  • A quick look at the Ford 515 Sickle Bar Mower that I picked up from Craigslist for $300. I had to do a few things a little different to get it ready to cut, as well as install a new tractor half of the driveshaft, but we got it working. Stay tuned as I use this to try to cut hay and in the future as I make the necessary repairs to return it to top working condition.

I discovered why the previous owner of your 515 shimmed some of the rock guards. Prepping the 515 I just bought, I noticed that several blades had a gap away from from the guards when I would have liked them flat against so it can cut like a scissors. Well today I made my first pass around the field, blades were sharp and cutting, then belt started to vibrate and within seconds snapped. When I returned to the barn I noticed there was a lot of grass wedged between the blades and guards, was hard to pull out. I have never seen that happen on other sickle bars before. Now I realize that the wedged grass made it hard for the belt to move the blade bar snapping the belt. The solution is to shim those guards where there's a gap so that they will tilt and be flush against the blade. Now I have to order a new belt which will take a week to get here. Meanwhile shim those guards.

Great do it yourself video, and I hope the best for you. Grease, grease, grease ... oil, oil, oil that cutting bar...
Think that 515 is old. Try my ford 501 sickle bar, and yes a case 230 square baler
    Both early 60's
Happy cutting, and enjoy the learning process...
    My best Scott

We had a ford 501 on the farm, but I never remember seeing it in operation as all we used were new Holland 451's when I was old enough to work in the field.

We've still got two Ford 501 mowers here at home, for use with Ford 800 and 601 tractors, on misc mowing jobs. (started running when 6yr old)
I need to spruce them up, and go mowing scruff/weeds off pastures next week, so cows have better better grass growth for rest of summer.
We've also got two JD sickle mowers... one "belly mount" for JD-3020 tractor, and one rear-mount for anything else... plus a JD-1209 pull type mower conditioner I was running a few weeks ago in three hay fields.
Unfortunately the disk-mower is broke down, and costs extra to fix.
A brush-hog can be used for 'rough work' but not good for hay.

"Ahhh Crap...." Yep. Hammering on the cap isn't the best idea.... Use a C clamp.

On that style of Ford tractor, there is a lever near Right side of seat that lifts the "3-point" equipment arms. To turn on/off the PTO shaft turning the mower, you first push in the clutch, and engage/move a lever near your Left heel (when sitting on tractor) then as you let the clutch back UP, it applies power to the PTO + mower.
