stairway, would have enjoyed hearing you ask if she was his daughter. Actually, she was a couple of years older than Johnny. I have been a fan of Johnny Cash since he released his first record (I believe it was a single) Cry, Cry, Cry in 1955. (Okay, so I'm older than dirt!) In his heyday, Johnny Cash was huge, so big that at one time one out of every five records that were sold in this country was a Johnny Cash record.
The little white house where he was walking around and then looking in a window is his childhood home in Dyess, Arkansas. Johnny's older brother Jack was working in a sawmill when he was just a kid (maybe 14 or so years old) and he fell onto the saw and was cut almost in half. He lingered a few days and then ended up dying. His death hit Johnny hard because Jack had planned to be a preacher and Johnny couldn't understand why a boy who had decided to go into the ministry would be allowed to die in such a terrible way at such a young age. His father, unforgivably, told Johnny (J.R. as they called him) that HE should have been the child who was killed instead of Jack. I think Johnny always felt that Jack was better than he was, and he probably deep down agreed with his father that he was the one who should have died. His dad didn't much approve of his decision to be a singer because he thought he would do better if he would get a "real" job.
I mentioned that his family called him J.R. because the J and the R actually stood for nothing, that was just his name. When he joined the Army he filled out paperwork and put his name as J.R. and they asked him what the J stood for. He told them it stood for nothing. That was his name. They told him he had to have an actual name so on the spot he named himself John, possibly as homage to his brother Jack because John and Jack are the same name. I don't know for a fact that this is why he named himself John. I am merely speculating.
Contrary to what a lot of people think, Johnny was NEVER an inmate in prison. He loved performing for prisoners and he cut two live records in prisons, one in San Quentin and one in Folsom Prison. While Johnny never committed any felony and never went to prison, he did do some stupid stuff and ended up spending a few days in jail. He was locked up overnight in one jail and he said that when the sheriff came in the next morning he told him, "Cash, you're free to go and I don't want to ever see you again. My wife is a huge fan of yours and when I went home last night and told her I had Johnny Cash locked up in my jail, she cried all night. I don't ever want to listen to my wife cry over you again so don't let me ever see you again."
"Hurt" was written by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails and NIN recorded it. Cash's record is a cover of "Hurt" but Cash presents it in such a way that many people think he wrote it and they think the story is his. While the allusion to drug usage was certainly something that Cash knew about first hand because more than once in his life he was addicted to drugs and alcohol, many people think he was sitting in that big empty mansion never seeing anyone because all his family were either dead or had deserted him. That is not the case. June was the love of his life and she was alive when he made this video. He had a son John Carter Cash by June and John Carter was married and had children and he was always around Johnny. Johnny also had four daughters by his first wife and he was close to his daughters and grandchildren. June had children by her first husband, Carl Smith, (a country singer) and her daughter Carlene Smith is also a country singer. To my knowledge he was not estranged from any of them so they were in and out of his home on a regular basis. He was NOT a lonely old man just sitting there waiting to die and the fact that everyone believed that to be the case is just a mark of what a good song crafter Johnny was.
"Hurt" can flat rip your heart out but Johnny also recorded some songs that will make you laugh. You should react to "Boy Named Sue" or "The One on the Left is On the Right" or "One Piece at a time". He also had some beautiful songs that told stories, such as "I Hang My Head", "Don't Take Your Guns to Town", "Ballad of a Teenage Queen", "Miller's Cave" and "Cisco Clifton's Filling Station." He was big friends with Kris Kristofferson and he recorded many songs that Kris wrote. Two of my favorite songs by Johnny Cash were both written by Kris and they are called "Here Comes That Rainbow Again" and "Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down". I am still waiting for ANYONE to react to Rainbow.
In my admittedly biased opinion, I think there are two kinds of people. Those who are fans of Johnny Cash and those who have not yet listened to his music!

I'm approaching the age he was when he covered NIN's Trent's song that he wrote when he was trying to cover from drugs, depression, a very intimate song for him. Johnny's manager thought that Johnny could do so much with it and after awhile managed to get permission from Trent for Cash to do this one. Trent couldn't believe he had let someone else do this extremely personal song and started to regret it. Johnny Cash sent the video to Trent and thanks. Trent said, "It's Johnny's song now." June, the woman on the stairs died a couple of months later and Johnny just a few months later. June was his life. His daughter, RoseAnne Cash, watched the video and said, "It sounds like goodbye". He responded with, "It is".

It continues to amaze me on the different reactions to this song. The biggest differentiation in impact from both emotions and presentation of the meaning comes from ppls age difference. Young ppl, for good reason, have yet to look their mortality in the eye. This is the most powerful, impactful, and HUMAN thing I have ever watch and listened to from a song. And I'm not particularly a Cash fan, different eras. Enjoyed your sharing.

You said something very profound at about the 4:30 mark. A comment about knowing more about the man and his life would help you understand the song more.
This is a thing I connect with, and believe to be true in every aspect of music. The more you know and understand, the deeper the understanding of the meaning of the lyrics and music.
Not knowing is ok, and you can still enjoy the art, but as a fan of not just music, but the humanity behind it: knowing Anna learning gives it so much more impact.

I'm not really all that much of a country music fan, but I was a fan of Johnny Cash long before he ever sang this song. The connection to NIN was just a bonus. He was unique, and flawed, and human in the best, and worse senses of the word. I think that resonates with many of us who have walked a path in life that's not exactly smooth.

The movie "Walk the line" is really good. Joaquin Phoenix plays Johnny Cash. In 1997 Johnny Cash himself wrote an autobiography ("Cash: The autobiography"), which I highly recommend if you're really interested in his life and his thoughts. In the book he tells us a lot about his Christian belief. He had an amazing testimony and he knew that God was watching over him. His belief was very important for him. The film doesn't touch that aspect at all.
This was indeed his last song and his last Goodbye to us. You missed the last second of the video, imo the most important picture of the video. I think this was a video where every little detail was set on purpose. The last picture is the most touching.

His daughter later said she asked her father Johnny Cash why it sounds like he's saying goodbye with this song, and he replied, I am.as someone else said before, Nine inch Nails lead singer said I was born to write this song, he was born to sing it. This is in my opinion the greatest cover in history.

  • @toddabbott781

That was not a casket in the start of the video. It was a piano. He was dying from a neurological disorder and if you can not tell he really can not play much on the piano or guitar any more as his hands shake too much. Music was his life and the only thing keeping him going. His wife Jane (I think) encouraged him to continue releasing songs and singing. She died unexpectedly shortly after this video was released and he follower her a few months later. This was the last video he even shot. The photo of the lady with white hair is his mother and the woman with him towards the end is his wife, Jane. The imagery in this video is just amazing. When Johnny Cash's people told Trent Reisner of Nine Inch Nail's people of his intent to do a cover of the song, Trent did not think he could pull it off, but after the video was released Trent said he was impressed. If you want to hear a good version of the song done by Nine Inch Nails then look for the 2010 live version. It is a powerful song. I liked Pretty Hate Machine (his first album), but Hurt was the only song I liked on Downward Spiral. Hurt is just a great song with powerful lyrics.
I lost my dad recently, well over 5 years ago (my last grandparent died about 10 years ago). He had remarried when I was about 14 and his new wife kept him away from his old family so I rarely saw my father. I tried to get back together with him several times. In the end his doctor and his wife basically killed him . I was able to say goodbye and I think he was aware of what I was saying but could not speak do to the tubes in him. His wife kept him sedentary which was horrible for his health because he had Polio. Then he turned out in the hospital after a mild heart attack and instead of keeping him on meds to keep his blood pressure up they increased his flued. He had been on a low fluid diet for 10+ years because it would fill his lungs with fluid. It did and he went on a respirator. Even though the doctor said he likely could recover he would be in a chair on oxygen... but his wife insisted he did not want to be on a respirator and they decided to unplug him and let him die instead. Now I can never make up beyond what I said the night before they unplugged him. I think about him all the time still and how much I missed him in my life and how little my kids ever knew about him.

Yes, it is a cover, but interesting things come out of it. You mentioned Johnny's Ring of Fire which was one of his very first recordings. This was his very LAST recording made just seven months before he passed. Trent Reznor wasn't originally on board very much when he found out that Johnny was going to record it. When he heard it he said "This isn't mine anymore, this is Johnny's song now". Ans yes, the closing of the piano lid could represent a coffin lid, but I think of it more like he knew his music for the world was finally complete.

I never cared for the way that they portrayed his first wife Vivianne in that movie. It’s a shame because Ginnifer Goodwin was more than capable of portraying her more realistically. I guess if they wrote her more realistically it risked having Johnny come off as unlikeable. Since they weren’t really going to dive into the full extent of the outside forces that did damage to their relationship. Besides the drug addiction and affairs he had. Also since this was Johnny and Junes love story. Not Johnny and Vivianne.

This is a cover from the band nine inch nails a metal band. Trent Reznor from nine inch nails wrote this song in the 1990's. Johnny's version has a different feel then nine inch nails. Trent Reznor was against it at first but after hearing it and seeing Johnny's video he loved it and said he can have it. Johnny only changed one word in this song. That is his wife June standing on the stairs. This song is on his last album. This is his last music video. His wife passed a few months after this video then he passed not to long after her.

You dont need to know more about him to get this. This was right before he died and he knew the end was near. I think this is just about man coming to grips with his own mortality. It appears to me he is reflecting about all the ways in which he did his wife wrong. He loves her dearly, but he knows he could have done better. By the way, he did not write this or release it first. Bt it seems so perfect for him. His empire of dirt, to me is talking about all of his worldly possessions, which mean nothing as you near the end. The home movies are amazing to add to this song. The house was his childhood home, so again, a total reflection on his life. This is simply an amazing song, performance and video. You want another... go listen to Glen Campbell's final song "Im not gonna miss you." written by a man slowly slipping away to Alzheimers.

One of the most influential artists of the time, I get you didnt know who he or his wife was. not waiting for the end and the most pertinent point of the song is criminal. You kept pausing just before the end. Its a metaphor for a man that has been in the industry for 50+ years closing the piano lid on it. One day when you are 'old and gone' you might understand.

Good, bad, or indifferent. We are the sum total of our life's experiences. Change one, you alter the whole. At a young age I learned a lesson that changed my life.... I died. The doctor said I was clinically dead for 9 minutes. Dieing is a life altering event. From what I experienced that day I learned to cherish my sorrow in equal measure to my joy. For to fully know one you have to fully know the other. Like Johnny I too have lived a hard life. Jail, drugs, needles, booze done it all....been there done that. I've been half way around the world and back again. And have seen and done things most can only dream of. Now that I'm an old man I long for my death, and have no fear of it.when death comes knocking on my door I will welcome him as an old friend come to take me home. And I'll go regretting nothing.

Hurt wasn't Johnny's last recording. It was just his last video. He recorded & released the audio in 2002. The video was filmed Feb. 2003 & released March 2003. June died May 15, 2003. In his final interview, he said, even while in the hospital, June pushed him to keep working & “3 days after the funeral I was in the studio" & "it was great therapy for me." May-Aug 2003, he recorded the album, "American V, A Hundred Highways" (not released till 2006) & died Sept. 12, 2003.

Whether one is willing to admit it or not, everyone has anxiety about death. But, we are not cosmic accidents, Stardust that bangs around for some indefinite amount of time and then got shocked by energy that nobody knows where it came from and then gradually became hummingbirds and dinosaurs and giraffes people sex and galaxies etc. Johnny Cash had a strong belief in Jesus and though he is expressing sorrow over past sins in this song, though not written by him, you can tell by the music throughout his life that he understands the inescapable truth that God is in charge and that Jesus, God in the flesh, died to salvage the lives of those who would believe. God preexisted the universe that he created and he is the answer my friend.

There are documentaries on his life. But before you watch any documentaries check out the movie of his life with wykeem Phoenix (or however you spell it) it's not as independent but it gives you understanding when watching the documentaries.
I'm 60 my friend and death isn't as scary. When you reach a certain age you realize living forever is not something you would want.(trust me) no one wants to be old and alone.
All your friends are gone all who you loved most are all gone. It's a loneliness no one would ever want.
Time moves on and things change and one day you realize you don't fit in this world anymore.
Not to bring you down, you're a very young man life your life to the fullest every single day.( I still do and I'm a disabled veteran)
But life's not the same as when I was 30.
So again don't waste a second of your life. Live, love and be free.
Johnny Cash was so right about a empire of dirt.
It doesn't matter how rich, how much stuff you collect over the years. It's dirt you can't take it with you.
The most important and greatest things in life, are not material things. They are things like love and memories not gold or big house's.
I can tell you are very intelligent, by what you said about having chance to ask the old folks any and all the questions you can think of.
Again I'm old 60 not that old by today's standard.
But the knowledge and wisdom I could tell you about would blow your mind. So ask the old folks about anything you are wondering about. You will be wiser and just maybe avoid a snare in your way as you walk through life.
God bless you, my young friend. I wish you nothing but success in life.
And my advice would be stay grounded and think before you speak. People who are all quick with emotions usually end up depressed or worse.
Great video! More great Johnny Cash, the man in black, when the man comes around,, and for laughs a boy name sue.
Man there are so many great songs. I'm so glad to see the young people getting into the OG of true story telling.

You definitely need to watch documentaries about Johnny Cash, but keep in mind that there were many aspects to his life and you will probably have to watch a few different documentaries to understand him. He grew up dirt poor, picking cotton as a sharecroppers son. He sang gospel songs in the fields with his mother (the woman in the picture). He worked in a saw mill with his brother who was killed by a saw and his father wished it had been Johnny. He found fame but in finding it, he found drugs, women, booze and lost his first wife and family as a result of it. He went into a cave to commit suicide but heard God speak to him and came out of it as a social activist (The Man in Black) and spent the rest of his life fighting injustice of many kinds). He married his best friend only to know he was losing her as he recorded this song. He was so attached to her that he died himself within months of her dying. I believe the last song he recorded was God's Gonna Cut You Down. He didn't do the video but a lot of artists of different genres made the video as a tribute to him and you should watch it because you will see the broad impact he had in the music industry. Something he himself probably never appreciated.

@@Send1tReacts I think what Ivenature meant about stopping too soon, is that you missed the final seconds, where Johnny closes the piano. A powerful scene. If you didn't see that part, it's worth watching, just for yourself. His wife, June, usually wore her hair long. From a distance, it makes her appear younger. In a close-up shot, side-by-side, they look similar in age (she was almost 3 years older than he).
